A suicide bomber wounded 24 people in an attack late Friday in Russia's North Caucasus province of Dagestan.

Those injured in the blast, on the outskirts of the region's capital, Makhachkala, were mostly police officers.

Nizami Radzhabov, Sr. Ass't to Director of Dept. of Investigation, Dagestan Office]:
"Because of the blast, 14 officers of the Ministry for Internal Affairs were hospitalized with different injuries and in different conditions."

A surgeon at a regional hospital said seven people remained in a critical condition with gunshot and explosion wounds.

The North Caucasus is plagued by near-daily attacks -- largely targeting government forces -- a decade after separatists were driven from power in Dagestan's neighbour, Chechnya.

Earlier on Friday unidentified militants gunned down a school principal in her house, while separate shootouts killed 12 people across the North Caucasus.
