Oscar winners Al Pacino and Tom Hanks both accepted awards at a star-studded 62nd Emmy Awards.

The awards had been predicted to be a Glee-fest with the hit musical drama receiving 19 nominations.

After a lavish performance to open the show though, the gongs did not come for the show as they walked away with just four of the famous trophies.

Mad Men won Outstanding Drama for the third successive year whilst Bryan Cranston was also a return winner picking up Best Actor for his role in Breaking Bad.

Ricky Gervais followed up his Golden Globe jibes against Mel Gibson as he took to the stage to give an award saying:

"Mel Gibson ... Come on, no, come on. I'm not going to have a go at him. He's been through a lot. Not as much as the Jews, to be fair. Who wants a beer?"

Seven of the eight winners in acting categories were first-time Emmy winners.
