Eubie Blake & His Orchestra, v. Dick Robertson – My Blue Days Blew Over, Victor 1931
NOTE: James Hubert (“Eubie”) BLAKE (1887 Baltimore, MD – 1983 Brooklyn, NJ) American pianist, composer, lyricist and bandleader of ragtime & jazz music. In age of 7 he received music lessons from an organist from the Methodist church. Eubie’s mother imagined her son’s career as church music performer, however at age 15 he started to play piano at a Baltimore bordell. After WW I Blake joined forces with Noble Sissle to form a "Dixie Duo." In 1921 they wrote the musical Shuffle Along which guaranteed Blake his place in music history. After "Shuffle Along " they collaborated on Chocolate Dandies. The musicals were significant not only for reviving the black musical, but also for helping launch young artists:Josephine Baker and Paul Robeson. In 1970s Blake was one of principle figures of the early jazz revival, giving performances into his nineties. In 1979 the musical Eubie was created from his work.
