Environmental Protection in Sumatra | Global 3000

The International Climate Initiative has launched a project on Sumatra, designed to protect some 24,000 hectares of forest. It's trying to create a positive precedent to protect the island's remarkable biodiversity.

Sumatra's primeval forest grows on a layer of peat several meters thick, which stores large amounts of carbon dioxide. If the forest were to disappear the CO² would be released, with disastrous consequences for the environment.
