Floods Continue to Batter Pakistan

Heavy flooding continues to batter Pakistan on Thursday. But some locals refused to abandon their homes and move to safer ground.

Families in Punjab were moving their belongings and repairing damaged homes with limited supplies.

[Naseem Bibi, Villager]: (female Saraiki)
"All my belongings have gone with the flood water. The only thing I could save was the pot filled with wheat."

In a village in Layyah district, some were working to block floodwater from entering their houses, while others tried to repair damage already made by the rising waters.

Authorities say some 88 villages were evacuated in the district, but some residents refused to leave.

[Ghulam Nabi, Villager]: (male, Saraiki)
"Several houses have collapsed, but no one here is ready to leave. We are not ready to leave our homes. We are here to save our houses (from flood)."

Most of those who survived the floods are now living outdoors and exposed to the elements.

[Hafiz Tanveer, Villager]: (male, Urdu)
"The people who have houses on elevated grounds are not moving from here, their belongings are safe, but many other houses have completely vanished."

Pakistan's biggest floods in 80 years brought on by monsoon rains have devastated more than 3 million people and killed more than 1,500.
