Raoul Moat's confession letter declaring war on the police has given a chilling insight into his thoughts and motives.
In the 49-page hand-written document, handed to The Sun newspaper, the 37-year-old admitted being a "killer and a maniac" and pledged to keep killing police until he was dead.
He also described in detail the moment he allegedly shot and injured his ex-girlfriend Samantha Stobbart and allegedly murdered her new boyfriend Chris Brown on Saturday. The next day he allegedly shot and injured Pc David Rathband.
Moat wrote: "The public need not fear me but the police should as I won't stop till I'm dead."
Blaming the police for taking away his children, his freedom and Miss Stobbart, Moat apologised for hurting his former girlfriend. "I still love her despite everything but my head is a mess right now and I know I'm too far gone to make much sense of it," he wrote. "I guess I've finally lost it. I'm not on the run, I will keep killing police until I am dead. They've hunted me for years, now it's my turn."
Moat revealed he listened to Miss Stobbart and Mr Brown "mocking" him on Saturday morning. He wrote: "If I was ever going to back down, listening to them stopped that."
Moat claimed he fired another round into Mr Brown's head and a less powerful one into Miss Stobbart, which he wrote would mean she could get "massive compensation" and scarring to remind her "not to ever do this to anyone again".
Moat described how his rages took over, writing: "It's like The Hulk, it takes over and it's more than anger and it happens only when I'm hurt, and this time I was really hurt."
Meanwhile police are probing an armed robbery at a fish and chip shop carried out by a man with a similar description to Moat.
Earlier Northumbria police confirmed they were warned that Moat might be planning to harm his ex-partner Samantha Stobbart the day before he allegedly shot her and her new boyfriend.
Ms Stobbart has issued a direct appeal to Moat, through the police, saying: "Please give yourself up. If you still love me and our baby you would not be doing this."
