Public pianos prove hit among musical New Yorkers

Beyond the horns and the traffic of the streets of New York, the air was filled with another sound this week - the sound of music.

Some 60 pianos were delivered to various locations across the city for the public to play.

The pianos are a part of an art project called Play Me, I'm Yours, which is the brainchild of Luke Jerram.

"Really they are a blank canvas for everyone else's creativity. This is not about me and my little idea, this is about providing an opportunity for everyone else to express themselves and connect with one another," Jerram said.

Jerram teamed up with New York-based non-profit group Sing for Hope, which collected the pianos and arranged for their distribution.

Play Me, I'm Yours launched in the UK in 2009, and also hit cities including Sao Paolo and Sydney. Now the project is being rolled out in New York and London simultaneously.
