Former Liberal Democrat minister Norman Baker says that Buckingham Palace should be "open to the public" and that ticket sales to visit it should go back into the public purse. The King has said he won't make Buckingham Palace his main royal residence even after a £370 million refurbishment of the building. Report by Keechl. 00:01Well, no one should force Charles to know where he doesn't want to live.
00:04So if he doesn't want to live in Buckingham Palace, that's fine by me.
00:06But the issue is that we as taxpayers have paid £359 million for this to be refurbished.
00:13All bells and whistles, all their old bedrooms have been sorted out at great expense and luxuriously.
00:19The estimate went up from £50 million, by the way, but ended up at £369 or £359.
00:25That means that the palace should now be open to the public.
00:28The public should be able to go in the 12 months a year.
00:31And the ticket sales should generate income which goes back to the Treasury to pay for this huge refurbishment that's
00:38just taken place.
00:39Because at the moment, we pay for the refurbishment and the king regards the money he gets from ticket sales
00:45as private.
