A heat wave sweeps across India’s state of Orissa. Here's a look at how people are trying to beat the heat.

The heat is on in India’s eastern state of Orissa. On Tuesday, the weather department issued a heat wave advisory in the area for the next 24 hours. Temperatures are expected to top 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

"Cuttack recorded 40.1 degree Celsius ... we have hot day conditions over coastal Orissa because of climatic conditions. We have issued heat wave warnings for the next 24 hours for Orissa state."

Officials blame northeast winds and clear sky for the intense conditions.

People were seen drinking cold drinks and lassi (LAH see), a popular summer drink made of yogurt, to beat the heat.

The most affected were college and school students who hope that their classes can be held earlier than normal to beat the heat.

"Students face lots of problems, there is no place to sit and take a rest. We drink lassi to rejuvenate ourselves."

The months of May-June are usually India’s hottest.
