Indonesia Arrests 10 Asylum Seekers in North Sumatra

Police in Tanjung Balai Asahan port of North Sumatra Province have detained seven Afghans and three Iraqi asylum seekers.

The arrests were made when they arrived in port.

"They were arrested in Tanjung Balai Asahan port because they entered the port without legal documents."

Immigration officials have no details about the asylum seekers.

Asylum seekers mostly come from war-ravaged countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. They often travel through Indonesia's waters before going to a third country like Australia.
