For Bali-based artist Rostarr, painting is more than a practice—it’s a form of freedom. In this intimate artist profile, he traces the path from magazine and record-industry art direction to a multidisciplinary life shaped by abstract calligraphy, typography, iconography, and the desire to follow his own vision.

Given creative freedom for a large Potato Head project, Rostarr drew on the movement and imagery of Bali, including dancers, Hindu deities, and mandalas, to make work connected to its place. Hear how rebellion, trust, and the act of creating help him discover what drives him. A thoughtful look at contemporary art, creative process, and artistic inspiration in Bali.

00:04My name is Ramon Kiminyang aka Rostar. I'm an abstract calligrapher, painter, and multimedia
00:12artist. From an early age I always loved to draw but never really thought that I would become an
00:22artist. That wasn't my goal. I realized I loved making iconography like logo designs, like
00:28typography and you know that was really like my specialty. Like I loved that so much. Afterwards
00:34I worked in the industry a little bit. I worked for magazines and then I worked in the record
00:39industry like doing art direction design. I liked it but I what I ultimately realized is that I didn't
00:46want to work for other people or I didn't want people to cloud up my vision. If I had a
00:51vision
00:52of like what it should look like or what is going to solve a problem or whatever I felt like
00:56I knew
00:57really deeply that this is you know really strongly I just like this is what it should be. I guess
01:03all
01:03roads sort of just led me to be an artist because I can't work for other people you know that
01:09it's
01:10like rebellion sort of led me to my path here you know to be an artist.
01:18Well for me personally I feel like creativity is like freedom like for me painting is freedom like in
01:27in a way that it's I just get lost in it you know it's something that it takes it's bigger
01:32than me.
01:33If you really want to get out the full potential of your creativity it's you know it's not sometimes
01:40it's not that easy you know. I've learned so much about myself and and I learn something every day
01:49like when I make art or you know when I make a painting I learn something and so it's not
01:55just
01:55about painting or technique it's about who I am and you know what makes me tick.
02:05I've been lucky to work with Potato Head like uh two times before at least they knew what they
02:10were dealing with you know and so they uh the owner and the creative director really loved my work and
02:16ultimately for this project it's so large they're like who else is gonna do it and so they're like
02:22we just wanted someone to do something instead of showing like a black wall I'm like okay well
02:27I'll do it yeah no problem and they didn't try to give me any direction or basically if you're
02:34gonna hire me like my whole thing is either you trust me or you don't if you don't then then
02:39hire
02:40someone else but I'm not that's not how I work you have to you know it's a bit risky but
02:45if you
02:47know my work then you know that I'm only gonna deliver.
02:52I take into account what where I'm doing the piece and you know obviously you know they're
02:59asking me to if there was a way I can infuse you know like concepts of Balinese culture
03:06like Balinese dancers, Hindu gods ever since I moved to Bali I was you know really influenced by
03:14like the culture here too and I was actually making a lot of mandalas incorporating characters
03:22it's all about movement either it's characters or abstraction and so yeah you know I want to be
03:28thoughtful too I don't it's not like okay let me just paint a bunch of devils or anything
03:34I want it to be something that pertains to the area to the place I'm doing it you know
03:48I can't believe today is the last day so it's really I don't want to say bittersweet but it's
03:54really like I'm just really happy to get back to my life and and back to my family you know
04:14you
