00:00Paraguayan President Santiago Pena resigned Thursday just before the country's parliament
00:05known as the National Congress voted unanimously to impeach him over the collapse of digital
00:11lender UNO.
00:13Pena's resignation came amid pressure and the withdrawal of support by the country's
00:18Congress president and ruling Conservative Party leader over his links with the troubled
00:24bank and allegations of improper financial gain.
00:53The central bank froze UNO's bank accounts, leaving nearly three hundred
00:58million customers unable to access their money and sparking protests in the streets.
01:05Santiago Pena took office as president of Paraguay on August 15, 2023 with a term running
01:13through 2028.
01:14While millions of customers wait to recover their deposits, Vice President Pedro Aliana
01:20will assume the presidency.
01:26The Kremlin has placed Japan Tobacco International's operations under state control.
01:32The company employs around 4,000 people in Russia and holds roughly 40% of the Russian cigarette
01:37market.
01:38This makes it the country's largest cigarette manufacturer.
01:41Under the new decree, four of its factories have now been transferred to a state-linked holding
01:47company.
01:48Russia has made similar moves involving several European companies, including Swiss food group
01:54Nestle, French retailers Auchan and Leroy Merlin, and German retailer Metro.
01:59Moscow says these takeovers are a response to the sanctions imposed after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
02:06Japan has also joined some of those Western sanctions.
02:10The decision to take control of the company comes after Russia arrested a Japanese journalist
02:16last month on espionage charges.
02:18The foreign ministry in Moscow has systematically accused Tokyo of using journalists for such purposes.
02:25Japan has in the meantime protested Russia's seizure of the assets and is working with the
02:30company on taking further action.
02:36Europe is hoping it can spur a new generation of European chip design companies with a 525
02:43million euros bet on startups.
02:45The European Commission announced the European chip design platform, which aims to offer early-stage
02:51firms design tools, access to intellectual property and manufacturing, and grants of up to 16
02:58million euros.
02:59Chip design is a core stage of the semiconductor value chain and a place where much of the industry's
03:05innovation emerges.
03:07Yet European firms currently generate less than 1% of global revenues in this segment, the Commission
03:13said EU officials say this undermines the bloc's wider chip strategy, new manufacturing capacity in
03:19Europe will only be sustainable if there is enough demand for it, and much of that demand has to come
03:25from European designers.
03:27Officials say the stakes go beyond startups, new European factories will only pay off if European
03:33designers supply the demand.
03:35The CHIPS Act was designed to lift the EU to a 20% share of global semiconductor production by 2030,
03:42up from a base of around 9% in 2020.
03:46But in a 2025 report, the European Court of Auditors concluded that the target is very unlikely to be met.
03:54Meanwhile, chip capacity is concentrated to just a handful of companies led by Taiwan and South Korea.
04:06China's ambassador to the EU, Cairoon, threatened on Thursday to retaliate if the EU adopted unilateral
04:13measures against Chinese interests.
04:15The statement came as the European Commission is working on a new trade defence tool, dubbed
04:20a kill switch, that could cut off Chinese access to the EU market in the event of serious market
04:26disruption caused by its aggressive trade policies.
04:29If the EU side insists on adopting restrictive and discriminatory measures against China,
04:35China will have to take countermeasures to firmly safeguard its interests, said the Chinese diplomat.
04:42As the EU faces a record-high trade deficit with China of 1 billion euros a day, Brussels is seeking
04:48to protect its market from low-cost Chinese imports, which have surged by 25% over the past year,
04:55according to Chinese customs. EU Trade Commissioner Maros Shevchovic told MEPs that the tool should be
05:01presented by the end of the year and would allow the EU to react much faster. Presented as a country
05:07agnostic, the tool would nevertheless directly target Chinese interests, which rely heavily on the EU's
05:13450 million consumers to sell their excess of production.
05:21Cristiano Ronaldo announced on Thursday that he is retiring from international football,
05:25ending a career with the Portuguese team that spanned six World Cups and included the European title
05:31and the men's all-time international scoring record.
05:34His announcement marked the end of a louder career that began more than two decades ago,
05:39before Euro 2004 and ended with him controversially walking out on the national team last month
05:44after falling out with coach Jorge Jesus.
05:48Jesus had kept his star player on the bench for the following match and said he didn't plan to start
05:53him in the next one, leading to Ronaldo's departure from the team's training camp.
05:57The Portuguese Football Federation released a statement expressing deep gratitude and immense
06:02admiration for Ronaldo's service to the country. Ronaldo will keep playing at a club level and is
06:07expected to finish his club career at the end of this season with Al Nasser in Saudi Arabia.
06:12He is in pursuit of his 1000th career goal and is currently on 985.
06:23Typhoon has been sailing Greek water since July 2019. It lies at the heart of the Typhoon Project,
06:30an initiative by the Athanasios K Lascaridis Public Benefit Foundation.
06:36The project's aim is to clean up the entire Greek coastline, with particular focus on hard-to-reach shores.
06:43In February 2023, the first clean-up cycle, covering the coastlines of the islands and most of mainland Greece, was
06:52completed.
06:54Every day, 365 days a day, they are filled with 5 feet from the Typhoon Project, which is a
07:00Norwegian project of 72 meters, and our team, which is from 20 inspectors,
07:07is to clean up the non-reviewed units, they don't have the own network,
07:11they don't have any organized tourist business, and there is no way to clean up the other way.
07:18We followed the 20-member crew to the islet of Patroclus in the Saronic Gulf.
07:24Everything they collected was then transported aboard the ship,
07:28but the team's work doesn't end once the shores have been cleaned.
07:32In addition to transporting recyclable waste to the appropriate facilities,
07:36they also carry out an equally important task, documenting their findings.
07:41We implement a detailed description of all the ranges. We know exactly how much it is,
07:47how many miles, how many miles from each coastline.
07:50This time, we have the biggest base of data related to the sea-reviewed
07:54in the Mediterranean, and we develop it every day. We have over 10,000 complete calculations.
08:02After seven years of operations in Greek waters,
08:04the Typhoon Project's track record is as impressive as it is concerning.
08:10With the Typhoon, we have selected more than 1,140 tons,
08:15which means to make the image of someone
08:19on an angle of 22 olympic distances or around 1,160 containers of large size.
08:30The Typhoon Project also collaborates with two Greek universities
08:33to study marine waste and identify different types of plastic.
08:38It also organizes educational activities with schools on the islands it visits.
08:42The Typhoon Project is unique in the Middle East.
08:46Today, the theory group of theory
08:47combines the ranges from 500 kg to 1,000.
08:52And only this range
08:53shows the range of the sea-reviewed and the importance of this effort.
08:59From the Saroni-Kolpo for the Euronews, Apostolos Taikos.
09:06You're always eating.
