00:00 Astronomers almost deleted this line of light as a glitch.
00:03 Streaks like this are usually cosmic rays hitting the camera, but this one wouldn't go away.
00:07 It was real.
00:07 A line 200,000 light years long, twice the width of the Milky Way,
00:12 shooting dead straight out of a distant galaxy.
00:14 And it's made of stars.
00:16 Young ones, getting younger toward the tip, the way a contrail is freshest right behind the plane.
00:21 So what's at the tip? Nothing you can see.
00:23 Then they pointed the James Webb Telescope right at it and found a shockwave, like a sonic boom.
00:27 Something invisible is slamming through the thin gas out there at nearly a thousand kilometers a second.
00:33 Earth to the moon in seven minutes.
00:35 It's a black hole thrown out of its own galaxy.
00:38 How do you throw something that weighs 10 million suns?
00:41 Two galaxies collide and their black holes sink to the middle and pair up.
00:44 Then a third galaxy brings a third black hole.
00:47 Three's a crowd, gravity slingshots one of them out for good.
00:50 Back at the tip, that shockwave squeezes the gas so hard that behind it, the gas clumps together and ignites.
00:56 Black holes are supposed to swallow stars.
00:58 This one is making them.
