00:00 This is diabolical.
00:01 A reverse-engineered block blast to figure out how a free puzzle game makes over 100 million dollars in ads.
00:05 That's more than Candy Crush.
00:06 And it turns out how well you do in the game has less to do with your skill and more
00:10 to do with how much you're worth to them in ads.
00:11 It takes your phone model, your country, how much your past ads have made them, even whether you turned off
00:15 the vibration on your phone.
00:16 It all goes into an XGBoost model that runs locally on your phone that predicts how much you can be
00:20 worth to them in ads.
00:21 Then depending on your value, it'll make the game easier or harder.
00:23 One rule called Boost then secretly makes it easier so you think you're on the best run of your life
00:27 right up until you hit your average game link.
00:29 And if it detects a really expensive ad is ready, that's when it turns on you.
00:32 A rule called High Value Ad Harvest confirms that you have a history of watching ads, then helps you beat
00:35 your high score before it triggers something called the algorithm, which rigs your next turn so there's no way to
00:40 survive.
00:40 And the moment you lose, the first thing you see is an offer to revive if you watch that same
00:43 ad.
00:43 And if you do revive, they'll even secretly add 10% to your high score so you keep coming back
00:47 for more.
00:47 In fact, they even run experiments on the exact minute to make you lose, and they measure which one gets
00:51 you to watch the revive ad.
00:52 So all things considered, Block Blast isn't really a puzzle game.
00:55 It's more of an ad harvest with a rigged game loop built to squeeze every penny out of you.
00:58 Uh-uh.
