A ground squirrel stands guard on its burrow mound in the golden savanna, scanning the skies — and not a moment too soon. A bateleur eagle folds its wings and stoops at terrifying speed, but the squirrel is already gone: it sprints flat-out across the grass and flies up the acacia trunk before the eagle even touches down, and the eagle lands on an empty mound. From its branch, the squirrel watches it climb away into the open sky.
