Malaysia aims to capture more economic value from goods passing through its ports instead of merely handling higher cargo volumes, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said the country must build on its strategic position along the Strait of Malacca to become a world-class logistics hub.

00:00Three, two, one...
00:08When a company like Daiso uses Pulau Indah here
00:13as its largest global distribution center worldwide
00:19it must certainly convey a profound message
00:24about the company, Daiso, and about this country, Malaysia.
00:31So, arigato gozaimasu again
00:33because it is a resounding vote of confidence
00:38in Malaysia's economic stability, infrastructure maturity
00:43and your confidence in its long-term potential.
00:49A global distribution center like this
00:53is built around our ports, our roads
00:58and, more importantly, our workforce.
01:03And once it becomes part of a global supply chain
01:08it stays for the long haul.
01:11It brings advanced logistics technology
01:15and know-how into this country
01:18and it brings cargo into our ports
01:21and it's handled here
01:23rather than simply passing through.
01:28And that's exactly the kind of investment
01:32that we are deliberately targeting.
01:35Under the Madani economic framework
01:38we seek to raise the ceiling of our economy
01:42and raising the floor for all the citizens.
01:47So, we do not measure ourselves
01:50only by the headline dollar figure
01:53of the investment we attract.
01:56We also ask whether it creates better paying jobs
02:03building more capabilities
02:06links with malicious suppliers
02:09and supports sustainable development.
02:13Through the new Industrial Master Plan
02:162030 our investment incentives
02:19we are increasingly rewarding those
02:22more holistic outcomes.
02:26Investors, fortunately like that, you know
02:32bringing higher value activities,
02:35skilled jobs and local partnership
02:38should find Malaysia
02:40the most rewarding place to grow.
02:44So, by that measure
02:45this facility is off
02:50for a resounding start.
02:54Now, six centuries have passed
02:58and fortunately
03:00we have seen it in the numbers.
03:03Port Klang today
03:04as alluded to by Anthony Lok
03:07handled a record of 15.1 million TEUs
03:13last year
03:14and ranks among the world's
03:1710 busiest container ports.
03:22So, you have made a good decision
03:25because it has been proven
03:27to be efficient.
03:29Of course, I always ask my colleagues,
03:32my ministers,
03:33are you sure we are super efficient?
03:36Is there room for improvement?
03:38Can you make sure that the authority here
03:41in Port Klang can speed up their process?
03:45Challenge them to be more efficient?
03:48That's naturally my job.
03:50But I will not, of course, deny the fact
03:53that I am proud of the capacity here
03:57and the performance of the entire team
04:00at the port to facilitate the process.
04:05So, we have to capture more
04:08of the value that flows through our ports
04:11instead of the volume
04:13but also value.
04:16So, the Global Distribution Center
04:18shows an example of what it would look like
04:22in practice.
04:23goods will be sorted, stored, and repacked
04:28for different global markets
04:30right here in Pulao Inda.
04:32This is where the value and the skilled jobs
04:36will be located in.
04:38And that is why we are investing across
04:41every mode of transport.
04:43And see, West Ports 2 will nearly double
04:48West Ports capacity.
04:50And we are planning this future megaports
04:54at Pulao Carry.
04:55And we have also insisted that we
04:59fastened the process.
05:02Now, on land, the ECRL and our rail freight network
05:06will carry more cargo with our ports
05:08and off our highways.
05:11In the air, we are expanding airport
05:14and air cargo capacity.
05:16So, through a refreshed national transport policy,
05:21these will work as one system.
