00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the biggest takeaways and hidden meanings in Episode 7
00:06of Vision Quest.
00:07We'll be getting into spoilers for the show, as well as other MCU projects, so consider this your warning.
00:13You. You were the first of us.
00:19Number 10. One Giant Frankenstein Riff
00:22Episode 7, titled Immolation, has an incredibly important opening,
00:26transporting us into the 1930s and fleshing out useful pieces of backstory along the way.
00:31We meet Phineas Horton and quickly discover his dilemma.
00:35Are you really going to sell your family's entire legacy to, what, build some cold imitation of the past?
00:43Machine. To replace a son no machine ever could.
00:48Filled with grief over the death of his son, Phineas is consumed with his science project, Jim.
00:54He wants to create an artificial being at the cost of ignoring his remaining family,
00:59which makes him a lot like Victor Frankenstein.
01:01He's defying the rules of the natural world to make life and ignoring the consequences.
01:06The synthetic man is his version of Frankenstein's monster,
01:10and though he plays God, we know his invention won't bring him peace.
01:14You are not God. James is gone, Phineas.
01:19Three years dead.
01:22And yet you remain haunted.
01:24It's not that different from how Victor didn't find peace through his creation either.
01:29I am obscene to you, but to myself I simply am...
01:32Be gone!
01:36Never again will I make something like you wicked and deformed.
01:42Number 9. The Shape of the Source Code
01:45Tracking down source code becomes an important deal in this episode,
01:49but we actually get a glimpse of this MacGuffin early on.
01:51In fact, we're going to talk about our pal Phineas a little more
01:54because he is the gift that keeps on giving.
01:57And you need never know the consequence of love.
02:01It's sorrow.
02:03The pain.
02:04And crying out for someone who can no longer hear you.
02:07You see, at one point he holds up the physical form of Jim's source code,
02:11and it looks strikingly familiar to tech we've seen before.
02:15Recognize that triangle shape?
02:17You might think it looks like a cybernetic Dorito,
02:19and, well, yeah, it kind of does.
02:21But it also looks just like Tony Stark's Mark VI arc reactor.
02:32This whole show has linked Vision and the other AIs to Stark,
02:35but this is yet another awesome reminder that everything's connected.
02:39You want to run some tests?
02:41Run them.
02:42And assemble the suit while you're at it.
02:44Put it together now.
02:45We are unfair as to the effects.
02:46I don't want to hear it, Jarvis.
02:49Number 8. Speaker Mode
02:50The mind space has tons of awesome rooms and an old-timey feel to it,
02:55and we get reminded of how quirky it is in this episode.
03:02When Vision and the team have a stealthy chat with Friday,
03:06Edith puts her on speakerphone.
03:07Except their version isn't some simple button on a smartphone.
03:15It's actually a process of propping the rotary on top of a physical speaker,
03:20and it's such an out-of-left-field move in an otherwise serious scene.
03:24The hilarious tech combo might seem like a simple gag,
03:27but it also reveals a lot.
03:29Vision and the other AIs use old tech in new ways,
03:33constantly adapting and making the most out of their equipment.
03:36At the end of the day, these synths are innovators.
03:39Wherever it is, she's got billions of those nanobots locked away.
03:44And now, thanks to Ultron, she has all the keys.
03:47Number 7. Retinal Scans
03:49When Jocasta tries opening a mystery box,
03:52she needs to present several biokeys in order to unlock it.
03:55She shows a couple of different items to bypass the verification,
03:59including a human eyeball.
04:01Yikes!
04:02Bio key 2. Accept.
04:05The visual of her holding the eye up to the retinal scan is an uncomfortable one,
04:10but she's not the first MCU villain to have had eyes on the prize.
04:14Don't forget that Loki gouged the dude's eye out in the Avengers
04:16to bypass a similar retinal scan procedure.
04:19Ouch. Sucks to be that guy.
04:22Oh!
04:29Eyes are a real hot commodity in the MCU, apparently.
04:31Who knew?
04:32We didn't think Jocasta and Loki would have so much in common,
04:35but apparently ripping out eyes is a shared hobby of theirs.
04:49Number 6. Reciting Poetry
04:51Jocasta's got away with words,
04:53and during the whole time that she's stuck with her mystery box conundrum,
04:56she says a few inspired lines.
04:58Once upon a midnight dreary,
05:01while I pondered weak and weary
05:04over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore.
05:07She didn't just come up with all those charming words on the spot, though.
05:10She's actually reciting several lines from The Raven,
05:13a poem by Edgar Allan Poe.
05:15Poe was a major player in Gothic literature,
05:18writing dark and disturbing tales about love, loss, and death.
05:22Of course, he had a thing for birds, too, if you didn't know that yet.
05:25While I nodded, early napping.
05:27Voice analyzing.
05:28Suddenly they came a-tapping.
05:30As of someone gently rapping.
05:33Rapping at my chamber door.
05:36Tis and visitor, I martyred.
05:39Tapping at my chamber door.
05:40The Raven specifically plays into ideas of madness and memory,
05:45which mirrors Jocasta's story.
05:46In this episode, she's trying to remember who she is,
05:50and Poe's poetry alludes to her struggles.
05:52A sixth key required from a phantom's sixth partner.
06:00Someone you've forgotten.
06:07Number 5.
06:09Paladin's Stolen Cosmic Weapon
06:10We've given props to Vision's home turf already,
06:13but now we need to give Paladin his flowers.
06:16His base has a sweet collection of trinkets,
06:19including a huge blade thingamajig.
06:20You said you needed a power source.
06:29I got this as a last resort to bringing you in.
06:33Okay, the technical term is a glaive,
06:36and it's the one that Corvus Glaive used to brutalize Vision in Infinity War.
06:40Corvus Glaive's glaive.
06:42Say that three times really fast.
06:43You've seen this before?
06:50Oh, yes.
06:52Anyway, Corvus was part of Thanos' Black Order,
06:54and the fact that a cosmic weapon like this is now one of Paladin's props is insane.
06:59But it also proves to be a necessary tool for Vision in order to save Lisa.
07:04Corvus was a mad disciple of the Mad Titan,
07:06but at least his stuff can be put to good use all these years later.
07:14All this chatter about the Black Order reminds us that Thanos was one seriously bad dude.
07:19And if you like when we talk about villains, then you're in luck.
07:22We go on about all the biggest bads over on WatchMojo's 24-7 livestream.

07:41Vision goes through hell, and we don't just mean by the problems he encounters,
07:46but also by the journeys he undertakes.
07:49In this episode, he embarks on a descent into the underworld
07:52by going through the darkest corners of his mind.
08:03Along the way, he encounters hallucinations of Ultron, his kids, himself, and more.
08:09Vision's trip through technological hell feels similar to Inferno.
08:13Written by Dante Alighieri in the 14th century,
08:16it follows a fictional version of him traveling the nine circles of hell.
08:22Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
08:38We weren't keeping track of how many levels Vision went through,
08:41but he went down tons of dark paths and suffered on nearly each one.
08:45It might not be an exact one-to-one,
08:48but Vision and Dante are both going through it.
08:50And you have buried them deep within your processes because you were afraid.
08:54I'm not.
08:54Now you are running from them because you are a coward!
09:03Number 3. The Man in the Mirror
09:06Remember how we said Vision encounters more hallucinations?
09:10Jim and Phineas Horton are the more hallucinations we're talking about.
09:14Paul Bettany carrying a scene with two other versions of himself is a treat,
09:18but we didn't know how intense things would get.
09:21You see, I'm just the consequence of a man refusing to mourn,
09:24a father who squandered his entire fortune to make this failed machine,
09:30and in so doing lost his family and his legacy.
09:36Forgive us.
09:38The father-son's synthetic human relationship is a complicated one.
09:43Vision and Jim have a heated conversation,
09:45and at multiple points, we see Jim's reflection in a mirror.
09:48The way it's juxtaposed next to Vision is interesting.
09:52If you stop and look, it's like Vision's having a conversation with an inverted version of himself.
09:57I'm sorry about your father.
09:59No.
10:01He wasn't my father.
10:06He was my something.
10:07He wants to shun his emotions, but Jim encourages him to embrace them.
10:12Should Vision express vulnerability and acknowledge his feelings?
10:15Or should he remain a hollow husk?
10:17The blocking here does a great job of capturing that plight.
10:21I cannot have a son.
10:22Thomas Shepard is your son.
10:24Tommy Maximoff is your son.
10:26No, that's impossible.
10:26Why?
10:27No, I can't.
10:27Why?
10:28No!
10:28I said no!
10:30Number 2.
10:32Vision's new form.
10:33Vision Quest has made us think a lot about this synthezoid.
10:36Is White Vision actually just a carbon copy of the Vision we lost,
10:40or is he the real deal?
10:41Well, thanks to that whole convo with Jim, we discover the truth,
10:45which is that no matter what, this is our Vision after all.
10:49I am the Vision.
10:52I have always been the Vision.
10:56There is only one.
10:59And I am he.
11:00To make that revelation truly sink in, Vision looks into the mirror and adopts a new form.
11:05He combines his White Vision look with his classic design to create a fusion of the two.
11:16His distinctly different halves have now formed into one,
11:19and it's heartwarming to see him finally accept himself.
11:22Though we didn't get to see the new costume too much,
11:25we'll likely see it a ton in Episode 8.
11:34Number 1.
11:35The client is Ultron?
11:37Buckle up, everybody.
11:38This one's a head-scratcher.
11:40For weeks, fans have been wondering who the client is.
11:44While theories ranged everywhere from Power Broker to Doctor Doom,
11:48the identity was finally revealed to be Ultron.
11:51It's you.
11:53Not to punish,
11:57but observe.
11:59Wait, what?
12:01Okay, let's clear some things up.
12:02The client is most likely not Ultron,
12:05but instead, the original person that Ultron's human body was modeled after.
12:09Let's not forget that the AIs were based on real people.
12:12That being said,
12:13we're still being kept in the dark on a ton of other important info.
12:27Besides being chummy with Jocasta and playing a part in developing AI,
12:30the client is still a huge mystery.
12:32The only way we're going to figure him out is by seeing what the finale has in store.
12:44Are there any exciting Easter eggs or tremendous themes we left out?
