00:00What faith must befall a person who puts another person's life at risk just to make a profit?
00:06Desperate repeated raids, seizures, and arrests by NAFDA, fake, substandard, and unregistered
00:12products continue to circulate in the Nigerian markets. Between January and August 2026,
00:19the agency recorded 474 new cases, conducted 213 raids, arrested 52 suspects,
00:27and sealed 179 establishments. Under existing legislation, offenses involving counterfeit
00:35and fake drugs can attract 5 to 15 years imprisonment, a fine of up to 500,000 Naira or both.
00:43Yet, the problem persists, raising a critical question. Are the penalties under the current law
00:49strong enough to deter offenders and are they being adequately enforced? When these products cause harm,
00:56the consequences can extend far beyond the person who buys them. A child could lose their life or a
01:03family could lose its sole breadwinner. No penalty can undo such laws, but effective laws and enforcement
01:11could help prevent it. When the pursuit of profit puts human lives at risk, are Nigerian laws doing
01:18enough to stop the people responsible.
