00:00If you want to get promoted, here's some advice from the Chief Operating Officer at Chipotle.
00:04Stop bringing your boss problems and start coming to them with solutions.
00:08The COO, Jason Kidd, is constantly scouting for talent as he visits restaurants across
00:13the country. And one thing he looks for is how people respond when problems come up.
00:18His point is that anyone can identify a problem, but workers with leadership potential help figure
00:24out how to solve it. So the next time you spot a problem at work, don't just go to your
00:29boss and
00:29say, hey, we have this problem. Take a few minutes and ask yourself, what caused this? What are some
00:35possible solutions? And what do I think we should do next? Then go to your boss and say, hey, we
00:41have
00:41this problem. These are our options and this is my recommendation. Kidd says that strong problem
00:46solving skills are one of four qualities he looks for when promoting workers. He also looks for people
00:52who anticipate problems and own the outcome, meaning they take responsibility, whether it's good news
00:58or bad news. Those behaviors signal that you're not just waiting for someone to fix your problems.
01:03You're actively thinking like a leader and taking initiative. And you're showing that you can take
01:08on more responsibility. And the best way to get promoted is to start doing the job before you get
01:12it. So here's today's challenge. Think about one problem that you're dealing with at work. Before
01:17you go to your boss, come up with one possible solution. Or even better, come up with two and decide
01:22which
01:23one you want to recommend. Then go to them with that. The best way to show that you can handle
01:27more
01:28responsibility is to start doing it in real time.
01:30You'll see that as well.
01:30You.
