00:01It was late at night, but she only lived a few blocks away.
00:09Katie could not scream.
00:15Imagine that fear of knowing that you were being attacked
00:21and you cannot get the scream out.
00:27Katie kind of got angry and stormed out of a party last night
00:31and no one's seen her since.
00:33The police did ask for DNA from everyone.
00:37Everybody agrees. Everybody gives the swab,
00:39but there's one person who doesn't.
00:43That is when the whole nightmare started.
01:06August 30th, 2003, it's Labor Day weekend.
01:12For any college kid, it's the last weekend before school starts.
01:19I think anytime there's a three-day weekend,
01:21it's going to be a blowout weekend, right?
01:27Las Cruces, New Mexico, is a town
01:29along the Mexico border in the United States.
01:35They did have, you know, some bars and some places they would go,
01:39but it was mainly just getting together at friends' houses.
01:4722-year-old graduate Katie Seppich
01:50has just started university in Las Cruces.
01:54Katie wanted to go to New Mexico State
01:56because that's where all her friends were going.
02:00She was a marketing major for her undergrad.
02:03She got accepted to get into the college
02:06to get her master's degree in business administration.
02:10This is a very rigorous program,
02:12so this is kind of like, let's go out, let's have a good time.
02:16It's kind of like your last hurrah weekend.
02:20Katie and I went to college together.
02:24She was really kind of the life of the party.
02:29I would say our whole friend group, like, we just loved to laugh,
02:33but she was a very funny person and very goofy,
02:37not afraid to make fun of herself.
02:40To be hanging out with her would be to be laughing so hard that you'd be crying.
02:46From the moment she was born, she was feisty,
02:49and she was fearless, and that never changed.
02:55She was vivacious, and she, I mean, she was the cliché
02:59if she'd walk into a room and the room would light up.
03:02You'd get out a camera, and she would put on the biggest smile in the world,
03:07and she'd perform with her younger brother when he was really small.
03:14She'd try to teach him how to dance.
03:18She adored her little sister.
03:21I had to fight Katie to take care of the baby
03:24because she wanted to take care of her.
03:30To celebrate the Labor Day weekend,
03:31Katie is going on a night out with friends
03:34and her boyfriend of two years, Joe Bischoff.
03:38He was a real nice young man, and we really liked him.
03:42She wanted someone ambitious.
03:44She wanted someone that had a great sense of humor.
03:47Katie also wanted somebody that was very attractive.
03:50That was important to her.
03:52He was very hardworking.
03:57I was good friends with his cousin as well,
04:00so that contributed to kind of feeling like very comfortable with him,
04:06and Katie really seemed crazy about him,
04:10and I really trusted her judgment.
04:13You know, like I, even though, obviously,
04:17we all make stupid decisions, especially when we're 22,
04:19I truly felt like, you know,
04:22this might be the guy that she marries.
04:30We had taught our kids that college was not going to be just to be a free ride
04:34that we were going to pay.
04:36So Katie has a waitress at a restaurant in Las Cruces.
04:42Katie never minded working.
04:44She actually enjoyed it.
04:58Katie worked at the restaurant that night,
05:01and she got off
05:03at about 11 p.m.
05:07She went home, took a shower
05:09real quickly,
05:10put on different clothes,
05:12and they went out,
05:13a big group of them went out to a bar.
05:17Katie was dressed up.
05:18She was real cute,
05:19nice jeans and a nice blouse on.
05:23She did not have any idea
05:26that anything would have gone wrong that night.
05:31She and Joe were getting along very well.
05:33She was kind of floating around the rooms,
05:35visiting with everybody,
05:36and she was trying to be the center of everybody's attention.
05:39It was just, you know, classic Katie.
05:42She was talking to a lot of different people.
05:44She was laughing.
05:45She was having a great time.
05:52When the bars closed,
05:54they went to a friend's house.
05:56The friend's house isn't far from where Katie's living.
06:01They ended up going over there to,
06:03you know, continue their night
06:05and continue to party a little bit.
06:07There were a lot of kids
06:09at this friend's house.
06:13Katie and Joe were at this party
06:15and seemed to be having a really good time,
06:17but things take a little bit of a turn.
06:24At one point,
06:25Katie is looking for Joe.
06:32She walked into a room
06:33with another girl,
06:35and he was kissing her.
06:38I can only imagine
06:39what that moment was like
06:41for Katie,
06:43you know,
06:43to walk in,
06:44actually witness it,
06:46I think would have been
06:48just incredibly distressing for her.
06:50The two got in a fight,
06:52a fight that people heard.
06:56Katie literally went ballistic.
06:58She'd gotten very,
07:00very upset.
07:02She, you know,
07:03felt betrayed.
07:05Think about all these plans
07:07that she and Joe had
07:08about continuing their relationship.
07:10I think because my interactions
07:12with him
07:13had been so positive
07:15and he had told me
07:16how important she was to him,
07:17I was really shocked
07:19by that information.
07:23What does one do
07:24when they're upset
07:25at their boyfriend?
07:26and they take off.
07:37She just stomped out of there
07:39without her purse,
07:40without her keys,
07:42without her phone.
07:45I have never known her
07:47to just leave her stuff
07:48behind like that.
07:50It would have had to have been
07:51the heat of the moment.
07:54That, to me,
07:55really signals
07:56that she was going through
07:59something pretty
08:00emotionally traumatic.
08:07Katie decides to walk
08:08for 15 minutes
08:09back to her apartment.
08:12I think initially
08:13she was just,
08:14in her mind,
08:15she was just thinking
08:16once he found out
08:17she was gone,
08:18then he would feel bad
08:20and come looking for her.
08:24Katie lived in a beautiful,
08:26middle-class,
08:27safe neighborhood.
08:28We made sure
08:29that was very important to us.
08:31We liked it that Katie
08:32was in Las Cruces.
08:35It was late at night,
08:37but she only lived
08:38a few blocks away.
08:43Nobody was thinking
08:43this was a dangerous neighborhood
08:45that she shouldn't
08:46have been walking in.
09:06when I woke up that morning,
09:08I had the strangest feeling
09:11in the pit of my stomach,
09:13and I felt like something
09:14was wrong,
09:15but I didn't know
09:16what it was.
09:18this was Labor Day weekend.
09:22We were getting ready
09:23to have this backyard party.
09:31The phone rang.
09:33It was Katie's roommate, Tracy.
09:37Tracy said,
09:38have you talked to Katie today?
09:41Because Tracy knew
09:42that Katie and I
09:43talked every day
09:45on the phone.
09:47and I hadn't heard
09:48from Katie that day.
09:50And I said,
09:51why?
09:52Why are you asking me this, Tracy?
09:53And Tracy said,
09:55well,
09:55Katie kind of got angry
09:57and stormed out
09:58of a party last night,
09:59and no one's seen her since,
10:00and we can't find her.
10:03That is when
10:04the whole nightmare started.
10:10I was trying to be positive,
10:11I was trying to be positive,
10:11and I said,
10:12oh, Tracy,
10:13you know Katie,
10:14she's probably
10:15at a friend's house
10:15trying to scare Joe to death.
10:17And Tracy said,
10:18no,
10:19we've called all her friends.
10:20We've even called
10:21the hospitals
10:22to see if she was
10:23in an accident.
10:23We can't find her.
10:26It was mother's
10:27gut instinct.
10:29I knew at that moment,
10:31I knew,
10:32I knew she was gone.
10:36I said,
10:39I want you to
10:39make a missing persons report
10:42with the police.
10:44For her to be out
10:46all night long
10:47and none of her friends
10:49had any idea
10:50where she was,
10:52that really scared me a lot
10:55because I knew
10:57that Katie
10:58would always check in.
11:01Dave made the decision
11:03to go to Las Cruces.
11:05It's about a three
11:07and a half hour drive
11:09to go look for Kate.
11:12What her friends
11:13did not know
11:14and her family
11:14didn't know
11:15is that
11:16two individuals
11:18who had gone
11:18target shooting
11:19that morning
11:20had already discovered
11:22the body
11:24of a young woman.
11:35They go to the landfill
11:37and they find
11:39this body.
11:42They call police
11:44right away.
11:47Police can tell
11:49from the body
11:51that there were injuries
11:53to this body
11:54consistent with strangulation,
11:56consistent with rape.
11:59The police found
12:01truck tire tracks
12:03out there
12:04at the dump site
12:06and they had casted those
12:09so they actually pour
12:10a fluid
12:11onto the tire tracks
12:13to lift it
12:14to figure out
12:14the kind of tread.
12:16They know
12:17that that's evidence
12:18they're going to want
12:19to hold on to.
12:24When Tracy made
12:26the missing persons report,
12:28the authorities realized
12:29that the body
12:30that had been found
12:31in the desert
12:32could be Katie.
12:35At that moment
12:36was Dave
12:37on his way over
12:38to Katie's house.
12:39I said,
12:41I've got to call Dave
12:42and someone said,
12:43don't.
12:44They're driving.
12:45Wait.
12:46Let him get there.
12:54We got to Katie's house.
12:56There was a
12:58victim's advocate.
13:00There was a minister
13:01and a sheriff's
13:05department officer
13:06and they were all
13:07waiting for me
13:08in Katie's house
13:10and I saw her roommate
13:12over in the kitchen
13:14crying.
13:15Immediately
13:16when he saw them,
13:17he knew.
13:24They told me
13:25what had happened.
13:28The police department
13:30think it's Katie's body.
13:33He had to go
13:34identify her
13:36as next of kin
13:37at the morgue.
13:41We went into
13:42the basement
13:43of the hospital
13:44in Las Cruces
13:46and went into the morgue.
13:48I can still see,
13:51you know,
13:51to this day,
13:52I can see
13:54Katie's face
13:55when they pulled back
13:55the sheet
13:57and you could tell
13:58that,
13:59you know,
14:01she had been
14:02kind of terrorized.
14:05Her face was distraught
14:06and she had bad bruising
14:08around her neck.
14:10It was the hardest thing
14:11I've ever done
14:12in my whole life.
14:18when you,
14:20you see your child
14:24laying on a slab
14:26in the morgue,
14:27you know,
14:28it just affected me
14:30for the rest of my life.
14:35after he made
14:36that identification,
14:37he called me
14:38and said,
14:39J.N.,
14:40she's gone.
14:46It was
14:48the darkest
14:49moment
14:50of my life.
14:54The world
14:55lost all of its color.
14:56Everything just went
14:58to gray
14:58and
15:02I just felt like
15:03I was being plunged
15:04into just a black pit,
15:06you know.
15:09It was excruciating.
15:12She was such a light
15:14in our family's life
15:17and to think
15:18of that light
15:19being gone
15:20was just
15:22inconceivable.
15:30You know,
15:30Katie had
15:33one of the biggest,
15:34most liveliest personalities.
15:36I mean,
15:36she was kind of
15:37a larger-than-life person
15:38and so
15:38to imagine
15:40that she was gone
15:40was just
15:41unbelievable.
15:53Police rapidly
15:54started to
15:55have conversations
15:56with everyone
15:57at the party.
15:59Joe Bischoff,
16:00he did everything wrong
16:01in terms of
16:02alleviating yourself
16:03as a suspect.
16:04So he initially
16:05talks to them
16:06and tells law enforcement
16:08that he noticed
16:10at one point
16:10that Katie wasn't there
16:12but he assumed
16:13she had gone home
16:14and he denied
16:15that he had an argument.
16:17They quickly realized
16:18that he isn't
16:19telling the truth
16:21because people
16:22are saying,
16:22oh yeah,
16:23there was a big blowout
16:24right between Katie
16:25and Joe.
16:26So that starts
16:27bumping him up
16:28as a suspect.
16:31The police did ask
16:33for DNA
16:33from everyone.
16:35They go to Katie's
16:37friends,
16:37her family members,
16:38anybody who's willing
16:39to give a swab,
16:41rule them out.
16:42And everybody agrees.
16:44Everybody gives the swab
16:45but there's one person
16:46who doesn't
16:47and it's her boyfriend,
16:50Joe Bischoff.
16:56His father
16:57immediately hired
16:58an attorney
16:59and that was
16:59the advice
17:00of the attorney.
17:02There was nothing
17:03illegal about him
17:04not giving his DNA.
17:07He has a right
17:08not to say no
17:10but it certainly
17:11made police curious
17:12as to why not.
17:16My attitude
17:17totally changed
17:18about him
17:18and the person
17:19where he was
17:20because you know
17:22I was under
17:23the impression
17:24that if it had
17:25been my girlfriend
17:26or my wife
17:28and that had
17:29happened to her
17:29I would be the first
17:30one to volunteer
17:31to get it done.
17:33Especially if I knew
17:34I was innocent.
17:36He claimed
17:37that he had gotten
17:38in Katie's car
17:40and had driven
17:41up and down
17:41the streets
17:42looking for Katie
17:43that night
17:44when he found out
17:45she had left
17:47but it turned out
17:49it was several
17:49hours later
17:50before he
17:51actually went out
17:52and got in the car
17:53and went and looked
17:53for her
17:54that made us
17:55very suspicious.
17:58After that first
17:59contact with law
18:00enforcement
18:01the attorney
18:01would not allow him
18:02to talk anymore.
18:04He left town
18:05shortly after this
18:07happened.
18:08That made them
18:09even more suspicious.
18:25The body
18:26of 22-year-old
18:27Katie Seppich
18:28has been discovered
18:29at a landfill site
18:30in Las Cruces.
18:34Police take Katie's body
18:36back to have an autopsy
18:38performed.
18:41Through her autopsy
18:43they were able
18:44to discover
18:45that someone raped her
18:47and then strangled her.
18:51The autopsy also finds
18:54that Katie's body
18:55has been partially burnt.
18:58The fire that burned Katie
19:01did not do as much damage
19:05as I'm sure someone hoped
19:06it would.
19:12During any autopsy
19:13involving a violent crime
19:15the medical examiner
19:16is going to look
19:17under the fingernails.
19:21Katie fought so hard
19:22for her life
19:23that under her fingernails
19:25she had skin and blood.
19:26She had clearly scratched
19:28her perpetrator.
19:31They remove
19:32a significant amount
19:33of material, skin
19:35and they preserve
19:37all of that DNA.
19:39They take the DNA
19:41and they put it
19:42into the national registry
19:43to see if it comes up
19:44with any hits.
19:47It doesn't show anything.
19:50There's no match.
19:52There was no one
19:53that was known
19:55in the database already
19:56that we could compare to
19:57and say
19:58that was the person
19:59who was involved.
20:02The detectives said to me
20:04we will be running
20:05that once a week
20:06through all the offenders
20:08that are placed
20:09into the National Forensic
20:11DNA Database
20:12called CODIS.
20:13There's new people
20:14being put in there
20:15all the time
20:16to look for a match.
20:17And I said
20:18well he was such a monster
20:21that he'll be arrested
20:23for something else
20:24and when he's arrested
20:25you know
20:25when they take
20:26his fingerprints
20:26and his mug shot
20:27they'll swab his cheek
20:28put that in there
20:29and the detectives said
20:30oh no Jayanne
20:31it doesn't work that way.
20:34It's illegal
20:36in New Mexico
20:37and almost all
20:39of the country
20:40to take a DNA sample
20:42from someone
20:42when they're arrested.
20:46it is only
20:47upon conviction
20:48the court orders
20:49that you have to
20:50turn over your DNA.
20:53That's crazy.
20:55We have this technology
20:56why aren't we using it?
20:59Why aren't we doing that?
21:00And this was just
21:02very soon
21:04after Katie had died
21:05I mean
21:05probably three weeks
21:07after she had died
21:08and I thought
21:10I can't believe this.
21:14With no suspect
21:15police look for evidence
21:16along Katie's route
21:18home from the party.
21:19At the time
21:20that we're investigating
21:21this case
21:21and the police are
21:22looking at the disturbance
21:24of the rocks
21:24outside of her window
21:25because they had
21:26rock landscaping
21:27to see if there was
21:29any struggle
21:30did it happen there?
21:32There was movement
21:34of that landscaping rock there.
21:36And one of her roommates
21:37actually found Katie's shoes
21:39behind the bushes
21:41in front of her bedroom window.
21:45Their best investigative guess
21:48was that this is where
21:49the struggle took place
21:50but we didn't know
21:51the details
21:52of who
21:54and how did this come about.
21:58Katie's parents
21:59offer up
22:00a $50,000 reward
22:02for information
22:03leading to who did this
22:04to Katie.
22:15Katie's boyfriend
22:16Joe Bishop
22:17is still a suspect
22:18but without his DNA
22:20police can't prove
22:22his involvement.
22:23The detectives
22:24that had been working
22:25on Katie's case
22:26said that there might be
22:28semen on Katie's bedsheets
22:31and he said
22:32we are going to have
22:33that tested
22:33to see if it matches
22:34what's under Katie's fingernails.
22:36They obtained DNA
22:38from Katie's sheets.
22:42They run it against
22:43the DNA found on Katie.
22:50It didn't match.
22:52Can you imagine
22:54the shock
22:57police now know
22:58at this point
23:00he didn't do it.
23:04Joe's DNA
23:05the one chance
23:07that detectives had
23:08the one thing
23:09they were going for
23:10didn't pan out.
23:12So at this point
23:13there is no evidence
23:14there is no suspects.
23:18Law enforcement
23:18didn't give up
23:19but at one point
23:21you don't have
23:21a suspect anymore
23:23and sometimes
23:24cases go cold.
23:27You just
23:28didn't know
23:29you were just unsettled
23:30and had this
23:31sense of limbo.
23:36I can't imagine
23:38what they felt
23:39and what they went
23:40through when
23:40there was a constant
23:41dead end.
23:42With the case
23:43going cold
23:44Katie's mom
23:45Jay Ann
23:46starts an investigation
23:47of her own.
23:49When I first
23:50found out
23:50that in New Mexico
23:52you couldn't take
23:53DNA until someone
23:54was convicted
23:54of a violent felony.
23:57I just
23:58I thought that's
23:59horribly wrong
24:00it made me angry.
24:02Jay Ann Seppich
24:03began a crusade
24:06and said
24:07this is ridiculous
24:08that we're not
24:08taking DNA
24:09from people
24:11upon arrest.
24:13Katie's parents
24:14wanted to know
24:15that people
24:16who perpetuate
24:17these crimes
24:18need to have
24:20their DNA
24:20put in
24:21almost immediately
24:22upon arrest
24:23so that
24:25they can't do
24:26this to other people
24:27or that if they try
24:29they're going to get
24:30caught pretty darn
24:31quickly.
24:32I just couldn't
24:33stop thinking about it.
24:34I literally started
24:36doing tons and tons
24:38of research
24:39on the internet
24:40making phone calls
24:41talking to people
24:42because I just thought
24:43you know
24:44this is wrong.
24:46I found a study
24:47that had been done
24:48by the city
24:48of Chicago
24:49they followed
24:50eight convicted felons
24:52and they
24:54determined
24:55that if
24:56those eight men
24:58had had their
24:58cheek swabbed
24:59at their first
25:00felony arrest
25:0153 rapes
25:03and murders
25:03would have been
25:04prevented
25:04not solved
25:06prevented
25:07it just became
25:08a burning passion
25:10to me.
25:13This became
25:14their mission
25:16this is how
25:17they decided
25:18we are going
25:18to let
25:19Katie's
25:20legacy
25:20live on
25:21through
25:21this
25:23we have
25:23to change
25:24the law.
25:40three months
25:41after Katie's
25:42murder
25:42police receive
25:44information
25:44about another
25:45violent attack
25:46on two female
25:47students
25:48in Las Cruces.
25:50A young man
25:52breaks into
25:52the apartment
25:53of two college
25:54women
25:55he's armed
25:56with a knife
25:57and they
25:59thankfully
25:59are able
26:00to barricade
26:01themselves
26:01in a bathroom
26:02they call
26:03911
26:04police get
26:05there
26:06and arrest
26:07Gabriel Avila
26:12Gabriel Avila
26:13is living
26:14in Las Cruces
26:17He was
26:19an illegal
26:20immigrant
26:20that came
26:20into New Mexico
26:21and had a job
26:22he was applying
26:23for a visa
26:24but had been
26:26rejected for that
26:27for a green card
26:32He was married
26:33he had children
26:34but did have
26:37a drug issue
26:38cocaine
26:40Gabriel Avila
26:41became a case
26:43that was assigned
26:44to me
26:44as the district
26:44attorney
26:45he was arrested
26:47in November
26:48of 2003
26:49he was charged
26:50with aggravated
26:51burglary
26:52because he was
26:52armed
26:54those two girls
26:55they were chosen
26:57pretty much
26:57at random
26:59in our mind
27:00he had just seen
27:01them outside
27:02their apartment
27:02and decided
27:04that he was
27:05going to take
27:05advantage of that
27:12he was in jail
27:13for a little bit
27:14and posted bond
27:16he actually left
27:17the country
27:17and went to Mexico
27:18to keep us
27:19from prosecuting him
27:21I had planned
27:21to not return
27:23his lawyer
27:24had told him
27:25he needed to come back
27:26so he didn't make
27:27things worse
27:27for himself
27:28and so then
27:29he did return
27:30from Mexico
27:33in New Mexico
27:34we had a law
27:35that when someone
27:36is convicted
27:37of a felony
27:39regardless of
27:39whether you go
27:40to prison or not
27:41upon conviction
27:42the court orders
27:42that you have
27:43to turn over
27:44your DNA
27:52he's arrested
27:54convicted
27:54put in prison
27:56that his DNA
27:57is taken
28:00it wasn't uploaded
28:02into this database
28:03for almost two years
28:05there was various
28:07administrative delays
28:08and backlogs
28:09throughout all these years
28:12Katie's parents
28:13and her family
28:14and her friends
28:15are waiting to find out
28:16who did this
28:17who is this monster
28:19who's out there
28:19we need to find
28:21him
28:31three years
28:32since Katie's murder
28:33Avila's DNA
28:34is finally tested
28:36the second
28:38that that DNA
28:39hits
28:40that database
28:41it pinged
28:45there was a hit
28:47of it matching
28:48the DNA
28:50under Katie's fingernails
28:52to the DNA
28:53of Gabriel Avila
28:55it's incredible
28:57I mean
28:58it's like
28:58we've got him
29:00we have the evidence
29:02that's gonna
29:03convict him of this
29:04a full
29:05complete
29:06DNA match
29:07we had gone
29:08three and a half years
29:09without knowing
29:10who had done it
29:11once they had
29:13his DNA
29:13they were then
29:14able to really go
29:15do that additional
29:16detective work
29:17to be able
29:18to ensure
29:19that the case
29:20was airtight
29:21the more information
29:22they have
29:23the better it is
29:24because then
29:26he doesn't get
29:26to lie his way
29:28through it
29:31law enforcement
29:32discovered
29:32that he owned
29:33a truck
29:34however
29:34he no longer
29:35had the truck
29:36he had sold it
29:39and they tracked
29:40down his truck
29:41they had taken
29:42imprints of the
29:43tire tracks
29:44right by her body
29:45in the desert
29:47investigators
29:48discover
29:48that the tire
29:50tracks match
29:53so that was
29:55another bit
29:56of evidence
29:56that they could
29:57use
30:03with evidence
30:04against Avila
30:05growing
30:05police explore
30:07another possible
30:08link to Katie
30:09Katie's parents
30:10knew that Katie
30:11wore two rings
30:13very consistently
30:15and so they
30:16were able to
30:16identify the
30:17jewelry that she
30:18may have been
30:18wearing that
30:18night
30:20we knew that
30:23there were two
30:24rings missing
30:25that she had on
30:26that were missing
30:27from her body
30:29they went to
30:30his ex-wife
30:31she had divorced
30:32him when he fled
30:33after he skipped
30:35bail
30:36and asked her
30:37and asked her
30:38if any time
30:39after
30:39Labor Day
30:40weekend
30:402003
30:41had
30:42her husband
30:44given her
30:44a ring
30:45and she said
30:47no
30:47but when I was
30:49cleaning out
30:49his truck
30:50to sell it
30:51I found a ring
30:53in the
30:53ashtray
30:56Avila's wife
30:56kept the ring
30:57in case she needed
30:58to sell it
30:59to support her
31:00children
31:01and so she still
31:02had this ring
31:03I mean it is
31:07really unbelievable
31:08I mean so many
31:10years later
31:10it's pretty
31:13like
31:13Katie
31:14Katie was working
31:15behind the scenes
31:16to make that happen
31:19I identified it
31:22and it was indeed
31:23the ring
31:25the reason this ring
31:26is so important
31:27is because
31:28Gabriel and Katie
31:29were strangers
31:30to each other
31:31there is absolutely
31:32no reason
31:33that something
31:34that belonged
31:34to Katie Seppich
31:35should be in
31:36Gabriel Avila's
31:38truck
31:38nothing
31:39and so the fact
31:41that it was
31:42showed that
31:43he had interacted
31:45with her
31:46with both
31:47forensic
31:47and physical
31:48evidence
31:49linking Avila
31:49to Katie's
31:50death
31:50police
31:51question him
31:52in prison
31:54he waived
31:55his rights
31:55to the presence
31:56of a lawyer
31:57he initially
31:58lies
31:58and lies
31:59and lies
32:00how someone
32:01else was involved
32:02someone else
32:02killed her
32:03he did
32:04rape her
32:05but
32:05he did not
32:06actually kill her
32:07and it was
32:08the other person's
32:09idea to take her
32:10out to the dump
32:10and throw her body
32:12and put her
32:12on fire
32:17but it was
32:18the ring
32:19when that became
32:20part of the
32:21discussion
32:23he seemed
32:24to flinch a little
32:25and he kept saying
32:26where'd you find
32:26the ring
32:27where'd you find
32:27the ring
32:29and it seemed
32:30more real to him
32:31at that point
32:31when he then
32:32started to admit
32:33that yes
32:34he took both
32:35her rings
32:36he had sold
32:36one of them
32:37in Juarez
32:37Mexico
32:38and that
32:39he
32:40had left
32:41the other
32:41one
32:41in the
32:43ashtray
32:54convicted
32:54begler
32:55Gabriel Avila
32:56is being
32:57questioned
32:57by police
32:58about his
32:59involvement
32:59in the matter
33:00of 22
33:01year old
33:01Katie

33:18he says
33:20that he had

33:23Las Cruces
33:24and that
33:25he had
33:25gotten
33:26some cocaine
33:26from somebody
33:27in a
33:28bathroom
33:29at that
33:29bar
33:31it was

33:37Katie
