00:32Nobody deserves to be preyed upon.
00:35There are bad people, and there is evil.
00:40I noticed that he was active on Instagram and Facebook,
00:45but he was not posting anything, which felt a little odd.
00:49So many questions, so many whys.
00:53What next?
00:55This is going on too long. We're past 48 hours.
01:05This is going on too long.
01:19Political consultant John Umberger
01:21is on an express train for Manhattan from Washington, D.C.
01:26The 33-year-old's trip to the Big Apple
01:28will be a mix of business and a night out on the town.
01:34John was very curious, extroverted,
01:38never met a stranger starting when he was a baby.
01:42He was always interested in other people,
01:45outgoing and curious,
01:47always coming up with a creative solution,
01:51excellent at problem solving.
01:53He thrived at problem solving.
01:55If you talk to people he worked for under,
02:00they would all say the same thing,
02:02that John would deliver
02:03in ways they never thought imaginable professionally.
02:07I just wanted to take a moment to thank my mom
02:09for whipping this in the shape.
02:11I'll pay him forward, don't worry.
02:15I think anybody who met him
02:18knew that he was different and unique.
02:20Did a lot of taking care of me,
02:22a lot of protecting me too.
02:25Loved being that role of the older brother.
02:30I am a very close friend of John's
02:34and we will have known each other
02:3620 years at this point.
02:38He was the happiest person you ever met.
02:41He never had a bad day.
02:45John was a master of relationships.
02:48He could network in his sleep.
02:51John's talents come early in life.
02:54He started speaking in full sentences
02:57when he was 13 months old.
03:00He was oftentimes annoyingly
03:02like a walking cyclopedia.
03:05He knew lots of tidbits
03:08about a whole lot of different things,
03:09even as a seven-year-old,
03:11eight-year-old, nine-year-old.
03:13Lots of energy.
03:14Loved having the attention on him, for sure.
03:18He mostly grew up in Atlanta
03:21and then on a farm in a place
03:23called Cumming, Georgia,
03:25about 45 minutes outside of Atlanta.
03:29John realized early
03:31that his Southern charm
03:32and sharp-tongued wit
03:33was perfect for the political arena.
03:36John, at the age of 15,
03:39got an internship
03:40with a lieutenant gubernatorial candidate
03:43in the state of Georgia.
03:47Politics is something
03:48that he was always interested in
03:50and I think he probably got that
03:52from his mother
03:53who worked in politics herself.
03:55When he graduated,
03:57he immediately left to D.C.
04:05In 2022,
04:07John lands a big job
04:08working as a director
04:09at a Washington lobbying organization,
04:13a position that requires him
04:15to work in both D.C.
04:16and Manhattan.
04:19He liked being in Washington, D.C.
04:22He liked being in New York City.
04:26I do think he was planning on moving.
04:28I know that his time in New York
04:30and just getting a taste of New York City
04:32really kind of lit up his eyes.
04:37John is set to stay
04:38at his firm's Upper East Side townhouse
04:40where he's overseeing renovation work.
04:43They wanted to replicate
04:45what they had in Washington, D.C.,
04:47which is office space,
04:49meeting space, hospitality,
04:52as well as accommodations
04:53for people to stay overnight.
04:56He was hiring contractors,
04:59interviewing elevator engineers,
05:01and he was really, really excited
05:03about this project.
05:04And that's why he was in New York
05:08the weekend of Memorial Day 2022.
05:13He actually invited me
05:15at the last minute to come up.
05:18Regrettably for me as his mother,
05:20said no,
05:22that we would not change our plans
05:25and come to New York.
05:40The nightlife in New York City
05:42is pretty uncomparable
05:43to the majority of the cities,
05:45at least the United States.
05:46The Friday night of May 27th,
05:50it started about 7 o'clock
05:52at Little Frankie's
05:53in Lower Manhattan.
05:56Everybody works very hard
05:58in New York City,
05:59and some people have multiple jobs,
06:01and so it's a work hard,
06:03play hard culture,
06:05and the energy is so contagious
06:08that it just sort of sweeps you away.
06:12Then he met other friends
06:14at a place called Johnny's Rooftop Bar.
06:17I was at home in Mississippi
06:18at my parents' house,
06:20and we text 24-7,
06:23and I remember he sent me a selfie of him,
06:26and it's like an iconic photo.
06:29There's, like, buildings in the background,
06:31one of the last photos taken of him.
06:33I can't remember exactly the message.
06:36It was just like,
06:37checking in, love you.
06:41He went back to the townhouse
06:43around 11.45 Friday night
06:46to change clothes.
06:52John's last stop of the night
06:54will be in one of New York's
06:56most legendary and notorious
06:58neighborhoods.
06:59I'm an investigative reporter
07:00in New York
07:01and have been covering the city
07:02for many years.
07:04I used to live, actually,
07:05just north of Hell's Kitchen.
07:08Hell's Kitchen in New York City
07:09is in what we call Midtown.
07:12It's a bustling area.
07:14People everywhere.
07:15It's constant.
07:16The way you see it
07:17at 3 o'clock in the afternoon
07:18is pretty much the way it is
07:19going to be at 3 o'clock
07:20in the morning
07:21when the clubs get out.
07:21It's a little on the edge.
07:23You do have to have
07:24your wits about you.
07:25This is not a place for tourists.
07:27The Hell's Kitchen neighborhood
07:29is a predominantly,
07:31it's like a party atmosphere.
07:33Kind of a lot of clubs,
07:34a lot of bars,
07:35big nightlife.
07:37And it happens to be
07:39that that area
07:40is predominantly known
07:41for gay bars
07:43and the LGBT community.
07:50I think the rest of us
07:52knew John was gay
07:54before he knew he was gay.
07:57For a lot of mothers,
07:59I think you intuitively
08:01sense something.
08:03I would say
08:04we didn't start openly
08:06talking about it,
08:07John and I,
08:08until I was an adult.
08:12John did not like
08:13to be known
08:16for his sexual identity.
08:18He wanted to be known
08:19as John,
08:20but yet it was so much
08:22a part of him
08:23and we would not have had
08:25the great John we had
08:27if he had not been gay,
08:29in my opinion.
08:31I described John
08:32as someone
08:33who never came out
08:35because he never
08:36needed to come out.
08:37It was a part
08:38of his personality
08:39and his aura.
08:48The Q nightclub
08:49had just opened
08:49a year prior.
08:51The Q nightclub
08:52is what you would think
08:55if you had a picture
08:55of a nightclub
08:56in New York City,
08:57that's what this is.
08:58These clubs
08:59are multi-stories
09:01with something going on
09:03different on each floor.
09:06So you can experience
09:08different types of music.
09:11There's all these lights,
09:13there's lights
09:13and music and people
09:15and it's disorienting.
09:17Bright lights,
09:18loud music,
09:19the boom, boom, boom.
09:34So Linda,
09:35John's mother,
09:36called me
09:39and she said,
09:40have you heard from John?
09:41I'm worried.
09:43It's been a few days
09:44since I've heard from him
09:45and although I hadn't heard
09:46from him in two days,
09:48I assumed somebody had
09:51and I really initially
09:53wasn't concerned
09:54but I did promise her
09:57that I would check in
09:58with other people
10:00to see who he was with.
10:04His good guy friends
10:05here in D.C.
10:06called me and was like,
10:07have you spoken to John?
10:10And I was like,
10:10matter of fact,
10:11like it has been a little bit.
10:13I haven't heard from him.
10:16I was wrapping up
10:18my last few days teaching
10:21when we got the text,
10:23siblings and I,
10:24in our family group chat
10:25that John was MIA
10:27and no one had heard from him.
10:30This is going on too long.
10:31We're past 48 hours.
10:34I noticed that he was active
10:36on Instagram and Facebook
10:38but he was not posting anything
10:41which felt a little odd
10:42because John was a prolific
10:44poster.
10:45It is time to put the phone in.
10:46I am an influencer.
10:48John loved his social media platforms,
10:52particularly TikTok.
10:54I remember one infamous video
10:56that made him
10:56what we call TikTok famous.
10:58He had this vacuum.
11:01You guys have got to watch this.
11:02So we're just going to pass
11:03over the rug really quickly.
11:05Look at what we found.
11:06It was a very expensive,
11:08nice vacuum cleaner
11:09and next thing he knew
11:10was 2 million plus views
11:12on TikTok.
11:13over a vacuum cleaner.
11:15Social media suited
11:17John's character
11:18and personality
11:19very much so.
11:21The recent activity
11:23on his accounts
11:24sends a chill
11:25through the Umberger family.
11:28Anything you send
11:30text-wise
11:31is being read
11:33and we're still getting
11:35and we're still getting
11:36no response
11:36which is just not making
11:38any sense at all.
11:42Then his siblings
11:43all received a notice
11:46saying John was no longer
11:48sharing his location with them.
11:50None of our texts
11:51were going through anymore
11:52at that point.
11:53That's when alarm bells
11:55did start to go off.
12:07No one has seen
12:08or heard
12:09from 33-year-old
12:10John Umberger
12:11since a night out
12:13in New York City.
12:15Days have passed
12:16and friends and family
12:18are on edge.
12:20For me it felt like
12:21walking a tightrope
12:23of extremes.
12:24Either this
12:25you know
12:26roll your eyes
12:27he's fine
12:27and everything's
12:28going to be fine
12:29and then
12:29by the end of the day
12:31I'm going to hear
12:31that he's been located
12:33or that he's
12:34you know
12:35something just happened
12:35with his phone
12:36or the opposite side
12:39which is something
12:39horrible
12:40has actually happened.
12:46I was able
12:47to track down
12:48the address
12:48of the townhouse
12:50went online
12:51and looked up
12:52what precinct covered
12:54I called
12:55the 19th precinct
12:56and said
12:57I'd like to report
12:58a missing person.
13:00They offered
13:01to do a well check
13:03and that they would go
13:04to the last known address
13:06as well as check
13:08hospital records
13:09and arrest records.
13:10I have to tell you
13:11I would have been
13:13thrilled to know
13:14that John
13:15had been arrested.
13:16I knew that
13:18if I got a text message
13:20it was going to go
13:21one way
13:21if I got a phone call
13:22it was going to go
13:23the other way.
13:26Shortly thereafter
13:29I received a call
13:33informing me
13:34that in fact
13:37they had found
13:38John's body.
13:44it's not anything
13:46you ever want
13:47to hear
13:47you know
13:48as a mother
13:49it's the worst
13:51news
13:51in the world.
13:58I just remember
14:00sinking immediately
14:00to the ground
14:02the rush of blood
14:03that went to my head
14:06and you just kind of
14:07let a primal wail out
14:08you can't hear anything
14:10it kind of feels like
14:10you're in a wind tunnel
14:13it just feels like
14:14somebody has sucker punched
14:16you in the gut
14:17and you're just helpless
14:18on the ground
14:19for a moment
14:21trying to process
14:22what your ears have heard
14:23and taken in.
14:28when the uniformed cops
14:30found John
14:30he was in the bedroom
14:32on the bed
14:32with his feet
14:33kind of hanging
14:34off the bed
14:34and him lying
14:36on his back
14:38facing the ceiling
14:41fully clothed
14:43his jewelry
14:44still on
14:47just looked like
14:48he passed out
14:49and never woke up
14:51there was no signs
14:52of a struggle
14:52the way he was found
14:54it looked like
14:54he had just laid back
14:55on the bed
14:56and just never got up
14:59it's as if
15:00John
15:00sat on the bed
15:02to tie his shoe
15:04and fell back
15:06backwards
15:07and that there
15:08was no
15:10appeared to be
15:11no foul play
15:12which
15:13didn't make sense
15:15to me
15:15that is so beyond
15:17the realm of anything
15:19plausible
15:20in my brain
15:21and in my siblings
15:22brains
15:24an immediate
15:26toxicology report
15:27points to
15:27excessive amounts
15:28of cocaine
15:29in John's system
15:33definitely a shock
15:34to hear
15:35that people
15:36were trying to
15:36suggest
15:37that your older
15:37brother died
15:38of an overdose
15:40so many questions
15:41so many whys
15:43a lot of it
15:45like what next
15:48at that point
15:49a homicide detective
15:50had not been
15:51assigned to
15:52John's case
15:53they were sticking
15:55to their perspective
15:57that you really
15:58don't know
15:58your child
15:59and that
16:01John died
16:02of an overdose
16:06Linda Umberger
16:07heads to New York
16:08in search of answers
16:09to what's really
16:10happened
16:11to her eldest son
16:12part of our purpose
16:14in going to New York
16:15was to retrieve
16:16John's body
16:17and bring it back
16:19to Atlanta
16:20to have a funeral
16:22and be buried
16:23I was in the chapel
16:26with his body
16:28in a body bag
16:29and praying
16:31and asking God
16:33asking John
16:34tell me what
16:35I need to know
16:36because none of this
16:37is making sense
16:38and in a very clear voice
16:41John said
16:43I did not do this
16:44to myself
16:45and I need you
16:46to go get the people
16:47who did this
16:48and stop them
16:52no one really knows
16:53until they're thrust
16:54in it
16:55and my mom's response
16:57was not to crumble
16:57but to just
16:59put on a shield
17:00and march forwards
17:03you have to understand
17:04the second
17:05that the NYPD
17:06ruled
17:07this is an overdose
17:08it's accidental
17:10done
17:10there is nothing else
17:12that they
17:14needed to do
17:15at that point
17:15we need to retrace
17:18John's steps
17:19and see what
17:20we can figure out
17:24I let
17:25Linda lead the way
17:27I just always
17:29tried to make sure
17:30she knew
17:30like whatever you need
17:31from me
17:32I'm here
17:34to help you
17:39Linda starts
17:41with John's
17:42digital footprint
17:43to piece together
17:44the story
17:44of his last night out
17:46the last cab ride
17:49that John ordered
17:50through the cab app
17:52he got into
17:54but he got out of
17:56and he didn't
17:58complete the journey
17:59so he got out of that
18:01which we thought
18:02was why would he do that
18:04it became pretty apparent
18:06very quickly
18:06that we were just
18:08scratching the surface
18:08and that there was so much
18:10more than what
18:11initially met the eye
18:13of John's passing
18:15in my gut
18:16something's not right
18:17and we need to
18:19problem solve
18:19and trying to
18:21figure out
18:22where's the phone
18:24are credit cards
18:25still there
18:26that was one of my
18:27first questions
18:28when the detective
18:30called me back
18:31that I kept asking
18:33did you see the phone
18:35was the phone
18:36in the townhouse
18:38finally they said no
18:41and then I asked
18:43about the wallet
18:44and the wallet
18:45was found empty
18:48they wanted to present
18:50to me
18:51the initial NYPD
18:53detectives
18:53that John
18:54had gone out
18:55to a club
18:56most likely
18:57been robbed
18:58at a club
18:59and then
19:00was so depressed
19:02over what happened
19:03came home
19:03and overdosed
19:04on drugs
19:06like no we didn't
19:07we know who John
19:09is a person
19:10and like
19:10by no means
19:11I obviously thought
19:12he was perfect
19:13I'm biased
19:14but I knew
19:15that it was not
19:16a self-inflicted
19:17situation
19:18from the beginning
19:23my niece
19:25was able
19:25to access
19:26John's phone records
19:28and start going
19:29through some things
19:30and notice
19:31that there were
19:32PayPal payments
19:33made
19:34there were like
19:35$5,000 worth
19:37of charges
19:37that began
19:38Saturday morning
19:41Linda and her family
19:43present their findings
19:44to police
19:45and this time
19:46they listen
19:49I was notified
19:50about this case
19:51by the 19th Precinct
19:52detective squad
19:52we got a call
19:54from them
19:54telling us
19:55that they had
19:56a DOA case
19:58which is
19:58a discovery
19:59of a dead body
20:00and that
20:01they had found out
20:03in the days after
20:04that the decedent's
20:05credit cards
20:06were being used
20:08in various locations
20:09around the city
20:10so when they notified
20:12us of that
20:13it becomes
20:14a suspicious death
20:15on the surface
20:17it looks like
20:18an overdose
20:18until you find out
20:19that you know
20:21the credit cards
20:23are being used
20:23after the time
20:24of death
20:26his accounts
20:27were completely
20:28drained
20:29he was murdered
20:32and they said
20:33y'all are way
20:34ahead of us
20:35in your
20:36detective work
20:37well it's really
20:38I just wanted to
20:39take a moment
20:39to thank my mom
20:40for whipping
20:41this into shape
20:42nearly a week
20:46after John's body
20:47is discovered
20:47detective Randy Rose
20:49and his partner
20:50launch a possible
20:51homicide investigation
20:52my first move
20:54was to find out
20:55you know
20:55what financial accounts
20:56he had
20:56what had been accessed
20:57what credit cards
20:59were being used
20:59and where they were
21:00and try to figure out
21:01who was using the cards
21:03you're chasing the clock
21:05to try to get the video
21:06from where the cards
21:07are being used
21:07because most of these
21:08video systems
21:10in these stores
21:11will only last
21:12a finite amount of time
21:15John's credit card history
21:17also sends police
21:18to the club
21:18in Hell's Kitchen
21:19where he was last seen
21:27outside the club
21:28it looks like
21:29John is looking
21:29for his next move
21:34I don't think
21:35he was ready
21:35for the night to end
21:41I think he was looking
21:42for
21:43you know
21:44to continue partying
21:45or figure out
21:46wherever he was
21:47going to go next
21:49then you see
21:51these two guys
21:52approach John
21:53out of nowhere
21:54John walk off
21:55with them
21:56and the first thing
21:57that went through
21:57my head was
21:58you know
21:58how does he know
21:59these guys
22:01you know
22:02how did they meet up
22:03like what brought
22:04them to him
22:04what brought John
22:05to them
22:06you know
22:06what was the connection
22:07between the two of them
22:08and ultimately
22:09who are they
22:25after John Umberger's
22:27cases reclassified
22:28as a possible homicide
22:30detectives scour
22:31all CCTV feeds
22:33of areas
22:33that John
22:34was known to visit
22:35over Memorial Day
22:36weekend
22:37I mean
22:38the video
22:39is key
22:40because that
22:40kind of fills in
22:41as many of the blanks
22:42as you can
22:43it helps you
22:44reconstruct
22:45the whole chain
22:46of events
22:48John was carrying
22:50around
22:51an umbrella
22:52with him
22:53to Tao
22:54and to the queue
22:55he left the umbrella
22:57in the queue
22:58so he comes back
22:59gets his umbrella
23:01gets in a taxi
23:03and decides
23:03he wants to come back
23:08I think he didn't
23:09want the night
23:10to end
23:11outside the club
23:12it looks like
23:12John is looking
23:13to you know
23:14figure out
23:14his next move
23:15you know
23:16we've all been
23:16in that position
23:17where we're not
23:18ready to uh
23:18to shut it down
23:19for the night
23:21his friends gave out
23:22but he kept on
23:23going
23:25and was not
23:26ready to go home
23:27he's trying to figure
23:29out what his next
23:30plan's gonna be
23:31and then all of a
23:32sudden you see
23:33these two guys
23:33approach out of
23:34nowhere
23:35and John
23:36walk off with them
23:37and the first thing
23:39that went through
23:39my head was
23:40you know
23:40how does he know
23:41these guys
23:42what's the connection
23:43you know
23:44why them
23:45why him
23:46you know
23:47it's a big question
23:48as to how
23:49they uh
23:50they connected
23:53there's video
23:53of John
23:54and the men
23:55and you know
23:56we don't know
23:57the conversations
23:58that were had
23:59between John
24:00and these people
24:01but I'm sure
24:01it went something
24:02like
24:03hey let's hang out
24:11you know
24:12New Yorkers
24:13and people
24:14from DC
24:14like
24:15it's not uncommon
24:16to meet
24:16strangers
24:17at a bar
24:18get along
24:19with them
24:20and then decide
24:21hey
24:21you tell your friends
24:22I'm gonna hang out
24:23with these people
24:25he ends up
24:27in their car
24:28and there's video
24:30of them
24:31through
24:32credit card
24:33transactions
24:34going to a liquor
24:35store downtown
24:36and then eventually
24:37showing back up
24:38on 61st Street
24:40by John's townhouse
24:43to get from
24:44Hell's Kitchen
24:45to the Upper East Side
24:46takes about 10 minutes
24:47especially at that time
24:48of the morning
24:50the police
24:51go back to the footage
24:52and they see
24:52this red Durango
24:53come up
24:54and they see
24:54the men get out
24:55of the car
24:55and they see John
24:58they're all getting
24:59out together
24:59and you watch the video
25:01and you know
25:03John doesn't appear
25:04to be under any duress
25:06he looks like
25:06he's doing this
25:07all under his own volition
25:10and then that's
25:11the last time
25:11you see John
25:12alive
25:13is when he walks
25:14into his building
25:15with these two
25:19about 45 minutes later
25:21we see
25:22the surveillance video
25:23shows them
25:24leaving the building
25:25without John
25:33these men
25:34basically drain
25:35Umberger's accounts
25:39they take $20,000
25:41out of his accounts
25:42they go on
25:43massive spending sprees
25:44they max out his card
25:46they know
25:47that the clock
25:48is ticking
25:49that these
25:51credit card companies
25:52and the banks
25:52you've got to
25:53make these purchases
25:55quickly
25:58While police
25:59mobilized
26:00to track down
26:01the unidentified men
26:02John's mother
26:03Linda
26:04has made
26:05a chilling connection
26:08about a month
26:10before
26:10John Umberger died
26:12there was a 25-year-old
26:14social worker
26:14named Julio Ramirez
26:16who had died
26:18under eerily similar
26:19circumstances
26:20Julio Ramirez
26:23was a beautiful
26:24young man
26:25of El Salvadorian
26:27descent
26:28Julio received
26:30two master's degrees
26:33he was a professional
26:35committed to helping
26:36other people
26:37in the medical field
26:38and was very successful
26:40at his job
26:43and at that point
26:45police thought
26:46Julio Ramirez
26:47had just overdosed
26:50Julio was a young guy
26:52he was right out of college
26:53he got a job
26:54in the city
26:56he had his whole life
26:57in front of him
26:59he came from a family
27:01that loved him
27:01very much
27:04he grew up
27:04on Long Island
27:05not too far
27:06from where I grew up
27:09Julio Ramirez
27:10is at a nightclub
27:11a gay nightclub
27:13in New York City
27:14in April
27:15just a few weeks
27:16before this
27:16and three men
27:18were there
27:19waiting outside
27:20for him
27:22he had gotten
27:23in the cab
27:23with three other
27:24three other guys
27:25and at some point
27:28right after they got in
27:29they must have realized
27:30he lost consciousness
27:32and wasn't getting up
27:34Julio had nothing on him
27:35he had no phone
27:36he had no wallet
27:37so when the original case
27:39was taken
27:40he was labeled
27:41as a John Doe
27:46but the similarities
27:47between Julio
27:49and John's last night out
27:50cannot be ignored
27:51this was not just
27:53peg pocketing
27:54this was a system
27:55of targeting
27:58it's the same thing
27:59with John
28:00you know
28:00it shows these guys
28:01somehow
28:02gaining the trust
28:04of Julio
28:05and they engage
28:06in conversation
28:07to the point where
28:09he
28:10is
28:11at a level
28:12of comfort
28:13with them
28:13that allowed them
28:14to give him
28:15a dose of whatever
28:17their concoction
28:18was that night
28:18that ultimately
28:19led to Julio's death
28:23there was a lot
28:24more pressure
28:24because now
28:25I had two cases
28:27where these same people
28:28had done the same thing
28:29so now it was more
28:30pressure on
28:30to try to
28:31to try to figure out
28:32who these guys are
28:33and how it happened
28:34before they did it
28:34to somebody else
28:38a break in the
28:39Unbecker case
28:40comes when
28:40video enhancement
28:41delivers a clear view
28:42of the red
28:43Durango's license plate
28:45so the car
28:46came into play
28:47because we figured out
28:48it was a rental car
28:50we were able to get
28:51the rental car information
28:52the records
28:53from the rental car company
28:55who ended up
28:56leading us to
28:57Robert De Mayo
28:58who was the
28:59rentee
29:00of the car
29:02when he rented
29:04the car
29:04Mr. De Mayo
29:05was wearing
29:06the same shirt
29:08he was wearing
29:08when he was
29:10with John
29:13while in custody
29:14on an unrelated case
29:16Detective Rose
29:17questions
29:1833 year old
29:19Robert De Mayo
29:20about John's
29:21last night out
29:22he said he was
29:24out the night
29:24that John died
29:25he admitted
29:25to being with him
29:27but then he told me
29:28that when he left
29:29John
29:29that John
29:30was alive
29:31and well
29:31and actually said
29:32goodbye to them
29:33when they left
29:36I found it hard
29:37to believe
29:37that John
29:38would have been alive
29:39and conscious
29:40when they left
29:43after that interview
29:44we had gotten
29:45Robert De Mayo's phone
29:46and
29:47there was
29:49video footage
29:50on De Mayo's phone
29:53showing the inside
29:55of the apartment
29:55the night that John
29:57died
29:58and he basically
29:59documented
30:00the
30:01the whole scene
30:03John was on the bed
30:05unconscious
30:05in the same
30:06exact position
30:07that he was found
30:09in when
30:09the uniformed cops
30:11found and deceased
30:2510 months
30:26after John
30:26Umberger's murder
30:27the medical examiner
30:28releases a statement
30:29concerning his cause
30:31of death
30:34toxicologies
30:35take a frustratingly
30:36long time
30:37to come back
30:37the amount of time
30:39that it takes
30:39for a full toxicology
30:40to come back
30:41is
30:42you know
30:42months
30:43they were able
30:44to determine
30:45that it wasn't
30:46medical grade fentanyl
30:47but they were using
30:48a combination
30:48of
30:50cocaine
30:50fentanyl
30:51and lidocaine
30:53it was
30:54that
30:54and the combination
30:55of the lidocaine
30:56was able to
30:57slow these guys
30:58systems down
31:00so much
31:01that it basically
31:01just shut their bodies
31:02down
31:03stopped them
31:04from breathing
31:06and that led
31:07the medical examiner
31:08to believe
31:08that he was
31:10given these drugs
31:11John was given
31:12these drugs
31:12surreptitiously
31:13that he didn't know
31:14essentially
31:14his drink
31:15was spiked
31:17and so they go back
31:19and they get
31:19the toxicology
31:20from Julio Ramirez
31:24and lo and behold
31:25it's almost
31:26the exact
31:28same
31:29drug profile
31:30that was in
31:31John's system
31:34and it was
31:35the consistent
31:36combination
31:37of the fentanyl
31:38the lidocaine
31:38several other things
31:39that matched
31:40one another
31:46police arrest
31:48Robert Di Maio
31:49for the murder
31:49of John Umberger
31:52his phone
31:53gives a chilling
31:54insight
31:54into what really
31:55happened
31:56inside the
31:57Upper East Side
31:57townhouse
32:00they gave a
32:00tour of the
32:01apartment
32:01like it was
32:02an episode
32:03of MTV
32:03Cribs
32:05and at that
32:06point I realized
32:06that they really
32:07had no
32:09care in the
32:10world about
32:11what they did
32:11to anybody
32:11so they were
32:12just going to
32:12keep going
32:13because they
32:13saw nothing
32:13wrong with
32:14what they did
32:14through Di Maio's
32:15phone extraction
32:16police also
32:17identify and
32:18arrest the
32:19other man
32:19with him
32:20the night
32:20of John's
32:21death
32:22Jaquan
32:22Hamilton
32:23as well as
32:24another man
32:24wanted in
32:25connection
32:25with the
32:25death
32:26of Julio
32:26Ramirez
32:27Jacob
32:27Barroso
32:28they're not
32:29low-level
32:30criminals
32:30they are
32:31stealing
32:32tens of
32:33thousands
32:33of dollars
32:34from people
32:34and putting
32:36their lives
32:37in jeopardy
32:38and they
32:38did not
32:39care
32:39one
32:39iota
32:40about it
32:41their goal
32:42was to get
32:42as much
32:43money
32:43as quickly
32:44as possible
32:45right before
32:45the banks
32:46and the credit
32:47card companies
32:47could notice
32:49the connection
32:50was made
32:51when I started
32:52looking into
32:52the phone numbers
32:53in John's case
32:54where the money
32:55was going
32:57once I realized
32:58the phone numbers
32:59and I started
33:00messing around
33:00with that
33:01in my office
33:02to see
33:03if that phone
33:05number had come
33:05up in any
33:06other cases
33:06that's when I
33:08was alerted
33:08to the fact
33:09that this
33:09number
33:09was also
33:10in common
33:11with Julio's
33:12case
33:12and that's
33:13when the
33:13connection
33:13between the
33:13two was
33:14made
33:16I first
33:17connected
33:18with Julio's
33:20brother Carlos
33:21and then
33:23his precious
33:23mother and
33:24father
33:25they are great
33:26people who
33:27tragically lost
33:28their son
33:29and their brother
33:30just like
33:32my children
33:33and I did
33:33and all of
33:34John's friends
33:42with the
33:43suspects
33:43in custody
33:44police
33:44return to
33:45the security
33:45footage
33:46outside of
33:47the queue
33:47club
33:47and witness
33:48a plot
33:49set in
33:50motion
33:50hours
33:51before
33:51John's
33:52death
33:55especially
33:56when you're
33:56privy to
33:57the video
33:57of them
33:58prior to
33:59seeing
33:59John
33:59outside
34:00the club
34:00they're
34:01very
34:02obviously
34:02out front
34:03casing
34:04this place
34:04and trying
34:06to do
34:06their
34:08reconnaissance
34:08to figure
34:09out who
34:10they're
34:10going to
34:10target
34:11it becomes
34:12obvious
34:12once you
34:13look at
34:13it in
34:14hindsight
34:16the three
34:17of them
34:17have developed
34:18this scheme
34:19where they
34:20go around
34:20targeting
34:21party goers
34:22throughout
34:22the city
34:23and they
34:24wait
34:24and they
34:25see as
34:25people stumble
34:26out of
34:26bars
34:27and they
34:27prey upon
34:28them
34:28they would
34:29go up
34:29to them
34:29they would
34:30offer
34:30them
34:30drugs
34:31these
34:31drugs
34:31would
34:31be
34:31laced
34:32with
34:32different
34:32chemicals
34:33fentanyl
34:34cocaine
34:34they would
34:36use
34:36people's
34:37fingers
34:38while they're
34:39incapacitated
34:39to get
34:40into their
34:40phones
34:40their faces
34:41to get
34:42into
34:42bank
34:43accounts
34:43and all
34:44banking
34:44information
34:48these criminals
34:49are not
34:49chemists
34:50these are
34:50not drugs
34:51manufactured
34:51by pharmaceutical
34:52companies
34:53there are
34:53no
34:55rules
34:56they are
34:57mixing
34:57their own
34:58drugs
34:59you have
35:00no idea
35:00what's
35:01in it
35:01they don't
35:02care
35:05you're just
35:06a means
35:06to an end
35:07for them
35:10police believe
35:11their strategy
35:12was in play
35:13months before
35:14they crossed
35:14paths
35:15with John
35:16and Julio
35:19they're
35:20suspected
35:21of at least
35:2117
35:21victims
35:22and then
35:24that having
35:24absolutely no
35:25impact
35:25on future
35:26behavior
35:26there is a lot
35:28of fentanyl
35:28flowing into
35:29New York City
35:30at this time
35:31and still
35:32now
35:32and so police
35:33are getting
35:33overdose reports
35:34all the time
35:35this becomes
35:36a regular thing
35:36this overdose
35:37that overdose
35:38so it's very
35:39easy for police
35:40to not put
35:42the dots
35:42together
35:44one of the
35:45things that
35:45does play
35:46into here
35:47perhaps
35:47is we
35:48might believe
35:49as a criminal
35:50gang enterprise
35:51that perhaps
35:52a gay person
35:54reporting this
35:55crime
35:55to law
35:57enforcement
35:58might not be
35:59taken quite as
36:00seriously
36:00might not be
36:01investigated as
36:01much
36:03how little
36:04the gang
36:04valued life
36:05leaves
36:06John's
36:06family and
36:07friends
36:07sickened
36:10I unintentionally
36:11did see
36:13the footage
36:14and
36:18it was just
36:19nightmarish
36:23I just don't
36:24think
36:26anyone like
36:27you or I
36:27could even
36:27comprehend
36:28the inhumanity
36:30and the
36:31callousness
36:31that it takes
36:32to celebrate
36:34over someone's
36:35dead body
36:40nobody
36:41deserves this
36:41John did
36:42not deserve
36:42that
36:43to die
36:44alone
36:45and afraid
36:46is just
36:48a fate
36:48that I
36:49would have
36:49never
36:50imagined
36:51for him
36:51let alone
36:51somebody that
36:52I loved
36:52as much
36:53as him
36:54and
36:55for what
36:57for a
36:58few thousand
36:58dollars
37:01these men
37:03traded
37:04John's
37:04life
37:06for
37:10ten
37:11issues
37:12the legal
37:13term
37:13is depraved
37:14indifference
37:15that's
37:16a term
37:17detectives
37:18Rose and
37:18Argyro
37:19said applied
37:20in this
37:20case
37:24they
37:24took these
37:25people's lives
37:26without a care
37:27in the world
37:27I mean
37:28they didn't care
37:29what they were
37:29giving them
37:29they didn't care
37:30they wanted
37:31them incapacitated
37:32so that they
37:33could take
37:33all that stuff
37:34because these
37:34people didn't
37:35want to
37:36get a job
37:37learn a trade
37:38make a living
37:39everything that
37:40everybody that
37:41assimilates into
37:42normal society
37:43tries to do to
37:45succeed
37:45these guys just
37:46took the easy
37:47way out
37:48he was a means
37:49to an end
37:50for these people
37:52and I don't think
37:53that they saw
37:54him
37:55as a human
37:56at all
37:59which is heartbreaking
38:00because John
38:02only saw them
38:03as humans
38:06you're going out
38:07you know
38:08nobody deserves
38:09to be
38:09preyed upon
38:10like that
38:11you know
38:12and you want
38:13to try to give
38:13everybody the
38:14benefit of the doubt
38:17but like I've
38:18said before
38:18you know
38:19there are
38:20bad people
38:23and there is
38:24evil
38:31in January
38:322025
38:33prosecutors
38:34pushed for the
38:35maximum punishment
38:36for the murders of
38:37John Umberger
38:38and Julio Ramirez
38:40as well as
38:41charges of
38:42burglary and
38:42robbery
38:43against three
38:44other men
38:44under New York
38:47state law
38:47if someone
38:48causes the
38:49death of
38:50someone
38:50during the
38:50course of
38:51a burglary
38:52or a robbery
38:53that automatically
38:54falls under
38:55a second degree
38:56felony murder
38:58charge
38:59even if they
39:00did not have
39:01the intent
39:01to kill
39:03the person
39:03we don't know
39:05if Hamilton
39:06DeMeo
39:07and Barroso
39:07wanted to
39:09kill
39:10these victims
39:11but it doesn't
39:12matter
39:13under the New York
39:14state code
39:14if they were
39:15doing this
39:16and harming
39:17someone
39:18and drugging
39:19them
39:19in the
39:19course of
39:20committing
39:21a robbery
39:22or a burglary
39:23that automatically
39:24becomes a
39:25homicide charge
39:28nearly three
39:29years after
39:30John and Julio
39:30were killed
39:31the jury
39:32delivers its
39:33verdict
39:33DeMeo
39:34and Hamilton
39:35are found
39:35guilty of
39:36John's murder
39:37together with
39:38Barroso
39:38all three
39:39are found
39:40guilty of
39:41killing
39:41Julio Ramirez
39:42Barroso
39:43is sentenced
39:44to 20
39:45years to
39:45life
39:46while DeMeo
39:47and Hamilton
39:47will serve
39:4840 years
39:49to life
39:51I wish
39:52it would
39:53have been
39:53for life
39:55but as
39:56of now
39:57Mr. DeMeo
39:58and Mr.
39:58Hamilton
39:59are not
39:59eligible
40:00for parole
40:01until
40:032063
40:06people need
40:07to know
40:08how
40:08concerning
40:09this is
40:10like
40:11there was
40:11a time
40:12where everyone
40:13could be
40:14young
40:14and enjoy
40:15a night
40:15out
40:15and you
40:16just have
40:16to be
40:16so careful
40:17now
40:18you can't
40:19bomb a cigarette
40:20from a stranger
40:21on the street
40:21because it could be
40:22laced with
40:23fentanyl
40:23you can't
40:24go out
40:24alone
40:25this isn't
40:26a time
40:27to go out
40:28alone
40:29whether you
40:30should be able
40:31to do these
40:31things or not
40:32is kind of
40:33not up for
40:33discussion
40:34anymore
40:34people need
40:36to
40:37be careful
40:39I've gotten
40:40to know
40:41John's family
40:42very well
40:42over the last
40:43few years
40:43and you know
40:45I said to her
40:46and I say
40:47to everybody
40:47I'm very
40:48grateful
40:49for her
40:50tenacity
40:51and her
40:52cooperation
40:52and also
40:53her patience
40:54and trust
40:55in me
40:55I appreciate
40:56the cooperation
40:58on her end
40:59and her
41:00willingness
41:02to be open
41:02with me
41:03and forthcoming
41:04with all the
41:05information
41:07the world
41:08got noticeably
41:09dimmer
41:10when John
41:10Umberger
41:11left this
41:11side of earth
41:14he left
41:15a massive
41:16hole
41:16in my heart
41:17I
41:18I mean
41:20not a day
41:21goes by
41:22that I don't
41:22think about
41:24him
41:25and
41:27everything
41:28in my life
41:28reminds me
41:29of him
41:29because
41:30he helped
41:31build the life
41:32that I live
41:32today
41:35John died
41:36most likely
41:38afraid
41:39definitely
41:39alone
41:42and how
41:43unfitting
41:44that was
41:46for someone
41:48as larger
41:49than life
41:50as he was
41:54mom and
41:54John
41:55were best
41:55friends
41:56she had
41:57lost
41:57not only
41:58her son
41:58and her
41:59firstborn
41:59but she
42:00had also
42:00lost her
42:00best friend
42:01that weekend
42:03I can't
42:04even begin
42:05to imagine
42:06that
42:07that experience
42:08or walking
42:09through that
42:09experience
42:10happy mother's
42:11day
42:12first of all
42:13to my
42:13wonderful
42:14mom
42:14Linda
42:15who can
42:16do anything
42:16she
42:16puts her
42:17mind
42:17to
42:20if I
42:21had not
42:21done
42:21what I
42:22did
42:22John
42:23would be
42:24haunting
42:24me
42:25to this
42:25day
42:27because
42:27mark
42:28my word
42:28John
42:29would have
42:29done
42:30this
42:30for
42:30all
42:31of us
42:31as his
42:32family
42:32and his
42:33friends
42:33John
42:34was the
42:35show-up
42:35guy
42:35again
42:36as I've
42:37pointed out
42:37to make
42:38the impossible
42:38happen
42:39and he
42:39would have
42:40made sure
42:40that people
42:41were held
42:42accountable
42:42and to get
42:43to the
42:44bottom
42:44of what
42:44happened
42:52what's
42:53your message
42:54to John
