In 2011, two teams of astronomers made an astounding discovery around a quasar called APM 08279+5255, located more than twelve billion light years away from Earth. A quasar is an exceptionally bright and active region powered by a massive black hole feeding on surrounding gas. What stunned researchers was the immense vapor cloud encircling this central engine.

The cloud contains pure water vapor measuring at least one hundred and forty trillion times the total volume of all oceans on Earth combined. This makes it the largest and farthest reservoir of water ever detected in the entire universe. The gas is unusually warm and dense compared to typical cosmic clouds, spread out over hundreds of light years of space.

Because this quasar is so distant, astronomers are observing the system as it existed when the universe was only 1.6 billion years old. This proved that water existed in gigantic quantities much earlier in cosmic history than scientists had previously imagined.
