Long before modern American cities existed, Cahokia rose near the Mississippi River as one of the largest and most advanced urban centers in pre-Columbian North America.

At its height, thousands of people lived around massive earthen mounds, public plazas, farming areas, workshops, and trade routes connecting distant communities. The largest structure, Monks Mound, still stands today as evidence of the scale and organization of Cahokian society.

After the 1200s, the city began to decline. Flooding, environmental stress, social change, and other pressures may have contributed, but historians still debate the exact reasons Cahokia was eventually abandoned.

Centuries later, European settlers encountered the enormous mounds without fully understanding the civilization that built them. Cahokia’s story challenges the idea that large, sophisticated cities did not exist in North America before European colonization.

This is the story of Cahokia — America’s Forgotten City.
