00:00Expelliarmus!
00:03Wingardium Leviosa!
00:07Sabra Kadabra!
00:11Turficus Testroicus!
00:17There, I just destroyed evil once and for all. You're welcome.
00:31Well, folks, we finally made it to the end of Dances with Disaster Month.
00:37And I think I saved the best episode for last.
00:41Because not only is this episode maybe one of the most important to Disney, but maybe to animation in general.
00:50But maybe that's just me. Maybe there's other people out there who have differing opinions.
00:56Hey, everyone has a different opinion.
01:00So anyway, let's talk about the Owl House.
01:03Created by Dana Terrace, a storyboard artist behind such works as Gravity Falls and Duck Tales,
01:09the Owl House centers around an eccentric teenage girl named Luz Nosita, who loves everything witchcraft.
01:15When she comes across an abandoned house, she enters a door and finds herself in the magical land of the
01:21Boiling Isles,
01:22inhabited by witches, monsters, and other unnameable creatures.
01:26There, she befriends Eda the Owl Lady, voiced by Wendy Malick, a rogue witch who loves pawning off muggle goods
01:34and hiding out from the Emperor's coven in the titular Owl House.
01:38Welcome to the Owl House.
01:49She's nicknamed the Owl Lady due to the curse that was put on her as a child.
01:54That causes her to turn into an owl beast if she isn't given her elixir.
01:58She shares this casa with her roommate King, voiced by Alex Hirsch.
02:03Imagine Bill Cipher if he was a small, cute, furry demon dog in a skull mask.
02:09Who dares intrude upon I?
02:11The King of Demons!
02:16Hirsch also provides the voice of Hootie, this owl tube thing that appears on the door.
02:22He's basically the...face of the house.
02:26Hoot Hoot!
02:26I don't need a babysitter!
02:28I'm a big boy house!
02:30It's your faithful pal Hootie, report for duty!
02:32Up at dawn, taking orders all day long!
02:34Yeah, remember that creepy Thomas animation where his face crawls out of his smoke box and turns into this weird
02:41crawling entity?
02:43Yeah, imagine that, but even more creepy.
02:47If you could imagine that.
02:48Even to this day, I am still fascinated and slightly disturbed by his existence.
02:54I will be haunted by my actions forever!
02:57Hoot Hoot!
02:58The show covers Luz and Ida's various adventures across the Boiling Isles,
03:02with Ida teaching Luz how to become a full-fledged witch,
03:05teaching her new spells,
03:07and fending off against multiple dangers like demons and monsters
03:11and the evil Emperor Belos,
03:14as well as his minions,
03:16all while trying to learn magic at Hexside School.
03:19Much to Ida's disappointment.
03:21No!
03:23Why?
03:24School!
03:26Well, seeing as Nevermore Academy is miles away from here,
03:30and J.K. Rowling decided to destroy her reputation by being a hateful transphobe,
03:35the Boiling Isles is the best option for witchcraft at this point, right?
03:39The Sanderson sisters?
03:41Pah!
03:42That's so 1693.
03:44The Owl House aired on the Disney Channel from 2020 to 2023,
03:48and lasted three seasons.
03:50Well, technically two and a half.
03:53Disney ended up pulling the plug on the show,
03:56reducing season three to only three extended episodes.
03:59According to Dana Terrace,
04:01the Disney producers thought her show didn't match the brand.
04:05Yeah, sorry, Miss Terrace,
04:07we had to make room for all our other programming.
04:09You know, like Haley's Onnit,
04:12which we cancelled after one season.
04:15Stugo,
04:16which we also cancelled after one season.
04:19That lame Casagrande's knockoff?
04:21Nope, cancelled that too.
04:23But don't worry,
04:24at least we have Zombie School Musical,
04:27and Power Rangers with Diaturfer,
04:30and Disney's House of Chibis.
04:33It's the closest we're going to get to Owlphibia, I guess.
04:36You know, say what you want about the Disney Channel.
04:39At least they try to have variety with their programming.
04:42It's more than I can say about Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network these days,
04:46but my God, they treat their creators like trash.
04:50Yeah, we can't continue all these shows,
04:52but we can push slop like Ozzy Fox.
04:57How dare you besmirch the good name of the Prince of Darkness
05:00and put it on horror like this.
05:03Now fuck off, guy.
05:06Gus, Jim, Bill, whatever your fucking name is.
05:09Your name's going to be dead if you chose his chicken.
05:11But enough crying about that stupid mouse.
05:14We've got dancing to get to.
05:16So, let's finish off Dancing with Disaster Month
05:20with a review of Enchanting Grom Fright.
05:24Roll the footage!
05:25So this is episode 16 of season 1,
05:28and by now, Luz is starting to get a hang of this magic biz
05:32by drawing symbols on pieces of paper called glyphs.
05:36Meanwhile, King has got a hold of Luz's phone
05:38and is entertaining himself by...
05:41watching cat videos on the phone.
05:43I regret teaching you about the internet.
05:45Ha! What possible regrets could come from the internet?
05:48Well, take it from a guy who's had his own bad experiences
05:52from the internet,
05:54stay away from the commentary community,
05:58stay away from the art community,
06:02and just stay away from social media in general.
06:04So Luz is still able to get a solid Wi-Fi connection
06:07next to the door,
06:08but she still hasn't spilled the beans to her mother Camilla
06:12that she's in the demon realm
06:13and not at camp like she was originally intended to go.
06:17She. Will. End. Me.
06:19Nah, she'd be freaked out by our world anyway.
06:21So actually, by keeping the truth from her,
06:23you're doing her a favor.
06:25Interesting strategy, King.
06:26You better hope Camilla doesn't have Life360 on her phone.
06:30So Luz goes with her new friends Gus and Willow
06:32to Hexside School,
06:33where they're preparing for the annual Grom social event.
06:37You guys have a weird version of prom on the Boiling Isles?
06:40I was kicked out of my last school dance
06:41for dressing like an otter,
06:42but maybe here I could be your Grom queen.
06:45Funny.
06:46I got kicked out of my dance for wearing a Giants jersey.
06:50Apparently the school principal was a big Jets fan.
06:53Speaking of things that are green and angry,
06:55Luz has a run-in with her arch-rival Amity Blythe,
06:58voiced by Mae Whitman.
06:59Oh no, not her.
07:02Anybody but her.
07:04Remember that time she stomped on King's Cupcake?
07:07Or when she nearly got Luz bisected
07:09when she was pretending to be an abomination?
07:12Mean.
07:13Like, why is Amity so obsessed with Luz anyway?
07:17It almost makes you think she's in love with her or something.
07:20Ha!
07:21We all know that's not true.
07:23Hey, I was trying to save you.
07:25Well, it doesn't matter.
07:26We're going to be stuck together forever.
07:28She can be so stupid, which I love.
07:30I mean hate.
07:31In any case, she needs you right now, which is sweet.
07:34I mean, I hate it, and it's dumb.
07:36Yeah, I don't see anything amiss here.
07:39Amity just has never seen a human being before.
07:42She's just being a panic.
07:44Look at the adjective.
07:46Panic.
07:46Okay, real talk.
07:48At this point, the angry tomato has softened up to Luz
07:52and has joined her on several adventures at this point.
07:55Going inside Willow's mind, lying snowblind in the sun,
08:00and venturing through the dangerous restricted sections of the library.
08:04And honestly, Amity's not really a bully.
08:07She's just somebody whose parents spoiled her rotten often.
08:11And she asks herself, what did she do to get as far as she's gotten?
08:15A pretty girl walks by her locker.
08:18Her heart gives a flutter, but she don't dare utter a word.
08:22Because that would be absurd behavior for Little Miss Angry Tomato.
08:27What?
08:27I'm only describing what's happening in the episode.
08:31I also may have inadvertently been describing it in some of my other videos.
08:36I don't know.
08:37Can somebody do a compilation of that?
08:40I'll pay you ten bucks.
08:41So Principal Bumpity Bump announces over the intercom
08:45that Amity is the one chosen to be this year's Grom Queen.
08:49Yep, they announce the winner right before the Grom rather than after.
08:53You see, Grom is much different than your ordinary prom.
08:57Each year, a shape-shifting entity called the Grometheus emerges from the depths of the school,
09:03and takes the shape of whatever a witch fears the most.
09:06It is the job of the Grom Queen to fight and defeat the Grometheus
09:11and send it back to confinement before it invades the town.
09:14So basically, it's like the Yule Ball if the Boggart was the main star.
09:20Sheesh.
09:20You know, these magic schools, they don't give a single solitary shit
09:25about the well-being of their students, do they?
09:27You think I'm joking?
09:29Ha!
09:29You should see this place as detention centers.
09:32So we get to see the crew setting up Grom in the school auditorium,
09:35complete with the Sarlacc pit in the middle,
09:38and some weapons to fight it.
09:40Medieval torture seems like a strange theme for Grom, but hey!
09:43Yeah, what rubbish is this?
09:45What do you need all these weapons for?
09:46Wouldn't it be easier to just cast magic at this thing?
09:50Is there no ridiculous spell to defeat it?
09:53Meanwhile, Amity is not happy to be Grom Queen, and who can blame her?
09:58Having to face off against your biggest fear in front of the whole school is terrifying,
10:04and in Amity's case, embarrassing.
10:06But Luce does have an idea of possibly taking Amity's place.
10:11She enlists the help of Eda, who's going to be the chaperone,
10:14while King will be providing commentary of the fight alongside Gus.
10:18Facing Grom means facing your worst fear, King,
10:21and I don't think Luce knows what that means yet.
10:23Do you think I could pull off red eyeshadow?
10:26Girl, you can pull off anything!
10:28I mean, is King wrong?
10:30Eda is such a queen, she could make any drip work.
10:33See this tuxedo she has on right now?
10:36Money.
10:36You know, if Disney actually bothered to release merchandise of this show,
10:40I guarantee Eda would be making a killing.
10:43She would have a whole swimming pool full of apple blood right now.
10:48Barbie who?
10:49There's levels to me, kid. Levels, I say!
10:52But Eda thinks Luce is too fragile to be Grom Queen, because she's a human.
10:57Well, excuse me, Mom!
10:59Luce stomps out into the woods, where she runs right into Amity.
11:03Oh my gosh, Amity! I'm so sorry!
11:06I'm here, I thought this date...
11:07Yeah, sorry, I have to pause the footage.
11:11You know, copyright and all.
11:13But hey, let's take a look at this screenshot, shall we?
11:16Let's, um, let's get an examination.
11:19Let's see, holding hands, looking into each other's eyes,
11:24Luce's light glyph is hovering over them.
11:27You know, Luce is technically Spanish for light.
11:31Right. And Amity means friendly relations, also relating to love.
11:37Could Dana Terrace be cooking something here?
11:40Like some kind of unity?
11:45Or perhaps...
11:46Lumity?
11:47So Luce and Amity go back to the Owl House to find an outfit to wear to Grom.
11:51Which leads us to quite possibly the second greatest Luce line of all time behind
11:57Now eat this, sucka.
11:59This one says witch with a dark side.
12:01But this one says I'm an otter.
12:03With a dark side.
12:05Oh, Luce.
12:07Your neurodivergent nerdiness can be so endearing sometimes.
12:11Luce, you need to take this seriously.
12:13If you can't defeat Grom, everyone on the island will have to live out their worst nightmare.
12:16You wanna hear MY WORST NIGHTMARE?!
12:20You wanna hear MY WORST NIGHTMARE?!
12:20You wanna hear MY WORST NIGHTMARE?!
12:20Stop it, Izzy, Izzy, what are you?!
12:22Well, that's one evil creature defeated.
12:25I think you're ready to take on Congress, Amity.
12:28So Amity and her siblings, Edric and Emera, run Luce through some tests to see what her biggest fear might
12:33be.
12:34Ah! Jerks online who want to debate!
12:37Luce, help me help!
12:39Human Souls trapped in cat bodies!
12:40Speaking as someone who's had encounters with internet chuds, you may as well be debating a brick wall.
12:46Your best thing to do?
12:48Click that block button.
12:52The end.
12:57What have you done, Edric?
12:59That's not a fear.
13:00All you did was take Ida and make her...
13:03even more okay hear me out.
13:06Is that supposed to be me?
13:09Dang, I look great.
13:11Tch! See? Even Ida herself gets it.
13:14No wonder she married Grunkle Stan in Vegas.
13:17Meow.
13:19Alright, enough simping respectfully, we got a Grom to get to.
13:23We got our self-taught band, and our disco snaggleback voiced by a game grump.
13:28We also have Amity in her pink and black dress, while Luce is wearing a combination tuxedo and tutu.
13:35Which she got from the combination thrift shop and the grocery store.
13:39Now before you play any MST3K clips, this outfit is actually important to Luce's character.
13:46Like I said before, one of Luce Nosita's biggest character traits is that she's neurodivergent.
13:51A lot of what she does is based on Dana Terrace's own experiences during her childhood.
13:56She thinks and acts differently than what many consider normal.
14:00Whether it be having strange interests, behaviors, and actions around her peers.
14:05I remember back in the early 2000's when everyone was making fun of people online for being cringy or weird
14:12or whatever.
14:13I know this because I was one of those people as well.
14:18And looking back on it, who cares?
14:22Who cares if someone is acting a little bit weird?
14:25I mean, you look back at all those YouTubers like Sushi654 or those AVGN clones.
14:31Those were just some guys who wanted to get in on something that was popular at the time.
14:37None of them did anything wrong.
14:39Well, except for the game dude, but that's another story.
14:44Just because someone has certain hobbies or interests or different behaviors doesn't mean they should be ostracized for it.
14:51They're not hurting people and they're not being predators.
14:55They're just enjoying what makes them happy.
14:57Especially these days when it just feels like we're just waiting for the end of the world.
15:02I've had a lot of people asking me,
15:04Brandon, why do you watch cartoons?
15:06Why don't you watch the news and learn what's going on in the world?
15:10Well, first off, cartoons are more entertaining.
15:13Secondly, have you seen the news today?
15:17Oh boy.
15:17Yeah, Fox News bitching about woke culture and how Antifa is destroying this country.
15:24Because being against fascism is bad now, apparently.
15:28Haven't we been fighting fascism for like a hundred years now?
15:31Seriously, that interview they did with their leader?
15:34It was just Michael Rapoport in disguise.
15:37This isn't a news show.
15:38It's a network for whistleblowers.
15:41Like, why is something being considered woke a bad thing?
15:44What even is woke? Something that doesn't adhere to lonely computer thumpers with no social lives?
15:51The hell with that.
15:53Get woke and stay woke, my friends.
15:55There's nothing wrong with being a bit weird sometimes.
15:58It's just like Ida says.
16:00Us weirdos have to stick together.
16:02Like, if Luce just turns the handle, is she asking for a scandal?
16:06Or should she try to be ordinary?
16:10Anyway, I promised you guys an MST3K clip.
16:16Um, let's try this one.
16:19I'm the government, I'm the government, I'm the reason nothing works.
16:24So right on cue, Gus unleashes the Grom.
16:28And Luce, armed with Morningstar and Magiklyths,
16:31is ready to fight the shape-shifting glob monster from Jumpstart First Grade.
16:35You're not coming from a place of intellectual honesty, so debating you would be pointless!
16:41See? That is how you deal with internet chuds.
16:45Suffa quartering! Suffa bish!
16:48But then the Grom transforms into Luce's mother, Camilla,
16:53and it's revealed that Luce's biggest fear is her mom finding out about her being on the Boiling Isles
16:59and not at camp like she told her.
17:01Luce becomes so overwhelmed that she runs out of the school with the Grommilla in hot pursuit.
17:07Boy, if only this school had some sort of security.
17:11We're Steve when you need him.
17:13So the Camilla Grom chases Luce to a cliff out in the woods.
17:16Why can't you face your own mother?
17:19Well, you don't exactly look like Stacy's mom right about now.
17:22You don't even look like Amity's mom.
17:25And have you seen Amity's mom?
17:27She...
17:28No, no.
17:29I don't care how dummy thick she is.
17:32She's still an evil bish.
17:33Eda and Amity arrive, and Amity tries to run interference,
17:37only for the Grom to grab her and rip up the purple paper she was bringing along with her.
17:42It's revealed that Amity's biggest fear was being rejected by the person she was going to ask to Grom.
17:48Luce then asks Amity if she wants to be her Grom partner.
17:51Meanwhile, the Grom is bearing down on them, slowly.
17:55Oh, so slowly.
17:57And then what happens is iconic.
18:03The Grom is dead.
18:04The Grom.
18:04The Grom is dead.
18:04The Grom.
18:07Oh.
18:28It's dead.
18:30accommodation, some magiclets, some dance moves, and an animation upgrade to finally defeat this thing.
18:37Flawless victory. And finally, to top this moment off, it soon revealed that the person that Amity
18:45wanted to ask to the dance was Hootie? Nah, I'm just kidding. It was Luce. Yep,
18:52Amity Blythe, who bullied and manipulated Luce this whole season,
18:58had a crush on her this whole time. And what does this lead to?
19:07Do I really have to do this? It's been, what, 16 years? I don't want to do this.
19:13You want me to do this? All right, fine. You asked for this.
19:24GAY! GAY!
19:30GAY!
19:32Ow! Ow! Ow!
19:35Yep, I threw out my leg. Ow.
19:39Save me, Jackson Dart!
19:41So yeah, this episode is a masterpiece. Everything about it is just glorious fun. All of our heroes
19:49that we've met so far are given something to do. There's a lot of funny moments, particularly from
19:54King and Luce, and it ends with a chaotic final act with an absolutely iconic dance scene. A dance
20:01episode with comedy, drama, and action? That's a hardcore hit if you ask me. If there is one negative,
20:09apparently the credits were supposed to have a snapshot of Luce dressed as an otter with a dark side,
20:14but they had to cut it out due to time constraints?
20:18BOO! Does somebody at Disney just hate otters or something? This was the episode that definitely
20:24paved new ground for the Disney animation renaissance. While there have been LGBT couples in cartoons
20:31before, Luna and Sam, Ruby and Sapphire, Bubblegum and Marceline, and yeah, let's face it, Kitty and
20:38Bunny were GFs, and there's no denying it. But this was Disney's first real mainstream same-sex
20:44relationship between two of their main characters. Most importantly, it grows into a healthy
20:50relationship. While quite a few pairings were more blink and you miss it, Lumity is a ship that
20:56continues to grow and develop as the show goes on. Amity starts out still in her kind of nervous
21:02gay panic self, but then she becomes Purple Amity and finally confesses her feelings to Luce.
21:08Thanks to Hootie, of course. They become girlfriends, they support each other throughout all the hardships
21:14throughout the show, and they make an absolute power couple by the series end.
21:19You see, Star Versus? You see? This is how you make a healthy relationship.
21:24Not throwing your partner's exes under the bus and destroying two separate worlds just to get these two
21:30together. That dating show episode of the Chibi-verse where it ends in a tie between Lumity and Starco?
21:36Ha! Starco only wishes it was on Lumity's level. Sadly, for a show that does break new ground,
21:43I'm pretty sure the Lumity couple is one of the main reasons why Disney pulled the plug in the end.
21:49Disney, who have given us sugar-coated slop like the Jonas Brothers in High School Musical,
21:55apparently thought the show was too gay. And instead of 20 episodes of Luce and her friends
22:00hanging out in the human world in Season 3, we only got three 45-minute extended specials that
22:07try to cover as much as they possibly can, and unfortunately, it still doesn't feel like enough.
22:12We just don't get enough moments with the cast in the human realm. The fight against Kikimora is brutally rushed,
22:19and most disappointingly, Amity never finds out that her G.F. got to be a Titan. I actually met
22:26Mae Whitman at New York Comic-Con a couple years ago, and one of the questions I asked her was,
22:31what do you think would happen if Amity found out that Luce was a Titan? She said that Amity's head
22:38would explode. Yeah, definitely sounds like Mittens. Thankfully, Dana Terrace is releasing a new Owl
22:47House novel this month, which is a sequel to the TV series. She also has a new cartoon called Knights
22:53of Guinevere, which has been greenlit for a full series, so there is a lot to look forward to. A
22:58definite
22:58hardcore hit for enchanting Grom Fright. And obviously, this whole episode does speak for myself, in a way.
23:06I have a confession to make. Here we go, everybody. Remember years ago, when I was always making gay jokes,
23:13and being a total edgelord and whatnot, and people called me out for it. Yeah. Well, turns out,
23:23I am bi-curious. Like, I don't consider myself completely bi, because I'm not really interested
23:30in relationships at the moment, but I just like attractive people. You know, I like good-looking
23:37people. I like beautiful girls, some dudes. I don't know. I'm thinking about it. I'm still curious.
23:48Like, I grew up in a very Christian family, and they're always saying that I should be fully 100%
23:55straight, and should have a wife and kids, and blah blah blah, and all that. Well, if I did have
24:01the money,
24:02I would be married with children, and then my life would really be over, and then I would be Al
24:08Bundy.
24:09But no. But yeah, I just wanted to get all that out of the way for you guys.
24:15So what was the point of this past month? To me, it was looking back on the good old days
24:20of friends
24:21hanging out, hitting up the dance floor, having a good time, and then wreaking havoc everywhere.
24:26You dance, dance, and then you're falling apart to halftime. But you don't care about saving the world.
24:33You just want to find that one little girl, and dance, dance, dance the night away. Do the twist,
24:39the stomp, the mashed potato, too. Any old thing that you want to do. Then just dance.
24:44So that was a pretty crazy month, but how do we top this off?
24:51Maybe a surprise cameo by a popular superheroine, perhaps?
24:56Hello, wonderful friend Brandon. It is I, Starfire, here to wish you the happiest day of the Valentine.
25:04And I would also like to say that I am wishing you a good luck at the Robot Wars,
25:11and that Matilda is for sure my favorite house robot. Oh, Hendon, Walsh, and I, she does my voice.
25:19We spent all day making you the most beautiful Valentine's card. And here it is. Let me get it.
25:26Oh, be right back. Okay.
25:31Ta-da! Happy Valentine's Day to the Brandon. Smiley face, smiley face, smiley face, smiley face.
25:40Hee hee hee hee. Bye.
25:43Aw, wasn't that adorable? I got a Valentine's card from Starfire.
25:49In a video I'm releasing in September. Thanks, Hendon.
25:56Well, I hope you guys enjoyed Dances with Disaster Month.
26:00Next month is Halloween, and I think you guys should all be prepared.
26:04Because all I have to say is, welcome to Fright Night.
