Even if you haven't been practicing all those techniques you learned at the arts and crafts table at camp, don't worry — we got you. Whether you call it a lanyard weave or an accordion braid, this technique gives you a truly stunning ribbon necklace. Check out how Jenni from I SPY DIY concocted a statement necklace, inspired by designer Jennifer Loiselle's beautiful pieces from her Tissage collection. Put all those plastic boondoggles you made back then to shame. Check out the video, above.

00:07Hi, this is Jenny from iSpyDIY. I'm here today with Refinery29. As we're gearing up for Fashion Week, everyone's looking
00:14for that statement piece. We saw this necklace at a previous Fashion Week and we're going to recreate it today.
00:20It's a new take on a friendship bracelet using ribbon. So let's get started.
00:24What you'll need for this project is a piece of felt, scissors, three colors of ribbon, jump ring, lobster clasp,
00:33rope caps, brush, needle and thread, rope, and glue.
00:39The first step is to create the base of the necklace and we're going to be using the box braid
00:44for this.
00:45And I'm going to be using shorter pieces of ribbon just to demonstrate it, but you're going to want to
00:50use at least three yards to create the entire base of the necklace.
00:55So first what you do is on your piece of felt, you're going to glue your ribbon facing opposite directions
01:04and this will create the base that you're going to be working off.
01:08And then on top of that we're going to layer our other two colors.
01:16Now to do your box braid, you're going to fold your black and white over and then with your red,
01:25take the red and weave it over the black and under the white.
01:32And then you're going to pull them tight to create your first box.
01:45And then you repeat that and continue doing these same steps until you create the base of the necklace, which
01:55should be about eight inches long.
01:59Once you're done with the box braid, it should look like this.
02:01If you want to make a smaller necklace, you can always use a half an inch ribbon.
02:06Here we use three-fourths of an inch.
02:08To end it, dab a little glue, fold each piece of ribbon over one time.
02:26Cut off your excess ribbon.
02:30The last step is to cut a felt square.
02:34Put glue on the backside and glue to the base.
02:41Then let dry.
02:46Next we're going to create the second part of the necklace using the rope.
02:51And cut a piece about six inches long.
02:58And then we're going to add the rope caps onto each side.
03:02You can always reinforce the end caps by putting a little bit of glue.
03:06Now you have your two pieces of rope with end caps.
03:10For your next step, you're going to sew the end cap to a piece of felt.
03:25After you've sewed it through a few times, double knot, cut, and do it to the other side.
03:33Next step is to glue your felt square to the base of your necklace.
03:40And we're going to do this on both sides.
03:47Once it's done drying, your final step is to add your findings.
03:52So connect your jump rings and your lobster clasp.
04:09And there you have it, your WOW Factor necklace, perfect for this year's Fashion Week.
04:13See you next time.
04:14And next time!
04:27See ya!
