00:05Hi guys, it's Megan from Refinery29. I'm here in our beauty test lab today to try out the
00:09Amica Triple Barrel Pro Curler Set. This is a curling iron that features three interchangeable
00:15rods that come in different sizes. There's a small one, there's a medium one, and there's
00:19a large barrel. And what this does is allows you to create a more natural wave and curl,
00:25because you're mixing up the size of the curl and the shape of the curl. So this starts off
00:32with these little knobs here, and that's how you start the process of taking them off. So say I
00:37wanted to start with the big one first. I push these two knobs together and I pull. As you can
00:43see, it takes a little bit of maneuvering, which I found a little bit annoying. The other thing is,
00:49this has to be off before you can switch the rods out. So that's very important, otherwise you will
00:55burn yourself. And I have brought along my own heat resistant glove. This set does not come with it,
01:00which I think is kind of a big fail for that, because when you're working with clipless curling
01:06irons, the chances of getting burned are much higher. So you really need to have something like
01:11this, especially if you're a klutz like me. Otherwise you'll have burns all over your hands.
01:15So I'm going to put on my glove first. And you have to line up the sides on the inside.
01:23So I'm lining it
01:24up. Again, this takes a little bit of wiggling and maneuvering. There we go. So then I'm going to
01:31turn on my iron. One of the great things about this is it heats up so fast. This literally takes
01:38about
01:3810 seconds to get to 360 degrees, which is great because you're not sitting around waiting for it
01:43to heat up. So another thing to keep in mind with this is that it has the swivel bottom, which
01:50I love,
01:51because when you're curling your hair, you don't want to get all wrapped up because you're doing
01:55kind of gymnastics to get your hands where they need to be to get the proper curl. So that's kind
02:00of a cool feature that I really like. So I'm up to 300 degrees already. It was really quick. So
02:07I'm
02:07going to curl my hair and I'm going to do it in the same method that we did in our
02:10How to Use a Curling
02:11Iron video, which you should have already mastered by now. And I'm going to take my hair and wrap it
02:17around the barrel. It's a good idea to section your hair off before you do this, but since I'm
02:25just showing you this one, I'm going to do it really quick. So then you hold it here for about
02:2810 seconds. And since I'm using the larger barrel, I'm going to get a looser wave. So I'm going to
02:35let
02:35go, let it fall. And you see I've got a little bit of a bend right here. So this is
02:39a very soft,
02:40loose wave. So now I want to switch out my barrel and try a smaller one to mix up the
02:47waves. The
02:47problem with this is you now have to turn off the curling iron and it does not cool down as
02:53fast as
02:54it heats up. So you're left waiting for quite a bit of time for it to cool down before you
02:59can switch
03:00to the next one. Obviously when you're curling your hair, the last thing you want to do is add
03:04more time onto that. So for me, I found that to be a big minus. Also the price is $225.
03:12I think the
03:13thinking behind that is you're getting three curling irons in one. But again, who needs three
03:17different curling irons? If you're looking to add variety and a difference in size to your curls,
03:22a great tip is to use a one and a half inch curling iron. And then for certain pieces, just
03:28grab the
03:29curl before it's cooled down and pull on it. This will separate the curl and make it a little looser
03:35and give you that variety of texture and shape that you're looking for. So unfortunately,
03:40I'm going to have to say that this is a fail in the beauty test lab. I think it has
03:43potential and
03:44I like the idea of the interchangeable rods. But with all of the time that you're wasting,
03:50trying to wait for it to cool down and switch things out, it can get very frustrating, especially
03:54if you're in a hurry or you're not looking to spend hours on your hair. And the price, again,
03:59is just a little too high for what it is. I think it's a better idea just to invest in
04:03a really
04:04great one and a half inch curling iron. That way you get that flexibility to create the waves that
04:09you're looking for in different sizes without having to spend the money on something that you
04:13probably won't end up using all that often because of the time consuming nature of it.
