Not many little girls have a hairstyle named after them. Actually, only one really comes to mind: Shirley Temple. Her tightly coiled curls are iconic and still serve as inspiration for many hairdos today. But, it's more of a look designated for our cute little cousins than for us. So, the challenge becomes how to make this look modern. Is it possible? We elected hairstylist Adam Maclay to find out. Watch the video to see if this age-old hairstyle can be transformed into a look more appropriate for the "adults" of the world. L'Oréal Elnett Satin Hairspray Strong Hold, $14.99, available at Ulta; Klorane Mango Oil, $16, available at Drugstore.com; Affinage Push Up Shiny Hair Wax, $15.19, available at Sleekhair.com.

00:09So my hair hasn't been this long for about 10 years and I'm really excited to be able to wear
00:13it curly, but I don't want to look like Shirley Temple. So I'm hoping Adam can show me some tricks.
00:18So Gabrielle, what is your big fear with Shirley Temple curls?
00:21I just feel like it looks too done and it would look like I was trying too hard. I just
00:24want it to look natural.
00:25It's that crispy effect and the uniformity of the curl.
00:28Totally.
00:29Okay. So we're going to really play on texture today. We are going to be curling, but we're going to
00:32change the variation so we get more texture rather than a uniformed curl for you.
00:37Great.
00:37You ready to dive in?
00:38Yes.
00:38Okay. So to make this look work, we really need to start our foundation with hairspray. So we're going to
00:43just really dirty up that hair so it really wants to hold that curl for us through this process.
00:50So because she has this shorter bob, you know, the underside is going to be a little less curly because
00:54it is so small.
00:55So I'm working with a half inch curling iron today to create this texture for her. We're just going to
00:59alternate. So that way it doesn't get that uniformity of the Shirley Temple look.
01:03It'll really just help create really fun movement in the hair.
01:08So another quick style here as well as you'll notice that I'm doing a vertical placement of a curl rather
01:12than horizontal.
01:13This will create more of that beachy wave rather than the old vintage waves as well.
01:18So we've just finished up this section. I'm going to keep moving up towards the crown.
01:23Something to think about when you're creating this texture is to vary the size of the sections you're taking. That
01:27way you get different types of texture.
01:29Typically we curl to the size of the curling iron. So by changing, doing half inch, inch sections, it's going
01:35to give you a really interesting texture.
01:37Today I'm going to work with the chlorine mango oil, which is going to help hydrate, add great shine.
01:42And then we're going to use the rat tail comb. We're going to break it up.
01:44The rat tail comb will help keep the integrity of the curl, but it won't give you the wavy effect
01:49as if we brushed it out.
01:51And so my last product is going to just be a shine product to help polish up the ends.
01:54Work the product into your fingertips like you're rubbing some dollar bills together and work that into the hair in
02:00the same motion.
02:00And that'll just help create some really interesting texture on the ends.
02:04I'm just going to finish with some hair spray.
02:08Are you ready to see yourself?
02:09I'm ready.
02:10Can't wait to show you.
02:12I love it. Oh my God, it's so cool.
02:15Just remember to alter your curls so you don't end up looking like Shirley Temple.
02:19Play with volume, keep it down, keep it up, have fun.
02:22Thank you so much.
02:23You're so welcome.
02:33You're welcome.
