00:00I was getting in trouble for not wearing gloves so I figured I would be a good
00:06role model this time.
00:12Hi everyone my name is Toshi Salvino aka Dolphy on Twitch, Facebook and
00:16Instagram. If you follow me there you will know that I do hair and makeup and
00:20wig styling tutorials. I'm a professional hairstylist but you don't have to be to
00:25do your own routes at home. I actually learned all by myself in my bathroom when
00:30I was 14 so if I can do it as a kid I totally believe that you can do it
00:35at
00:35home as well. You can get a lot of this stuff on Amazon, Sally's, online retailers.
00:41Safety is really important. Air color creates chemical vapors that can get me
00:46air so make sure that you have a window open or a fan on so that you are
00:50breathing fresh clean air and not inhaling things that will not make you
00:54feel good. I'm going to be using this violet colored lightener to bleach my
00:58roots. I personally like to use a bleach that says on scalp because this is a
01:03different type of formula that is a little bit less aggressive. Now I'm gonna
01:06go in with my 30 volume developer. I like to eyeball it but if you're completely
01:11new to this always follow the instructions on the box and if you have
01:14it it's always a great addition to add a bond builder into your lightener. Do a
01:19patch test on your skin beforehand that way you will know if it's safe
01:24to put all over your scalp or not. So now that I've mixed my first batch of bleach
01:30it's the consistency that I like and I'm ready to start. As you may have noticed I
01:35have pastel and neon hair but these techniques can work if you have blonde
01:40or a brighter intense color as well. So I'm gonna section off my hair starting at
01:45the top of my head and going down the side just kind of behind my ear. I'm going all
01:52of this backwards and then putting those forwards and out of the way. Ideally when
01:59you're doing your roots at home you want them to be at least a half inch to one
02:03inch long. And then taking not too much lightener just go in and apply your lightener. If your roots are
02:12super long
02:13you want to start on the outer part of the root first and then go back in and
02:18put the bleach right on your head after a little bit of time so that the
02:22lightening will come out evenly. I find it really helpful to take the brush with
02:27the lightener just on one side one little scoop of lightener on one side
02:31place that right along the root line apply a little pressure and sweep it
02:36backwards. One centimeter or half an inch apart is the ideal sizing for sections that
02:41way you make sure that everything is thoroughly saturated and you're not
02:44gonna get any weird spots that you missed. You want to make sure that you're doing
02:48the top and bottom of your section and then you just repeat that process all the
02:53way down. You want to be extra careful that when you're applying bleach you're
02:57not overlapping onto the hair that's been previously lightened. That's what's
03:01gonna cause damage and breakage especially if you're super light blonde or if
03:04your hair is like really super bleached already. If you're used to getting your hair
03:07done at a salon and you get highlights or balayage you might be used to getting a
03:11lot of foils in your hair. However if you're just lightening your roots you
03:14definitely don't need foils. Now I'm just gonna take my brush and part it going
03:21vertically this time instead of horizontally so that we can see if we've missed any
03:27sections. You want to make sure that when you're doing this you're not squishing
03:30the hair flat against the rest of the roots that you've already done. If you do
03:35accidentally get some bleach on hair that you don't want lightened you can just
03:39kind of scrape it off before it gets to processing. Ideally you want to be able
03:43to apply it within 20 minutes or half an hour and it's okay if you have to do the
03:48front section and the back section separately. Make sure to get all the
03:51little hairs behind your ears as well. I always miss those parts when I'm doing it.
03:57I'm going to cross-check the side section of my hair now. Since we did this one
04:01vertically I'm going to cross-check horizontally. Sometimes the bangs can
04:05be really short so using a comb to help you push the hairs is always a nice
04:09little helpful tool. So now my roots are thoroughly bleached. Now it's just time to
04:15wait. Remember you want the roots to be the color of the inside of a banana if
04:19you're going for a platinum blonde. Alright so it's been about half an hour now and
04:23my roots have thoroughly processed so I'm going to go and wash the bleach out of my
04:27hair. When you rinse out your hair you want to make sure to shampoo it very
04:30thoroughly and make sure to get in between all the spots and all the bleach
04:35off of your scalp and then make sure to shampoo it only. If you use conditioner
04:39it'll fill in the porosity and then your dye won't stick evenly. After I got done
04:43applying the bleach to my roots I went in and applied a deconditioner and a bunch
04:47of coconut oil to the rest of my hair that was left out. This way it's like I'm
04:51getting a deconditioning treatment while my roots are processing. Alright I'm back.
04:55So I blow-dried it all the way completely dry. If your hair isn't completely dry your
05:00color isn't gonna stick evenly so keep that in mind. If you are doing a toner
05:04apply it to the roots first in the same way that you applied the bleach and then
05:08wait a couple minutes like five to ten and then you can pull it through the
05:11rest of your hair. Alright now comes the fun part of coloring! So for my hair I
05:17personally like to use a really bright color pink and then dilute it with
05:20conditioner to get it to be at the level that I want. I'll be applying the colors to
05:25the roots first and then pulling it through with conditioner so that the
05:28tips of my hair are lighter and the roots are darker just to give it some fun
05:32dimension. I love doing the color portion because you don't have to be as careful
05:37as you do with bleach. It's kind of like a glorified conditioner. When you do start
05:42to move down the hair shop it's good to kind of mash the color with your fingers in
05:46between. That way it pushes the color into every part of the hair. So as I move up to
05:54the top of my head I want to start the color transition so I'm just gonna go in
05:58with a little pink at the root and then just a little bit of blue over it. I like to
06:05comb all the hair together, all the ends and the middle are still a little damp. That way
06:09different parts will absorb different colors that I've placed there. I have a
06:12little bit of a complicated color placement but as long as you put darker
06:17colors on the bottom and kind of lighter colors on top if you're doing multiples
06:21that usually proves to be a good effect. I want my bangs and my little sideburn
06:25areas on the top to be neon yellow. I think it looks really cute. I'm going to leave
06:33this in for one hour or until it's dried. Please keep in mind I'm using a temporary
06:37hair color. If you're using a toner or a permanent color or something please
06:43follow the directions on the dye. Alright we're done and here's my final look.
06:51Thank you guys so much for hanging out with me while I did my own roots at home.
06:55Remember guys that true beauty is on the inside and not what's on your head so the
06:58important thing here is to stay safe and stay healthy. Thank you so much for
07:02watching. Bye!
