00:00so now you want to cut this
00:04do you have better scissors mom
00:12hi my name is allegra edwards you probably recognize me from briarpatch
00:16now airing on usa network or the upcoming upload coming to amazon prime video on may 1st
00:22what's that sound hi mom hey what do you got there
00:26can you model it oh it's cute this is what we're making today a homemade mask for this activity
00:34you will need a pillowcase that you don't mind saying goodbye to and be sure to wash your pillow
00:40case before you begin pair of scissors pencil to mark where you need to cut tape measure or a ruler
00:47this is elastic you can also use ribbon if you don't have elastic some straight pins and if you
00:54don't have a sewing machine which we do over there you can also use a needle and thread these
00:58are designed for you to wear around your home or if you do have to go outside they are not
01:03meant to
01:04be a substitute for surgical or medical grade masks i am definitely not a seamstress nor am i a tailor
01:12or a sewer but my mother's pretty good and so we're gonna do it together right mom yep we have
01:17selected
01:17the pillowcase of choice so we're gonna start up here all the way down nine inches it's gonna be
01:28six inches i have found just from personal experience that when i wear a mask i am less likely to
01:36touch my
01:36face nice this is my mom closer up say hi genie hi genie hi classic by this point
01:47you should have two six by nine pieces of cotton pillowcase you want the bright side as mom says
01:53to be on the inside so you're gonna make them kiss
01:58and line them up so the dull side is on the outside the bright side is on the inside just
02:03like all of us
02:04the bright side is the right side yeah baby all right i'm handing it over to the mistress seamstress
02:11herself she's starting at about the halfway point and then she's gonna sew straight down
02:17she's gonna stop just before the edge so that she can tuck in the elastic and the elastic she's
02:23gonna put in at an angle and then she's gonna make sure that the needle goes over the elastic so
02:28that
02:28it's really stuck in there then again she's stopping before she gets to the bottom and she's gonna tuck
02:34that end of the elastic underneath that corner there and then she's gonna go over it again
02:42why thank you like you're welcome mom very well done so now that we've put in the second piece of
02:48elastic she's gonna sew up the fourth side of the rectangle here she'll get to that corner and tuck
02:56the elastic in making sure that it lies flat on the inside of this little pillow that we're making
03:04she's gonna go over it a couple times so that it's secure
03:07mom has cut off all of the loose threads she's left that little gap so that she can turn
03:12the mask inside out or she likes to say bright side out
03:20this is the part that i'm really good at pinning we're gonna make basically make three
03:25on each side three pins uh what this is gonna do is cinch it so that it hugs your face
03:30start by folding over and we'll take this straight pin here and we're gonna go back out
03:42and then you'll want to do it on the opposite side see that and this is what it looks like
03:49on the other
03:49side that's my cat he misses me so you have three on this side three on this side on to
03:59the next step
04:00what we do is we are going to just sew all the way around very close to the edge we'll
04:05take the pins
04:06out at the last moment so we don't break the needle and then this unfinished part you can
04:13sort of tuck in and sew it down it's just pretty organic organic like an apple like an apple
04:20then you'll see that once she gets to the bottom here she's going to go over it a couple times
04:24just
04:25for extra security cut if you don't have access to a sewing machine that's okay you can do this with
04:32needle and thread super simple we've got our seven inch long pieces of ribbon that we're using instead
04:37of elastic and again the bright sides of the fabric are facing the middle you're going to take the
04:43needle and thread and start in the center and then work your way up lengthwise so on that long side
04:48when you reach the corner you're going to take the piece of ribbon and put it in the corner in
04:54between
04:54the pieces of fabric at an angle and then you're going to sew over a few times just so that
05:00it's secure
05:01you'll tuck the ribbon inside making sure it's clear of your sewing you're going to go up that
05:08shorter edge eventually you'll flip it inside out again just like you did with the elastic version
05:14here's a super simple no sew version with a handkerchief you're going to fold it in half
05:18then take a coffee filter and place it in the center fold the top half down and the bottom half
05:24up
05:26then take a hair elastic and thread it through then i like to take the tail ends and tuck one
05:32into the other for a little bit more security so real talk this is moderately easy to make um
05:51obviously it helps if you've got experience with a sewing machine but if you only have a needle and
05:56thread i think it's pretty straightforward and you know what not very many people are going to see
06:01you in it so even if it's a little iffy at first that's okay so give it a try i
06:07encourage you to
06:08try it on your own let me know if you think it's difficult maybe i was way off make sure
06:13you cover
06:14your nose there you go i lost an earring say thanks mom thanks mom no no stay safe out there
06:22wash your hands
