00:00Hire more black people.
00:01You need more black people in these spaces.
00:03You need more black people to speak about black experiences.
00:07You cannot try to exploit something that you know nothing about.
00:11I think there's a huge disparity in how black creators are treated when it comes to brand
00:16opportunities, when it comes to how we're engaged.
00:19And I think that it's about whether or not they value women of color the same way that
00:26they value white women.
00:27And we've seen time and time again that's not the case.
00:31I've been paid less than black men.
00:35I've been paid less than white women and white men.
00:39I think black women are the last to be thought about when we're talking about equality and
00:47pay.
00:47There is a hefty group of people who have lived very comfortable lives but don't realize sort
00:54of the carnage that was left to the side and that was hidden from them so they could live
00:58a comfortable life.
00:59I more so have an issue with the way that black women are addressed as girls.
01:04You want to address a black man as a black boy.
01:06You'll hear some people say, oh they're being overly sensitive.
01:10It's about listening and trying to understand that person's perspective or point of view
01:16and the reason why they're being offended.
01:18I feel a lot of times diversity is treated as a trend but the color of my skin is not
01:22a trend.
01:23It's also about longevity and implementing real change and real change doesn't happen overnight
01:28as we see because we're still having these discussions in 2019.
01:31Today, more mainstream media is inclusive and bringing black women into certain spaces but
01:38there's so much more that can be done and I think we're tired of doing all the work.
01:46It's time for more allies to step in.
01:49It's time for our brothers to step in as well.
01:53There's just way more to do.
01:54Sometimes it can feel very heavy when you are just thinking of yourself as black women,
02:00black women.
02:01I feel like it's important for us to show the full spectrum of our identity.
02:07As a woman of color, as a black woman, it's important for me to narrate a journey that
02:16resonates well with other women of color.
02:19The narrative of there is no specific way to be black.
02:23There's no way to be just one black person.
02:27We're not one dimensional things, especially being a black woman.
02:30We don't see women of color can be everything.
02:33They can be scientists, they can be chefs, they can be lawyers.
02:37They can be a lawyer that also twerks.
02:38But you can't put limits on black women and you know,
02:41black women can't be defined or put into a box.
02:44You know, we get to be a part of the natural hair campaign or something that's specifically
02:49marketed to us.
02:51We wear makeup, we use lifestyle products, we use feminine products,
02:56we wear clothing.
02:58All of the general things that a person of any background would use include black women.
03:04You know, we are trendsetters, we are creators, we are valuable and gorgeous and have so much to
03:11offer and share.
03:12Having one black woman in the room is not enough and it doesn't speak for all of us when it
03:19comes to
03:20some of these companies who are really trying to integrate culture.
03:23You shouldn't just hire more of us, you should listen to us, you should spend time with us,
03:30you should embrace us, you should pay us, and you should really understand how our stories
03:40and who we are as women has shaped the country of America.
03:44Advice for up-and-coming black female creators, make sure you know yourself without wi-fi.
03:55Why? Like seriously. Because your worth is going to be tested, your value is going to be challenged,
04:06you're going to be thrusted into a room full of noise, and you're gonna have to know what your own
04:13voice sounds like so you can honor it.
04:15Stay true to who you are. Putting on a face every day gets exhausting.
04:22There are so many women that are in the same place that you are, and you can't dictate what other
04:29people perceive you as, but you can dictate the way that you perceive yourself.
04:34Your power is your power, no one else is like you, so what's for you is for you.
04:39So inevitably, nothing can really be taken away from you because it's already yours.
