Do you know everything you need to know about STIs?
Transcript
00:01Yes! What?
00:04False.
00:05I guess I have to go back to school to relearn everything.
00:07I'm Steve Dawson. Welcome to the Sex Ed Game Show.
00:10We're putting your STI knowledge to the test.
00:14What does STI stand for?
00:17Sexually transmitted infection.
00:19That's right, Anthony. STI stands for sexually transmitted infection.
00:24What is the most common STI in the U.S.?
00:28Herpes.
00:30Damn it! Okay.
00:32Let's say chlamydia.
00:35Gonorrhea.
00:37What?
00:38The answer is HPV. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the U.S.
00:44About 40 types of HPV can be spread through sexual contact.
00:48What can happen if you have an STI and don't get treated for it?
00:54Many things leading up to death.
00:56Well, you can spread it to other people because you're not getting tested and you don't know what you have
01:01or who you're giving it to.
01:03Something like that, guys.
01:04But if it's not treated early, some STIs can do permanent damage to your health.
01:09You also risk spreading the infection to others.
01:12It's important to get tested regularly, folks.
01:14If you use it correctly, PrEP can lower your chances of getting HIV from sex by what percent?
01:22Ten percent.
01:25Ninety percent.
01:28That is correct, Anthony.
01:30If you use it correctly, PrEP can lower your chances of getting HIV from sex by more than 90 percent.
01:36True or false?
01:37STIs always have visible symptoms.
01:41False.
01:41If you answered false, you are correct.
01:44You can't always see an STI.
01:46In fact, many STIs have no symptoms at all.
01:49To fully protect yourself, you and your partner need to get tested.
01:53Thankfully, common STIs can be treated and most can be cured.
01:57True or false?
01:58You can only get an STI from penetrated sex.
02:03False.
02:04Great job, Gia.
02:05The answer is false.
02:06Unprotected oral, anal, and vaginal sex can leave you vulnerable to STIs.
02:11So keep yourself protected.
02:13Next question.
02:14What does a pap smear test for?
02:17A pap smear tests for all-around vaginal health, and women are supposed to get a pap smear at least
02:22once a year?
02:24No.
02:25Tough luck, gang.
02:26A pap smear, also called a pap test, is a procedure to test for cervical cancer in female-bodied people
02:33by collecting cells from your cervix.
02:35Alright.
02:36Here's a tricky one for you.
02:37What is the difference between cold sores and herpes?
02:42Physical location on your body.
02:45That was close, Anthony.
02:47But just for clarification, herpes come in two different strains.
02:51HSV-1 usually causes sores on or around your mouth,
02:55while HSV-2 generally causes sores around your genitals.
02:59Because of this, HSV-1 is often called oral herpes, while HSV-2 is referred to as genital herpes.
03:06However, it's totally possible to get either kind in either location.
03:11True or false, you can't get an STI from oral sex.
03:16False.
03:17The answer is false.
03:18Although the risk of getting an STI through oral sex is generally less than vaginal sex or anal sex, there
03:25is still a risk.
03:26The infections most commonly passed on through oral sex are herpes, gonorrhea, and syphilis.
03:32True or false, you can get HIV from a tattoo or body piercing.
03:39False.
03:40Right?
03:41No.
03:42You can't...
03:43True.
03:44Any blood-to-blood contact.
03:46I mean, any good tattoo artist is gonna have a thing on their wall that says that they know how
03:50to handle blood-borne pathogens.
03:52I have a tattoo too, and I never noticed that.
03:55You didn't check?
03:55I did not check.
03:56No.
03:57Okay.
03:58That's right, our inked-up friend Anthony.
04:00The answer is true.
04:02There can be a risk, but it is low.
04:04If the instruments used for piercings or tattooing either are not sterilized or disinfected between clients, you may be exposed
04:12to HIV or another blood-borne infection.
04:15Any instrument used to pierce or cut the skin should be used once and then disposed of safely.
04:20What happened to the D in STD?
04:23Why was the D replaced with an I in STI?
04:27Okay.
04:28So STD in recent years was changed from sexually transmitted disease to sexually transmitted infection.
04:34I don't really know why.
04:36Great job, Gia.
04:37You might remember that STIs used to be called STDs, as in sexually transmitted diseases.
04:42This was a misnomer since most are simple infections.
04:45But just because it's a simple infection doesn't mean it shouldn't be treated.
04:50True or false, herpes currently has an infection.
04:55True.
04:56It's got like treatments and creams and stuff, but there's no way to actually get rid of it.
05:01That's right, Anthony.
05:02The answer is true.
05:03Herpes does not have a cure.
05:05Herpes is not life-threatening and can be managed with a daily medication to prevent outbreaks.
05:11How can you reduce the risk of getting an STI?
05:14You can reduce the risk of getting an STI, of course, through types of prevention.
05:19So you have condoms, dental dams, and I guess you could, of course, practice abstinence, but...
05:23Pat yourself on the back for that one, Gia.
05:26There is a lot you can do.
05:27Take preventative measures such as getting the proper vaccinations.
05:32Use a condom or a dental dam during sexual intercourse.
05:36Avoid risky sex practices that could tear or break the skin.
05:39Get tested regularly and talk to your partner about their sexual history.
05:43Next question.
05:45True or false, STI testing is always a part of your annual exam, either at a primary care
05:52physician's office or at the OBGYN.
05:56Some of those things will be readily apparent in like your usual blood work, but otherwise
06:01you have to ask specifically for STD testing.
06:04Point for you, Anthony.
06:05The answer is false.
06:07If you want to be screened for STIs, you typically have to ask for it.
06:10Many doctors don't regularly test their patients for STIs.
06:14Asking for a test is the only way to be certain of your status.
06:18Congratulations, Anthony, for being our big wiener winner.
06:22Woo!
06:23Yeah!
06:24I never win anything.
06:24This is awesome.
06:25Guys, thank you so much for joining us for another episode of Sex Ed Game Show.
06:29Remember to study up and always practice safe sex.
