00:00My theory is it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission.
00:04Hey, I'm Bobby Burke from Netflix's Queer Eye, and I am here at Refinery29.
00:10So, BobbyBurke.com is kind of the place where you can go to find all the things you're wanting to
00:15ask about Queer Eye, but can't.
00:18So, it's not just about design, although design is a big component of it, obviously because I'm a designer.
00:23It's also about a lot of self-care and lifestyle and health and fitness, everything that encompasses a healthy self
00:29-care lifestyle, you'll find on BobbyBurke.com.
00:35Don't just think about your space horizontally, think of it in 3D.
00:38If you have a decent height ceiling, do a loft bed, because why take up all your floor real estate
00:43for a bed?
00:44You know, put your bed up higher and be able to use the space beneath the bed for a desk
00:49or a sofa or a little office.
00:51And if you can't do a loft bed, at least stack your bed up a little bit to where you
00:55can get drawers underneath it or boxes,
00:58so that way you're really utilizing all your real estate.
01:01Also, make your furniture do double time.
01:03If you are going to do a dining room table in a small space, use cubes for seating,
01:07because that way the cubes can completely push underneath the table.
01:11They don't visually take up too much space, and you can get ones that have storage, so you can keep
01:15all your crap in those as well.
01:20So making a rented space feel like home can be hard sometimes if you've got a strict landlord.
01:25My theory is it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission.
01:29So go ahead and paint anyways. Just paint it back white when you're done.
01:33Don't paint wood, don't paint cabinets, but feel free to paint your walls.
01:36Just make sure you fix it before you leave.
01:39Also, temporary wallpaper is a really great way to zhuzh up your apartment and make it feel like home,
01:45give it some personality, and rugs.
01:48You know, if you have ugly carpet, get a big rug that almost covers up the whole room,
01:51because that will make it feel more like you, and it's not the same carpet as from people that lived
01:55there before.
02:00So the thing that I always recommend splurging on is your bedding, your mattress.
02:03You spend a huge chunk of your life in bed resting, and you want to wake up feeling good.
02:08If you're in a crappy bed that makes you sore and awful in the morning,
02:13you start your day out in a bad mood because you start out uncomfortable.
02:16So splurge on bedding.
02:18Even when I lived in a tiny little one-room apartment in New York with no money,
02:22I would save up for good bedding because I wanted to go home and go to sleep and relax,
02:27and I wanted to wake up feeling refreshed.
02:32Something that excites me right now in the design space is my new furniture collection.
02:36Modern, yet comfortable, kind of a mid-century flair when it comes to like clean modern lines,
02:43but also kind of like this Parisian deco vibe going on that I wasn't even really planning on.
02:48And then it just happened, and it's really pretty.
02:50So pieces that can go with a lot of different things.
02:53It's not just one genre, like if you only like modern, you'll only like it.
02:57You can mix and match it with a lot of different things.
02:59Thanks so much for watching, everybody. Hope to see you all soon.
