Lauren Underwood talks about why she decided to run for congress in this midterm election.
Transcript
00:01I'm a nurse with a pre-existing condition myself.
00:04I know how critical it is for people to have access to medications and procedures when they need it,
00:08particularly when they have a chronic illness.
00:11The cavalier way that Washington Republicans treat our health care system is one that I just can't get behind.
00:17Concerns about health care are one of the top issues in the midterms.
00:2164% of people think that they want more people insured.
00:24People are really scared about what is going to happen.
00:26We are energized and motivated to do the work.
00:29We've got to fix our system.
00:36My name is Lauren Underwood, and I'm running for Congress in the Illinois 14th District.
00:41The summer after third grade, we took some swim lessons.
00:44And I was a master floater, killed breaststroke and backstroke.
00:48The day we had to learn how to tread water, I got very nervous.
00:52I was crying and I got worked up.
00:53My heart was racing just because of the anxiety.
00:55We ended up going to my doctor's office. My heart is still racing.
00:58They told me to go to the emergency department, still racing, and ultimately got this diagnosis of supraventricular tachycardia.
01:05And it means I have a rapid heart rate.
01:07And sometimes it gets into these cycles where it just doesn't get the signal to slow down as a result
01:12of stimulus or stress.
01:13The care that I received from those doctors and nurses really inspired me.
01:17I was so attracted to the idea of helping people, helping communities.
01:21I picked nursing and discovered public health and have been on that path ever since.
01:27I've spent my career working to expand health care coverage in communities across our country.
01:31I was in the Obama administration working to implement the Affordable Care Act at the federal level.
01:35And then decided to return home to Illinois.
01:39I found myself at my congressman's one and only public event of 2017.
01:44He promised that he was going to protect health care coverage for people like me with pre-existing conditions.
01:49And then he went and broke his word.
01:51Literally for so many families, it's a matter of life and death.
01:58I was really upset.
01:59And instead of just letting that feeling pass, I pursued it.
02:04So I said, you know what? It's on.
02:08Running for congress, I have been embraced by this community, this community that raised me.
02:13But these few men who doubted just because I'm a woman, it sort of threw me.
02:19I was being challenged and threatened and disrespected.
02:23I didn't even have the vocabulary for it.
02:25I didn't have the tools to respond because it's nothing that I had ever experienced before.
02:30That's part of the opportunity we have in this next generation of leaders who are stepping forward in this country.
02:35For folks to recognize that there's different faces of leadership.
02:42There is so much at stake in this election.
02:45If you care about health care, you have to vote.
02:49Fundamental women's reproductive health care rights are on the ballot this year.
02:53Funding for public education.
02:55How many of us went to our local schools and got a great education?
02:58How many of us went to our local schools and maybe got a substandard education because we lived in the
03:03wrong zip code?
03:04Take advantage of the opportunity to elect a congress that better represents the experiences of the American people,
03:10who for so long have not had a voice in our decision-making process in Washington.
03:14Now that's going to change.
03:15Make a plan to vote because our future depends on it.
03:20Absolutely.
03:26I want to recommend that we canAKE up of a white woman university.
03:27How many of us went to our local schools and are factors working on our national security movement.
03:28How many of us went to our También.
03:28How many people??
