00:00Aww, look at that cute baby!
00:03You know, babies sure are cute, but man, am I happy that I don't have one right now.
00:07Oh, I am not ready for that shit.
00:11Oh no!
00:13I forgot to take my birth control yesterday!
00:16I'm gonna get pregnant! I'm too young for this!
00:18I am far too young for this!
00:19I gotta go, I gotta find my stuff, I gotta get my bag!
00:21I have to call Dr. Wendy and get to the think tank!
00:26Dr. Wendy! Dr. Wendy! Dr. Wendy!
00:30You're here!
00:31Okay, Dr. Wendy, so my first question, is contraception another word for birth control?
00:36It is.
00:37Yeah.
00:37Basically, contraception is any form of preventative, not getting pregnant measure.
00:43I've been on birth control now for almost 10 years.
00:46Pills.
00:46And my issue with them is that I'm not certain they're good for my overall health.
00:53I'd say birth control pills, for the most part, are pretty safe, everything has risks.
00:57But an IUD is a really effective form of birth control with less side effects generally than
01:03the birth control pills.
01:04So an IUD is going to work by creating more cervical mucus, which is, the cervix is kind
01:09of like the passageway between the sperm and the egg.
01:12And so if you block the sperm from getting through the cervix, then you kind of are doing
01:16something similar to what a condom does as far as creating that barrier.
01:19A pill actually stops your ovary from releasing an egg, so there's no egg there.
01:25So even though the sperm can get through the cervix and into the uterus, there's no egg for
01:30it to fertilize.
01:31Okay, so I think I need a visual to understand this IUD situation.
01:36I can demonstrate it for you.
01:37Ooh.
01:37Cool.
01:38This is sperm.
01:39Wow.
01:40This is cervical mucus.
01:42Okay.
01:43This is your cervix and your uterus.
01:47I see.
01:50And you know what, Lucy?
01:52There's an egg down there that wants to be fertilized.
01:54So this person seems to be potentially pregnant if she's not on any form of birth control.
01:59Fertility.
02:00Now, let's get rid of these sperm.
02:01Get out of there, sperm.
02:03Oh, oh, oh, some sperm right here left behind.
02:04Imagine, this is cervical mucus.
02:07And it is now blocking the passageway between the vagina and the uterus where the egg resides.
02:16Okay.
02:16Try it again, Lucy.
02:19Mmm.
02:19Oh.
02:20Mmm.
02:20Mmm.
02:22Oh wow, that's a lot of sperm and no baby.
02:24Nice try, sperm.
02:26It's a one-way street in that vagina.
02:28It's coming out.
02:28Pretty much the most effective is anything that's long-acting, including an IUD and an
02:34implant.
02:34So what makes something more effective or less effective?
02:37Mostly it has to do with user error.
02:39So it comes down to whether or not you're going to take it properly, you're going to
02:43use it properly.
02:44An IUD or an implant are inserted and they stay there until you say, take them out.
02:49Dr. Wendy, we've been talking about IUDs for so long and I'm not even sure I know
02:53what it stands for.
02:54An IUD stands for an intrauterine device.
02:58Yes.
02:58Because it's inside.
03:00The uterus.
03:00Of the uterus.
03:01So you've brought all of your tools.
03:03I have.
03:03Walk me through everything before us.
03:05So there are multiple different.
03:07This is the copper IUD.
03:08Copper.
03:09See there's copper around that plastic.
03:10These represent the progesterone containing IUDs.
03:13Do you see this little piece of plastic here?
03:15That is what has the progesterone in it that releases constantly for years.
03:20Imagine this is the vagina.
03:23The IUD goes through this part, which is the cervix, into here.
03:27That looks painful.
03:29It's not so bad.
03:30How big is this little space?
03:32Only big enough for the IUD.
03:33Only big enough for the IUD.
03:35So what I do is I put it in there and then I release it and then I take this
03:43out and the
03:44IUD stays.
03:45Oh, wow.
03:46Can I do it?
03:47If you like.
03:48Oh, let's reset this IUD.
03:50Just relax, sweetie.
03:51It's only going to take a second.
03:57How you doing?
03:58You okay?
04:00Take a deep breath.
04:01And then pull it down.
04:03There you go.
04:04Take a deep breath.
04:06Oh, there it is.
04:08Take a deep breath.
04:09And you have an IUD.
04:11We'll see.
04:12But at the end of the day, there is a contraceptive for everyone and for every lifestyle and you
04:17should speak to your doctor to find out what that is for you.
04:20Not all contraceptives prevent STIs.
04:23Right.
04:24So you have to make sure to wear a condom for extra protection against any STIs.
04:29That's true.
04:30So wear your condoms.
04:31Talk to your doctor about the best form of contraception for you.
04:35And don't forget to contact Dr. Wendy on Instagram at Dr. Every Woman because she has
04:40got all the answers.
04:41We'll see you next week on the Think Tank.
04:43Bye.
04:44Bye.
04:44Bye.
04:45Bye.
04:45Bye.
04:45Bye.
04:46Bye.
