00:00Plastic surgery. Plastic surgery. Plastic surgery. Like getting Botox at like 25
00:06which a lot of people do. Oh she got lip fillers. Yeah they're fake. You wanna feel
00:10them? Um well I don't know I'm putting myself into a hole. I get it every three
00:14to four months. Today we're talking about something incredibly taboo and that is
00:19plastic surgery. Hi guys I'm Ariana. My name is Ashley. I'm Sam and I'm cool with
00:24plastic surgery. I feel great about plastic surgery. Plastic surgery is a-okay.
00:29Plastic surgery is a great thing. I am not a fan of plastic surgery. I am
00:34against unnecessary excessive plastic surgery. I've had Botox in my forehead
00:38twice. I absolutely have had fillers done. My upper lip done with I believe it was
00:44Restylane. I've only had it done here in my laugh lines twice and I was really
00:50happy with the result. About seven months ago I had a breast reduction and it was a
00:55very scary decision. It was something I felt very proud and empowered doing.
00:59According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons procedures have risen
01:03over a hundred and fifteen percent in the past ten years. I think plastic surgery is
01:07a great option for people that want to modify their body or they just don't feel
01:13comfortable about something and they want to make it better. If you buy a
01:16Lamborghini you don't leave it parked on the street and then ten years down the
01:20road take it in for repairs. You take it in once a year have it serviced and you
01:26prevent it from falling into disrepair. I think if you are feeling your best self
01:32is diminishing physically and you have the means to fix that I don't see a
01:39problem with that. I am not a fan of plastic surgery because I feel like this
01:42is the way I came into the world. I'm this way for a reason. We live in a culture
01:46right now that values appearance so much that people are putting themselves in
01:49danger. If I could put lipstick on my face if I could shave the hair for my legs as a
01:54choice why can't I like get a little bit of Botox to keep this wrinkle that's
01:57bothering me. I think there's a huge stigma with plastic surgery generally
02:01just because of that idea of people being fake. And I think the ideas that we
02:06see plastic surgery kind of play out in are through you know this plastic
02:10culture. There is a certain amount of pressure especially for women to look a
02:14certain way especially now with social media and reality TV stars that are
02:17always just looking so perfect. It is a cosmetic sort of world. God forbid a woman
02:22should feel a little bit better about herself. Sometimes I think a lot of
02:25women think that they will feel better about themselves if they kind of measure
02:29up to that standard. There's a no-win situation for women when it comes to
02:32plastic surgery. We're like raised constantly looking in a mirror and
02:35constantly worrying about how we look and therefore how we feel. As a society we
02:40have decided that once a woman reaches a certain age and looks a certain way she
02:46is no longer a valid person. So along comes plastic surgery which allows women to
02:53like you know maybe feel a little bit better about themselves because society
02:56has put these impossible beauty standards upon women of a certain age and then
03:02guess what happened? Society shames them for doing plastic surgery. What kind of
03:05fucked up circle is that? There's something to be said for aging gracefully. It's
03:10definitely not for me. I don't think growing older is ugly and I think that's a big
03:14problem with our youth-obsessed culture. In America youth is valued. You're only
03:20attractive if you're 18. That's kind of ridiculous. I'm fine with developing
03:25wrinkles. Celebrities are constantly scrutinized for their desire or lack
03:28thereof to go under the knife. Jane Fonda goes in for some Botox and it's like
03:32something that Megyn Kelly wants to talk to her about on her TV show. We look at the
03:37Kardashians. They're everywhere. They're really in our face. They're open to
03:40having plastic surgery and I think these are kind of like the beautiful girls
03:44that society is kind of like looking at and I think that just to keep your face
03:48looking as fresh and tight and taut and shiny as possible is kind of like shoved
03:53in women's face. One thing about plastic surgery that I've experienced is that the
03:57results aren't exactly what you envisioned that they'd be. If someone's
04:01watching the Kardashians or reading a magazine or even on our website and they
04:05see someone who's had something done to their face or to their body they should
04:09really try and be as realistic as possible. There are people who suffer depression
04:13afterwards. It's because you're pinning all your hopes that this is going to change
04:17everything. It doesn't work like that. If you don't know how to be happy with
04:21yourself before you even get plastic surgery then maybe that's something you
04:24should work on first. There are some people who take it to an extreme who want
04:28to become like a living doll. Those are just people who are like addicted to the
04:32idea of becoming something that they're not. If that plastic surgery isn't hurting
04:36them or it's not hurting the people around them then like who are you to
04:40say how much is too much. It's a real thing to get become addicted to plastic
04:45surgery. I think that people can go overboard and it can take away from a
04:48person's character. I think the number one rule is safety above all else and I
04:53think because it is a medical procedure you know not taking it lightly. Life
04:57altering surgery that you can die from you can die from plastic surgery. There's the
05:02risk that you'll get an infection. There's the risk of necrosis which is flesh
05:05rotting off your body. Even small plastic surgery like Botox can cause
05:09botulism, facial paralysis that you cannot fix. Why would I risk my life or
05:14put myself under the knife to look better for what society thinks I should look like?
05:18We are scrutinized as women and we really need to change that dialogue and feel
05:23empowered whether that means you're empowered through the plastic surgery or
05:26you're empowered to never change anything about your body and age
05:30completely naturally. I think just do your research and be as educated as you can be
05:34and don't be judgmental for someone. If they have an insecurity or if they have a
05:38certain confidence that they want to make even more profound and more powerful
05:42just be on their side. If you think you would like to get it done just do
05:47something that makes you happy because you've only got like one life I guess if
05:52you believe in that. Know that you shouldn't look at a magazine and be like
05:56that's what I need to look like because nobody looks like that. I think the best way to
06:01be beautiful is to love yourself first and foremost. To go under the knife or to
06:06not go under the knife it's clearly a divisive issue. We've heard many different
06:10points on both sides and it's clear that plastic surgery serves a variety of
06:14different functions. Remember that it's about your choice, your body, and what makes
06:18you feel best. See you next time.
