"If nobody speaks up, nothing changes" — MakeLoveNotPorn founder Cindy Gallop at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Transcript
00:01I'm Bridget. I'm here at the Daring Women's Summit with Cindy Gallop.
00:05Cindy, you have an amazing life story, so you got your start in theatre.
00:09How did you wind up doing what you're doing now?
00:12By complete and total accident, really.
00:14Nothing in my life and career has ever been planned.
00:17I began working in the theatre as a publicity and marketing officer
00:20until I got completely fed up with earning chicken feed, working 24-7.
00:26Therefore, sold out the establishment, went to advertising,
00:29worked in advertising for a very long time,
00:31and then jumped ship in 2005 and found myself an entrepreneur and a consultant.
00:38And that's what I do today.
00:39So tell me about Make Love Not Porn.
00:42So Make Love Not Porn particularly is a complete accident.
00:45I never consciously, intentionally set out to do anything.
00:48I bizarrely found myself doing it now.
00:50It comes out of direct personal experience. I date younger men.
00:53And so about nine or ten years ago,
00:55I realised that I was encountering what happens
00:58when today's total freedom of access to hardcore porn online
01:03meets our society's equally total reluctance to talk openly and honestly about sex
01:08and results in porn becoming by default the sex education today in not a good way.
01:13I went, I want to do something about it, and I started Make Love Not Porn.com.
01:17And I launched it at TED with a TED talk that went viral because I was very explicit in it.
01:23And that drove an extraordinary global response to my tiny clunky website,
01:28which led me to turn it into Make Love Not Porn.tv,
01:31which is a video sharing platform that celebrates real world sex.
01:35So why do you think this resonated with people so much?
01:37Oh, because it is absolutely what has been happening all around the world in every single country
01:44that nobody ever talks about but everybody experiences.
01:48I love it.
01:49So tell me about your other really exciting venture, If We Ran The World.
01:53So that was what I was working on when Make Love Not Porn blew up.
01:56And I had to kind of back burner it to build Make Love Not Porn.
02:00But I designed Make Love Not Porn around what If We Ran The World is designed to do.
02:04So I believe the future of business is doing good and making money simultaneously.
02:09And so I believe the business model of the future is shared values plus shared action equals shared profit.
02:16Financial profit and social profit.
02:18And so If We Ran The World is co-action software designed to help brands and consumers collaborate and co
02:25-act to inculcate that business model.
02:28Awesome.
02:28So one other question I wanted to ask about is you're very vocal about diversity at large corporations and businesses.
02:34What do you think we can do to make these places more diverse?
02:38Oh, what we have to do to make businesses more diverse is very simple.
02:43We have to break the closed loop at the top of every industry and company of white guys talking to
02:48white guys about other white guys.
02:50And the way we break that is those white guys don't want to change anything.
02:56They're sitting pretty.
02:57They've made their millions.
02:59They've got their bonuses.
03:00Why would they ever want to rock the boat?
03:02So it doesn't matter how much they talk about diversity.
03:04They are not doing anything and they're not going to do anything.
03:07So change happens from the bottom up, not the top down.
03:11Change will come from every one of us every day micro acting and calling this out and working to change
03:17it.
03:17Because if nobody speaks up, nothing changes.
03:20Fantastic.
03:21Thank you so much, Cindy.
03:22It's a pleasure.
03:24Thank you so much.
03:26You
