00:00With its roots in Brazil and Asia,
00:02MMA is one of the most challenging sports in the world.
00:06Today, I'm going to learn what it takes in the cage and on the mat
00:10from one of the top MMA trainers in the country.
00:14Follow me to see what it takes to be a badass at MMA.
00:24So, Marcus, what exactly is MMA?
00:27MMA is mixed martial arts.
00:29Anything goes, basically, with 27 rules.
00:32What's the first rule?
00:33The first rule, they're not in order,
00:35but it's no strikes to the groin, no eye poking, no eye gouging,
00:39no sticking your fingers into open wounds, things like that.
00:43Wow. All right, well, I'm glad to hear that.
00:45Yes. So, you're going to hit your left first.
00:46Just do your first few left. Yes.
00:49Turn your hip into it. Good.
00:51Now, put it together. One, two. Left, right.
00:55Good. Again.
00:56Now, we're going to switch to the kicks. Good.
01:00Again. Nice. And one more. And break. Nice.
01:04That I like.
01:05So, what is it that's so unique about MMA that draws people to the sport?
01:09You know, you get your stamina, you get your explosiveness, agility,
01:12but your ultimate goal is to get the opponent to submit to you.
01:16But, to us especially, it's a beautiful thing.
01:19Well, it's innately primal. Yes, very.
01:21It just feels natural. I understand the beauty of that.
01:24Okay.
01:24So, now we're going to transition from the striking.
01:26Okay.
01:26To the grappling part.
01:28I'm going to teach you some basic takedowns.
01:30Wrap your arms around my legs. Yes.
01:31And then pick me up on your shoulder.
01:34Nice. Look at that. Now what?
01:36Now, you're going to swing my legs to the side a little bit.
01:39This way?
01:39And drop it to your left. Yes.
01:41Like this?
01:42Beautiful. Nice. Now get the air ball. Nice. Good. Perfect.
01:53So, what's the key to MMA success?
01:55Grit.
01:56Being able to do the same thing over and over and over again,
01:59to be willing to put your ego aside and get beat up and get choked out,
02:03just so that you can improve.
02:05We're going to start with what's called a seat belt position.
02:08One arm over and one arm under.
02:10And then you're just going to connect your arms.
02:12Okay.
02:13And then you fall to the side where you have that arm on.
02:16Now slide that arm through as deep as you can.
02:18You snake it around.
02:19Good. Grab the bicep.
02:20The reason why you grab the bicep and bring your arm up,
02:22now you locked your arm.
02:23Now I can't get to your arm.
02:24And then you bring it behind my head.
02:26Now I can't go for that arm.
02:28Keep squeezing.
02:29Squeeze, squeeze, squeeze, squeeze, squeeze.
02:35Oh my God.
02:38That is really good. Beautiful.
02:40One more time.
02:41Oh my God.
02:42This is really, really awesome.
02:43I'm barely applying any pressure and you're getting choked out.
02:47It's not based on strength.
02:48It's all technique.
02:50Nice.
02:50You did really good.
02:52You ready to put it all to test?
02:54I am.
02:54All right.
02:55We're going to do some fighting.
02:56Okay.
02:57Let's go.
02:59This is so powerful.
03:01I really understood how empowering this can be.
03:03It is.
03:04And it's something that I think that all women should learn.
03:06This is how dads make sure that their daughters can take care of themselves.
03:10And even just to get released.
03:13You know?
03:13If you hate your boss, you hate your job.
03:15This is a great way of just punching things.
03:22That was no joke.
03:25I am telling you, I used my entire body.
03:28There was not one muscle that I did not incorporate.
03:31Yes.
03:32I knew that it was really next level fitness when my kneecaps were sweating.
03:35I thought that was a good indication of how I was using my entire body.
