00:00Hey guys, it's Lucy Fink.
00:01This week is five days of no trash.
00:05And lucky for me, this week is a special edition.
00:07I have with me Lauren Singer, the guru of no trash, and I have her mason jar.
00:12Three years worth of trash right inside this jar.
00:15Please teach me your ways, tell me how I can get started.
00:19Going zero waste isn't an overnight process.
00:21It takes time, but I'm going to teach you some tips and tricks to get started.
00:25Beginning with Monday.
00:26Take a look at your garbage and see what you're throwing away.
00:29You have to know your garbage, understand your garbage, and kind of become your garbage.
00:34Okay, five days, no trash, got it.
00:36Have I mentioned that I have two roommates and the garbage has been piling up for like five days?
00:41Here's what I found in my garbage can.
00:42Napkins, paper towels, more napkins, more paper towels, food scraps, lots of plastic bags.
00:50Today I really learned that I need to focus on reusable napkins, reusable bags, and not wasting food.
00:57That was literally a lot of shit.
00:59Day two, now that you know what you're throwing away, we can swap out some of that trash for some
01:04zero waste essentials.
01:05No trash essentials.
01:07I have a list of four that I got from Lauren.
01:09Get ready, write these down.
01:11Glass jar, hand it to the barista, have him fill up your coffee.
01:14Reusable silverware, bring that to work instead of using the plastic over and over again.
01:18Reusable napkin.
01:19Everything should be reusable.
01:21Reusable tote bag.
01:23You saw how many plastic bags I had.
01:25I am genuinely ashamed.
01:27Listen, I'm not living an eco-friendly lifestyle right now.
01:30Of this I am aware.
01:31You gotta start somewhere.
01:32Today I'm bringing all these items with me.
01:34I'm gonna put them all in my tote bag.
01:36First stop, a morning coffee.
01:41Today was so cool.
01:43I had the barista fill up this mason jar with iced coffee.
01:46I explained to him what I was doing.
01:47We had a great conversation and I was doing good and I taught him something.
01:52Plus it felt really cool when he was like, one mason jar of coffee.
01:55I was looking around at the other customers and I was like, yeah, that's right.
01:59I saved a cup.
02:00I'm eco-friendly.
02:01Day three, middle of the week, zero waste grocery shopping.
02:05I know it sounds super scary, but I promise you can do it.
02:09All you have to do is plan ahead.
02:11Lauren taught me all about zero trash grocery shopping.
02:14And it's not as hard as it seems, but it does take a lot of preparation.
02:18Typically, I just run into the grocery store if I pass it and I realize, oh, I'm missing
02:22something, I need it.
02:23Shopping zero waste is different.
02:25You need to bring the exact amount of containers for exactly what you want to buy.
02:29Go to a store that offers bulk products.
02:31Bring reusable bags, reusable containers.
02:33If you're gonna get any wet ingredients, you need to bring a glass jar with the top.
02:36Honey, olive oil, syrup.
02:38If you want any grains, nuts, dried foods, you should get reusable bags.
02:42Upcycle.
02:43And look at what I got.
02:45Some real local honey.
02:47Also, some cool conditioner that smells like lavender amazingness.
02:53Amazing.
02:54You've gone three days without making any trash.
02:57You deserve a drink.
02:58And yeah, people that live zero waste still like to have fun.
03:03My biggest fear in going to get my drink was telling the bartender how to prepare it.
03:09I don't want to tell someone how to do their job.
03:10But instead, I had an awesome conversation with the bartender.
03:14I told her what I was doing this week.
03:15She was intrigued.
03:16And I ordered this blue drink.
03:17And I said, please don't bring me any trash that comes inside of this.
03:21No straw, no napkin, no coaster.
03:23The way it normally comes is full of trash.
03:26There's a glow stick in there, monkeys hanging off the side.
03:29There's a straw with all this confetti popping out like a fountain.
03:33Every week when I do these five-day challenges, I learn something.
03:36This week, what I'm learning is that we're all moving so quickly.
03:38And we're just throwing away so much trash.
03:41I think we just have to all freeze for a moment and acknowledge the waste that we,
03:45as individuals, are putting out there into the world.
03:48I think if we all just slow down half a step and take that sword out of our drinks,
03:53everything will be a lot better.
03:55Lucy, you've made it.
03:56Five days and no trash.
03:58Now you have all of the tips and tricks you need to go out and live your life, kid,
04:02with a little less trash.
04:04It's Friday, and this week I have produced zero trash.
04:08I have left no paper trail.
04:10Try and catch me if you can.
04:12You won't be able to.
04:14I know I'm not going to change the world by asking my bartender to bring my drink
04:17with no umbrella and no sword.
04:19But listen, you've got to start somewhere.
04:21I've started right now.
04:22I bought this shirt secondhand.
04:24Lauren told me she bought all of her clothes secondhand, so I copied her.
04:28And as a wise, no trash guru once told me,
04:31be your trash.
04:32Love your trash.
04:34Eat your trash.
04:35She didn't say eat your trash, but if it's still good, eat it.
04:40It was just well.
04:40Good.
04:40Bye.
04:40Bye.
