00:02When was the time to return?
00:05Jaime Esteban never had a problem telling me who he was with, where he was.
00:10We were in contact via WhatsApp all night.
00:13I kept insisting that it was time to return.
00:17He went out with five people, that is, the group was five friends.
00:22And he would return with one, especially one who lived closer.
00:26And I woke my other son up, I told him, no, connect to Jaime Esteban's WhatsApp web.
00:30And get Juan David's phone number, because I didn't have it, we called him.
00:35And so, what one says from the heart, as a mother, and I don't want to ignore it,
00:40He tells me that he was being treated at the Chapinero medical center,
00:43Well, I went crazy, I went there.
00:46And from there it's a real ordeal until six in the afternoon when my son leaves.
00:54My brother is not a sentence, he is mine and it hurts me, because it is him.
00:59No sentence will bring her back to me, nor will it give me peace about her death.
01:04Perhaps regarding the justice that had to be seen, that has to be done, yes,
01:09But regarding his death there is only absence, only pain and darkness.
01:22Exactly one year ago, on October 31, 2025,
01:26Jaime Esteban Moreno, a student at the University of the Andes
01:28He was murdered after leaving a Halloween party at this bar,
01:32The Before Club, located in the town of Chapinero, in northern Bogotá.
01:35Today his case is once again making headlines in the media
01:38following the initial ruling against the two men
01:41who were convicted just two weeks ago for murdering the young student.
01:46The judge in the case, in the first instance, sentenced them to 37 years in prison
01:50for the crime that today commemorates one year since it was perpetrated.
01:53In El Espectador, in addition to reconstructing the events of the crime,
01:55We managed to speak with Jaime Esteban's mother and brother,
01:58those who try to resume their lives after the crime.
02:01In addition, the two of them ask two things of the justice system.
02:04First, that the sentences of those convicted today be increased.
02:06And second, that a woman is captured who, according to the family, was responsible for the murder.
02:12Jaime Esteban was barely 20 years old.
02:14She studied Systems Engineering and was part of the chess team at the University of the Andes.
02:18And on that fateful night he walked these streets with his friends
02:21to celebrate the popular Halloween.
02:24Jaime Esteban was a seventh-semester Systems Engineering student,
02:29chess player, he was part of the school chess team, then of the university.
02:34My boy was quiet.
02:37Jaime was a very focused person with deeply ingrained principles and tastes.
02:47He already knew what to study from eighth grade.
02:50He said, no, I want to study Systems Engineering.
02:54Jaime comes to Santa Fe because my grandfather is from Santa Fe.
02:57So, in the midst of all that, he ended up liking it a lot.
03:03So he got involved and liked it, and he used to watch all of Santa Fe's games.
03:09How were we that day?
03:12He was organizing his costume in his classes.
03:15He was coming off a semester with a lot of work and a lot of responsibility,
03:21I'm spending a lot of sleepless nights because of the issue of submitting assignments.
03:24On the night of October 30, 2025, Jaime Esteban Moreno arrived here at FIFA Club.
03:29located on Caracas Avenue, between 63rd and 64th Streets, to celebrate Halloween.
03:34According to the Prosecutor's investigation, an argument took place with this woman at the establishment.
03:38Paola Fernández, who was accompanied by the two men who killed him minutes later,
03:43Suárez Ortiz, 27, and González Castro, 23.
03:46So he already has his patch, he had his friends, I said of course, well, no problem.
03:52I'm going to my party and stuff, my dad is picking me up, I tell him to pick me up,
03:59And my brother, well, I say no, because I'm going in numbers, he doesn't like to worry my parents.
04:04And then we lost contact around 3 in the morning, when she told me I was going out to
04:09find the car,
04:11And then I didn't hear anything more, his cell phone died, that motherly feeling,
04:16I became desperate after 3:30 in the morning.
04:20According to the prosecution, minutes earlier, the first attack occurred near this Oxxo.
04:25which is located near Before Club.
04:28There, Jaime fell to the ground and his friend tried to stop the blows of his assassins,
04:32causing the two attackers to retreat.
04:35But there, as is known, it didn't all end, because the crime occurred one block further down.
04:42According to the prosecution's reconstruction, the two assailants returned minutes later.
04:45And at this point they attacked Jaime Esteban again, one block further down from the first place of the events.
04:5545 minutes after the attack, Jaime Esteban was transported in a police patrol car to this point,
05:01Chapinero Hospital, which is located just two blocks from the scene of the events.
05:06Here, the medical team found serious injuries to his skull, face, and chest.
05:10Subsequently, and with a rather complex clinical picture,
05:13Jaime Esteban Moreno was urgently transferred to the Simón Bolívar Hospital, in the town of Usaquén,
05:18where doctors confirmed his death hours later.
05:20And from that moment on, another story began.
05:22that of a family trying to understand what had happened,
05:25and that of an investigation by the Prosecutor's Office that was to establish who was responsible for the murder.
05:36Juan Carlos Ortiz was caught in the act on the same morning as the crime.
05:39On October 31, 2025, during the initial police operations in Bogotá.
05:44While Ricardo Rafael González Castro surrendered to the authorities on November 10, 2025,
05:49at the Prosecutor's Office facilities in Cartagena,
05:51after having fled to that city and after an arrest warrant had been issued against him days earlier.
05:57That these people suddenly come out and apologize.
06:01Right now I don't even think about it for myself anymore, because I have to bear my burden through this ordeal.
06:06And I have to do everything.
06:07Rather, it is a social pardon, that is, this is something that shocked more than one person.
06:13People recognize me in the street, grab my hand, and cry, saying they're sorry.
06:18a lot.
06:18And I feel that's the least we can do for such a horrifying act, to say the least.
06:24There's no way to degrade that because it's horrible; it's some very intense videos.
06:33Well, it's an act that left its mark on Bogotá.
06:44On October 19, 2026, a few days before the first anniversary of his death,
06:49The judge declared Suárez Ortiz and González Castro responsible for the murder of Jaime Esteban Moreno.
06:54Furthermore, the Moreno family's lawyer says,
06:56They have already requested the Prosecutor's Office to prosecute Paola Fernández in absentia.
07:01who is currently a fugitive from justice.
07:03Therefore, the legal process still has chapters to be written.
07:07That does not mean, as I stated to the judge,
07:10that I was going to file my appeal as the representative of the victims,
07:16specifically and exclusively regarding the punitive quantity,
07:20so that the Superior Court of Bogotá in the criminal chamber
07:24increase precisely because of solid arguments,
07:30due to the development of the trial,
07:32which, I repeat, beyond all reasonable doubt,
07:35The intentional homicide was fully proven.
07:40I wish we could close today and, I don't know,
07:45to dedicate myself to remembering my son.
07:47Because there are many mothers who go through the years without receiving any sentence,
07:51no sign of justice,
07:54for the people who could have taken the lives of their children.
07:57I wish this wouldn't happen in the country.
08:00So, then, we are left to walk in that respectful manner,
08:04as we have always done with institutions,
08:07to continue and complete that process of full justice in memory of my son.
08:16Thank you!
08:18Thank you!
08:21Thank you!
08:22Thank you!
08:23Thank you!
08:23Thank you!
08:24Thank you!
