00:00Halloween, Hallows Eve, I don't know.
00:05I don't know what that is, because I'm a Baptist.
00:07I'm a Christian, and we just don't do that.
00:09I was never, never allowed to celebrate Halloween,
00:13because it was of the devil, apparently.
00:15I did not get to celebrate Halloween,
00:18and I'm still very bitter about it.
00:22Halloween, I love Halloween.
00:24People hate it, though.
00:25People hate it.
00:26Like, at my church, they would be like,
00:27your mom let you celebrate Halloween.
00:29It's the devil's holiday.
00:31What does the devil's holiday even mean?
00:34Like, please let me know in the comments,
00:35because did the devil come up out of the pits of hell,
00:40and this is my day of celebration.
00:43This is the day that everyone will bow down to me,
00:47and dress up like Disney princesses.
00:49I was jealous as hell of all of my friends,
00:52because they would all be like,
00:53oh, my mom's gonna pick me up, you know,
00:54on trick-or-treating, like, straight from school.
00:56For sure, my mom was not gonna let me, like,
00:58go get candy from some men.
01:00She said that we were begging for candy,
01:02and we were not beggars.
01:03Trick-or-treating was like,
01:05we can go, but you can't eat this candy.
01:08Don't touch it.
01:09Leave it in the bucket,
01:11and then when we get home,
01:13you can have all this candy I bought for you.
01:15And my church had something,
01:16which I'm sure plenty of other churches also had,
01:18called Hallelujah Night.
01:20The church Halloween parties were really strange,
01:22looking back on it.
01:23Hallelujah Night, Spirit Night, Praise Night,
01:27whatever you want to call it.
01:28It was always extra weird.
01:29They tried to, like, describe it as like a harvest festival.
01:33I knew it was gonna be lame,
01:34and I'd rather just stay home and watch movies.
01:37So at Hallelujah Night,
01:38you were allowed to dress up as any biblical character
01:41or any African-American historical figure.
01:43And one year, me and one of my homeworlds
01:45dressed up as Serena and Vinious Williams.
01:47We had the match and fix,
01:48we had the tennis rackets, and I won $5.
01:50I could never have been a goblin or, like, a ghost.
01:54Like, I could never be like,
01:55Mom, I'm finna go outside as a vampire.
01:57She'd be like, no, you're not.
01:59That's devilish.
02:00That's some devilish .
02:01I always wanted to dress up as a witch,
02:03but that was never not from my mom.
02:05She was only going to get Harry Potter books.
02:06How was I ever going to dress up as a witch?
02:08I always wanted to be a Disney princess.
02:10Kids don't really understand, like,
02:12whatever's so pagan about it or so devilish about it.
02:15It's more so about, like, dressing up.
02:18Every little black girl wanted to be Princess Tiana
02:20when it came out.
02:21Everyone this year is probably going to want to be Shuri.
02:23Shit, I want to be Princess Shuri.
02:25I would love a Shuri costume.
02:27I don't think my parents overreacted
02:28about their views on Halloween.
02:29I do think that there's something to be said
02:31for being so extreme about everything.
02:33I think my mom was definitely overreacting.
02:35She put a lot of, like, roadblocks in my life.
02:37I feel that I felt like we're rites of passages as children,
02:44but I respect her decision because she's my mommy.
02:47Are you going to let your kids in?
02:49So they help me.
02:50Oh, yeah, we going in.
02:51Like, me and my kids are, like, going in.
02:54I'm not going to have my kids feeling left out like I did.
02:56And you know what?
02:57I'm going trick-or-treating with my kids
02:58because I never got to do it.
02:59So I'm going to be out there with my bag of pumpkins,
03:01and I'm going to be like, knock, knock, trick-or-treat.
03:03Let's get my candy going, too.
03:04I probably would let my kids celebrate Halloween.
03:06I see myself being a little bit of, like, a hippie mom,
03:08where I'm like, wherever your energy takes you, baby.
03:10Like, whatever you feel like doing.
03:12I'll let my kids celebrate Halloween,
03:14but I think I'm also the parent who's
03:16following their kid in the car a couple steps behind them.
03:19Happy 31st, y'all.
03:20Stay safe, stay blessed, and stay spooky.
03:22Have a happy Halloween.
03:25Happy Halloween.
03:26Eat a lot of candy.
