00:00:05Welcome to the 2026 Skate Canada International this is
00:00:13all right we are back we are back just the two of us we've ditched Ted Ted was like you
00:00:22all do
00:00:23this yourself I'm gonna go back and take a nap he no he's well he wishes he has many other
00:00:29things
00:00:29there's a friends and family event tonight being hosted by Skate Canada and Ted and his lovely wife
00:00:35DM are hosting it aren't we friends and family aren't we friends we're not friends nor are we
00:00:43apparently not all right the men what an exciting group this one is we have no idea what these men
00:00:59are going to bring this week but it's always intriguing sometimes the men don't even know
00:01:05what the men are going to bring this week I don't think they do no so David Bondar who is
00:01:12an up-and-coming
00:01:14young skater from Canada his Grand Prix debut Wesley Chu who's made a coaching change this summer to
00:01:24Canadian champions here yes Steven Gogolev who had an incredible season last year
00:01:32Genrik Gartung Ryo Nakata another junior moving up and Kazuki Tomono so yeah we're gonna we're gonna
00:01:41see we're gonna see a couple of skaters bring us to the club today happy the Japanese guys
00:01:53found there was some inconsistencies with the Japanese men last year they yes
00:02:01I mean there's inconsistency with the men period and the Japanese guys have been interesting over
00:02:07the last few seasons is that that because because of that because there's just this like
00:02:15lack of a and a real understanding of who's gonna show up at what competition but again I can say
00:02:23that
00:02:23about basically all the men it's it's it's you really don't know what you're gonna get with these
00:02:29guys well and I feel like the Japanese men do better when there is a clear-cut top male and
00:02:37they're all gunning for that you know interesting whereas when there's not and that it's open for
00:02:42any of them there's a little bit more frantic of right now there isn't no right because Yuma
00:02:48Nakagiyama is taking the season off and so who is the top Japanese guy right now based on what we
00:02:56saw
00:02:56last week it's probably right now Kao Miura but we have Ryo Nakata here and he he could very well
00:03:06be
00:03:06filling that slot and he he's you know of all the juniors coming to seniors he's he's like I've been
00:03:14ready for seniors for years which was with my Shimano yeah get me on this ice I saw Ryo yesterday
00:03:31actually at the supermarket and I was like are you ready he's like yeah like you're hope it's ready
00:03:45always there's actually a good crowd for the practice there is there is really nice probably
00:03:52like 150 people here at least at least yeah
00:04:04what was your what was your highlight moment last year from the men did you have one for the men
00:04:10for
00:04:10the men I think Yuma Kagiyama's free skate at the at the world championships that was just it was that
00:04:19program is so grand and he finally skated it to his potential and at the right time everything
00:04:27and Ilya Molinan at the Grand Prix final like you just the the technical prowess of that program is
00:04:36just like unheard of by yours oh told you I'm not answering any questions for you or yeah I don't
00:04:49know
00:04:52Ilya for sure um I have to say as a Canadian and having watched Stephen over the years with all
00:05:04the
00:05:04potential but just not yep and and in fact many of our men watching him have a breakout year where
00:05:12it just all worked because I remember Stephen as the Capri novice men were it was untouchable and couldn't miss
00:05:20and it was just so nice to see that back
00:05:22and that confidence build through the season yeah and like finally right like you you you you've seen seen him
00:05:31as such a super talent with such great potential and he just gets injured and injured and injured and
00:05:39finally he has a season where he is healthy and he does what you'd expect him to do
00:05:48no follow it up yeah yeah and he's he's upgrading here this year too he's got he's gonna quad let's
00:05:56in both programs now
00:06:03he's another person who's a man of few words yes yeah I was talking to him at the Olympics and
00:06:11it was like
00:06:15like what questions are you gonna ask me this time
00:06:22one word answers yes Wesley Chu we're seeing on the screen right now he's he's such I I've always really
00:06:33liked his skating
00:06:36and he's he was one of those again last year the complete wrong timing of getting injured and
00:06:46he made a valiant effort to try to make it to the Olympic team
00:06:50and just never didn't work out
00:06:53it was sort of the the the freight train of Stephen Gogolev I don't think anybody was getting past that
00:06:58no
00:07:02starting with some Game of Thrones
00:07:28well I wondered how much jumping we were gonna see in his program skating first but I
00:07:33yeah he he warmed up all of his triples before this so
00:07:40let's mark that toe
00:07:50interesting that he did he did triple let's triple toe in
00:07:56the warm up earlier and I think that's probably a backup combination to the quad to triple toe that he
00:08:03was
00:08:29certainly a different kind of theatrics than we would pull we just saw in the
00:08:32nice dance event
00:08:34these guys are all business with their jumps
00:08:37their jumps
00:08:44yes and nobody's wearing their competition outfits oh I mean they're wearing they're
00:08:49wearing the men's special which is black on black
00:08:52on black on black everything's on black except for Wesley
00:09:07I do miss seeing from where we're sitting we can't I can't see the coaches
00:09:10the coaches and I do like watching coaches during practice
00:09:38so
00:09:39so far of the the competitions that you've seen
00:09:43there's a triple let's triple toe there it is
00:09:48who has stood out for you anybody so far early in the season for the men yeah
00:09:54Rio has for sure
00:09:57um the the Russian guys who've gotten back on to the Grand Prix
00:10:02uh the or sorry on to to international competition um
00:10:07to Kitschi has been the one who's been the standout I mean my my favorite of the Russian guys right
00:10:14now
00:10:14is Yevgeny Semenenko and he he he has been really good on on the international circuit
00:10:24but last week um Adam Xiaohin Fa was incredible
00:10:39when he is on he's like a train like he just builds and builds in a program when he
00:10:46when it's working he's one of the artistic um skaters of this generation for for me like just able to
00:10:56to
00:10:56skate to a lot of different types of music and do it really well
00:11:10to be able to make a big difference for me like it's the one that you've seen in the world
00:11:10and I'm so happy and I'm happy to have a big difference here
00:11:17it's a big difference here
00:11:18it's a big difference here
00:11:29is
00:11:30it's a big difference here
00:11:30Ryan Orser effect has been for Wesley.
00:12:23He's always had this effortlessness of footwork for, like, just the way that he moves.
00:12:29And you can see that here in this program.
00:12:48And effortlessness, Patrick Chan.
00:12:54Yes.
00:12:55I don't think anybody glided and moved with feet like that.
00:13:00That's the epitome to get to, to me, for skating skills.
00:13:05An impossible standard, I would say.
00:14:53You know, it's not, it's interesting Wesley's move to Brian.
00:14:59I mean, not surprising really, I guess.
00:15:01And don't forget, Tracy does a lot of work with the skaters and some great work.
00:15:07She's such a great person, but, you know, up, bending your life and moving to new cities,
00:15:14new countries sometimes for these people, and then adjusting to new philosophies, styles,
00:15:20there's, I think, a honeymoon period sometimes that you have to wait till that is...
00:15:25Yeah.
00:15:26Well, especially given this point in his career, too.
00:15:29Like, it's not like he's a new senior.
00:15:31Like, he's been around for a while.
00:15:34Mind you, the timing with after the injury and looking for a fresh start, timing is good,
00:15:39but, yeah.
00:15:42All right.
00:15:43Here's Gogo.
00:15:45Free Skate.
00:15:51We have not seen this program yet.
00:15:53We just saw the short program earlier.
00:15:55That's right.
00:16:04Moulin Rouge, if you will.
00:16:24That quad lutz.
00:16:28There it is.
00:16:29Nice.
00:16:32Yes.
00:16:36Yeah.
00:16:39I am a boy.
00:16:46Make it common.
00:17:21I'm also curious to see what his artistic development has been like this season as well.
00:17:27Because I think Benoit, his choreography has been really good for him.
00:17:33I think he knows how he works.
00:17:35Yes.
00:17:36And he's been able to bring out, you know, we were talking about how he's a man of few words.
00:17:41He's a bit of an introvert, right?
00:17:44And I think he's been able to bring out some of that presence for him.
00:17:48Well, I also recall Stephen's done, been really focused or doing a concentrated focus on his skating skills and his
00:17:56skating.
00:17:57And improving that.
00:18:12I'm guessing we're finishing with the step sequence.
00:18:17That was a long mark.
00:18:32Second half, Quad Sao.
00:18:41I like the way he's moving with these patterns.
00:18:46Flip.
00:18:48Triple Axel.
00:18:49Yep.
00:18:50Ah!
00:18:51Half-loop, triple Sao.
00:18:54Big combo.
00:18:55Quick.
00:18:56Big combo.
00:18:57He just seems to have grown more and more comfortable.
00:19:02Wow.
00:19:04So, Quad Sao and two triple Axels in the second half.
00:19:44Even from up here, he feels more present, and, you know, the eyes are at audience level.
00:19:53It's not on the ice.
00:19:55But I also feel like he's filling the ice and the bowl.
00:19:59Like, his movements are...
00:20:01He's tall.
00:20:02He's got long arms and legs, but he's using it.
00:20:06He's pulling it and stretching it.
00:20:12We didn't see half of the program as we marked it, but I think this is a really good...
00:20:17We saw kind of the beginning and kind of the end, and I know there's a whole bunch in the
00:20:21middle.
00:20:40The infiltration of Depeche Mode into figure skating.
00:21:10We saw a bit of a miss.
00:21:12He has a tendency to pop.
00:21:17He starts with a quad lutz and a quad flip.
00:21:24So that's what you're going to see here.
00:21:33Triple H, Triple Toe.
00:22:37A back crossover trip.
00:23:51I like this program on him.
00:23:52I think he actually, he likes skating to his music, which always helps.
00:24:01You know, when you pick music and pick a program, you have to be prepared to listen to it a
00:24:07lot.
00:24:07Oh, yeah.
00:24:08A lot.
00:24:09And oftentimes, I know when skaters are picking music and different things, you listen to it in an arena because
00:24:15it'll sound different than it does in your room or on headphones.
00:24:19And you really do have to like listening to it.
00:24:22Yeah.
00:24:23You can't be sick of the music you're skating to.
00:24:25No.
00:24:27Which sometimes makes me question their choice of music.
00:24:35I think it's good growth for Genric.
00:24:38He's always been known to be a jumper.
00:24:40And I think some of the musicality of this program is a good step for him.
00:24:56And on the side, Steven Gogolev is already doing spins.
00:25:00Well, he's already with that.
00:25:01Yeah, he's done everything that he needed to do already.
00:25:28Just watch these jumps.
00:25:31My goodness.
00:25:34So far, he's been very on in this practice.
00:25:41Plot sound, triple toe.
00:25:42Easy.
00:26:20There's one thing that really doesn't have to do.
00:26:33There's one thing that really doesn't have to do.
00:26:34Ryo Nakata is not afraid of is taking the mantle for the top spot.
00:26:40I think he's ready for it.
00:26:43And he expects it of himself.
00:26:45That's a clean short.
00:26:56There's nothing wrong with that.
00:27:02I did a next-gen camp and interviewed a lot of the skaters.
00:27:06And I'd say, you know, what's your goals or aspirations for the season?
00:27:10Oh, we just want to have a good season.
00:27:12And I'm like, oh, finally somebody said, we want to win.
00:27:16Yeah.
00:27:16I want to skate my best.
00:27:18Yeah.
00:27:19I want to have some fun out there.
00:27:22And some of that is obfuscation, right?
00:27:24Like, you don't want to put that pressure on yourself to be like, I want to win.
00:27:27And then you don't.
00:27:28But I love the people who do.
00:27:30I do.
00:27:31And Rio is certainly one of those.
00:27:34I mean, any time he makes a mistake, it's like, he's like, I'm disappointed in you, Rio.
00:27:40That's what he's saying to himself.
00:27:49Now, Rio is not nearly as tall as Steven is, but he is also filling the ice.
00:27:54Yeah.
00:27:54I mean, there's so much to be said about the Japanese school of skating skills, right?
00:28:03Like, that all, so many of these skaters from Japan, from the very beginning of their careers,
00:28:11are drilled with ice coverage.
00:28:14Like, that's what you see there.
00:28:16Mm-hmm.
00:28:16I was wrong about two skaters bringing us to the club because Kazuki is not here.
00:28:30He will get a chance to be on the ice tomorrow for practice before the men's short program.
00:28:54Yes, tomorrow we start the day with practices.
00:28:56As always.
00:28:57For all, for all the disciplines, as always.
00:28:59We love it.
00:28:59And then the men's and pairs competition tomorrow night.
00:29:03And then also going on around here is, there's a fan fest.
00:29:08Ooh.
00:29:08So they've all got all sorts of activities and different things where you can just come down and hang out
00:29:12and be part of the excitement around the rink.
00:29:17And then Saturday is Halloween.
00:29:20So I hope you brought a costume.
00:29:22I certainly didn't.
00:29:26Lucky for you, you've got two days to find one.
00:29:29And if you need help with that, I'll bring one for you.
00:29:32I just, I need to find a moose head.
00:29:34Like that, I'll be a moose.
00:29:36The moose that I don't see from Halifax.
00:29:38The moose that you, okay.
00:29:40Okay.
00:29:42Okay.
00:29:47That's what I miss.
00:29:48I like seeing the coach and the skater attraction.
00:29:50Yeah, as the coach is.
00:29:54Wesley's had some good jumps here outside of what we saw in his run-through.
00:29:59I saw a couple of landed quad toes.
00:30:02That's nice.
00:30:06Rio's got to be very happy with this practice.
00:30:09First one out, he was doing some quad loops, too.
00:30:13There were a couple of landed ones.
00:30:16And a clean, short run-through.
00:30:17Like, you can't get better than that in your first practice.
00:30:30I feel like Benoit and Steven have a language.
00:30:33Yes, they do.
00:30:33They don't even say a lot of words, but no.
00:30:38Benoit seems to have been very good for just his confidence.
00:30:46Like, there's a certain amount of belief that we've seen from Steven that we haven't seen over the past few
00:30:51years.
00:30:52And, again, a lot because he's been injured.
00:30:55But there's just, he looks like a different person than what we've seen.
00:30:59Yeah.
00:31:27I will say it's been
00:31:29it's been surprising
00:31:30to see Steven's
00:31:33renaissance
00:31:34I mean we called it
00:31:35the go-go-leva-sons
00:31:36last year
00:31:37but
00:31:38you know just the fact
00:31:39that he was
00:31:40he was a
00:31:41such a phenom
00:31:42when he was a kid
00:31:43and then he grew
00:31:44like five feet
00:31:46and then he
00:31:47he lost his jumps
00:31:48and then he got injured
00:31:50and then he got
00:31:50all his jumps back
00:31:51like that
00:31:52that kind of
00:31:53trajectory does not
00:31:54happen
00:31:55in figure skating
00:31:56no
00:31:57it's like you grow
00:31:58and you're
00:31:58you lose your jumps
00:31:59and you're kind of done
00:32:00usually
00:32:00well it's the perseverance
00:32:02of after you've grown
00:32:04to relearn your body
00:32:05yeah
00:32:05and relearn your timing
00:32:07and most people
00:32:10don't have the patience
00:32:11for that
00:32:11but it's
00:32:13yeah
00:32:13it's so refreshing
00:32:15to see that he stuck
00:32:17with it
00:32:17and he had to have
00:32:18believed
00:32:18that he was
00:32:20had that ability
00:32:20I mean he
00:32:21he was saying last year
00:32:22at the Olympics
00:32:23that
00:32:23there were
00:32:24there were
00:32:25a number of times
00:32:26when he was like
00:32:27do I just give up
00:32:28because it's just
00:32:29it was such a frustrating
00:32:30few years for him
00:32:32another quad sale
00:32:34from Rio Nakata
00:32:35like
00:32:35oof
00:32:36these are just automatic
00:32:37go
00:32:37like
00:32:38down
00:32:38there
00:32:39like
00:32:40make
00:32:40этим
00:32:41too
00:32:53I can't
00:32:56know
00:32:56I can't
00:32:58wait
00:32:59there
00:32:59no
00:33:01I'm
00:33:02fine
00:33:25The activity is dying down out there.
00:33:28And the guys are like, let's go.
00:33:30Well, and I was just, you know, a lot of...
00:33:31Let's take a break.
00:33:31These skaters have a training day where it'll be on ice, off ice, another on ice, like several
00:33:37hours of training in a day.
00:33:38Then you get to an event and you have your one on ice and you do your off ice stuff.
00:33:44And then it's a lot of day to fill.
00:33:45Yeah.
00:33:46I mean, luckily it's a beautiful place and we're close to downtown, but it's a whole different
00:33:51routine.
00:33:51But I mean, they compete enough that they've got their routine and they know what to do,
00:33:56I hope.
00:33:59But this is it.
00:34:00I mean...
00:34:00This is your one ice time today.
00:34:01Which was such a thing last week in France when there were the protests and demonstrations
00:34:09and stuff that made a lot of the skaters have to stay in the rink the entire day.
00:34:15So it disrupted their usual routine.
00:34:20So it was interesting to watch that last day because those were all the skaters that were
00:34:26affected and the men were sort of all over the place.
00:34:28The pears even were a bit all over the place.
00:34:33So...
00:34:34And the scene outside, was that?
00:34:37I don't know.
00:34:38I don't know.
00:34:39I don't think it was actually where they were at the rink, but it was where their hotel was.
00:34:47And so they couldn't get back to their hotel.
00:34:50Wow.
00:34:50Yeah.
00:34:52Yeah.
00:34:53Like, never underestimate the power of routine.
00:34:56Because all of these skaters are regimented, right?
00:34:59They know when to do what and they have set times to recover.
00:35:04And if you're outside of that, it just really changes it.
00:35:26Well, and you have to be prepared for anything that happens.
00:35:28Something happens in your late getting to the rink for your event or your practice or flight
00:35:37disruptions.
00:35:38Yeah.
00:35:38Skaters arriving without skates.
00:35:40Without skates, yeah.
00:35:45Well, good practice for some of these guys.
00:35:48Steven and Rio both had really solid first day of practice.
00:35:56They'll certainly be fighting for gold.
00:36:04And like we said at the beginning, we have no idea what these men are going to do.
00:36:09And we also talked about how practice is different than competition.
00:36:13You can win the practices, but I know, and you have too, you've seen practices where skaters
00:36:19look amazing and go do nothing.
00:36:21Or skaters are the other way around.
00:36:22Absolutely.
00:36:40And then even going from the short program to the free program at this time of year, it's a big
00:36:47step.
00:37:01Down to the final spins.
00:37:12Yeah, usually if you're new to watching practices, usually when skaters start spinning, you know they're cooling down.
00:37:19They're winding down.
00:37:21Spins and step sequences.
00:37:23And for pears stroking.
00:37:25And for pears stroking.
00:37:26Yeah.
00:37:27Or for pears when they start breaking off into doing their own thing.
00:37:32Yeah.
00:37:32Yeah.
00:37:36Yeah.
00:37:49Yeah.
00:37:50the pressure we made before
00:37:54and I want to be a man
00:37:57I love you
00:37:58that's how I can go
00:38:00I can't stand to go
00:38:02let me go
00:38:05and I can't live
00:38:07I can't live
00:38:07I can't live
00:38:22And in the country, there's a city that makes sense, but there's a heart in town near the
00:38:28territory of the George Floyd's community, but that's the best song for the band.
00:38:36They can't wait to see with me, music and smoke, but nowhere I'm down for a photo of the
00:38:52field. Ryo looks like he just does not want to get off the ice. No, he does not. If he
00:38:56could skate all day, he would.
00:39:10There's a lot of just feeling the ice right now. Ryo's literally just going down doing a one-foot drill.
00:39:26And Wesley Chu with the Brian Orser special. They always finish their practices with some kind of
00:39:36drill of something, whatever it is.
00:39:47And Wesley taking the last bow.
00:39:56Curious to see his trajectory this season. With the new coach, with not being injured.
00:40:02Like, I think that's...
00:40:10Alright, last group. Last group.
00:40:25And what a completely unpredictable group of skaters this is going to be.
00:40:35I mean, skaters who could give you fantastic programs, or they could give you a complete
00:40:44you have no idea what's going on program. And we're also missing one. Who are we missing?
00:40:59There's Kevin, there's Mikhail, there's Georgi, Kirilo, and Hung-Yom. Liam, I saw Liam earlier.
00:41:08I saw him earlier as well.
00:41:20Liam is not on the ice. He's definitely here.
00:41:31That's curious.
00:41:33Yeah.
00:41:42So you see Kevin Amos, one of those who could very well be...
00:41:47He could be on the podium, or he could be completely off the podium.
00:41:50We talked about this earlier in the broadcast.
00:41:54He was, last year, 10th at Skate Canada, and then he won Skate America.
00:41:59So, that's the kind of rollercoaster kind of result that he could have.
00:42:07And he's had a late start to his season.
00:42:12Georgi Reshtenko, European bronze medalist.
00:42:17But, you know, his jumps when he lands them are phenomenal.
00:42:22And then, when he doesn't, it's, you know, he's kind of all over the place.
00:42:33Which is many of the men.
00:42:34Which is many of the men, yes, yes. I don't disagree with that.
00:42:48I have to do some investigating tonight on Liam, because that's odd.
00:42:55I think his
00:43:02And then we're gone.
00:43:09We errored.
00:43:13Moving on!
00:43:41Kevin Amos just doing edge drills for this warm-up.
00:43:45It's beautiful watching him on the ice.
00:44:34All right, Liam is out there.
00:44:36He is.
00:44:40Liam has entered the ice.
00:45:08I see Kirill Marsak here.
00:45:11He's a great talent that just started to come into his own,
00:45:17both with the technical and with the artistic.
00:45:19Here we go.
00:45:39Here we go.
00:45:41Here we go.
00:45:41Here we go.
00:45:48Here we go.
00:45:50Here we go.
00:45:51Here we go.
00:46:01Here we go.
00:46:24Here we go.
00:46:26Here we go with the final group of men on the men's practice.
00:46:49Here we go.
00:47:10Here we go.
00:47:14Here we go with the quad toe and we're going to see the triple axle.
00:47:18It's interesting watching some skaters whipping off quads and some still doing edge exercises.
00:47:22Yeah.
00:47:26Different plans.
00:47:28Yeah.
00:47:29No triple axle.
00:47:31Marks that one too.
00:47:32Here we go.
00:47:35Here we go.
00:47:50Here we go.
00:48:00Here we go.
00:48:01I feel like Elvis is making a comeback in figure skating.
00:48:07I don't think he was ever here.
00:48:09I guess maybe he's newly in figure skating.
00:48:16Nope.
00:48:17We're marking everything.
00:48:18We're marking everything.
00:48:25We're marking everything.
00:48:28I don't think Elvis is necessarily easy to do.
00:48:31No.
00:48:32Because he's such a character that if you don't bring that character, but if you do, there's
00:48:36such a risk of overdoing it.
00:48:45it I think this this step sequence is really good for him it's got character
00:48:52it's got it's it's actually got ice coverage and movement which sometimes
00:48:58when you do when you do step sequences with pop music they can be a little bit
00:49:05stilted and I don't see that here no I think it's where he's brought great
00:49:12character into the program with that
00:49:22could be a whole different program with jumps but we'll see
00:49:43okay I will say Mikhail Selevko is going to be one of the wild cards here
00:49:51such a great quirky all-around artistic technical skater
00:49:59the jumps are where you're gonna have the most issue but he's he's been a lot
00:50:04better this season with his consistency
00:50:09let's see what he's got
00:50:17flat toe triple toe
00:50:20that looked easy it was
00:50:30it's so interesting because his brother Alexander Selevko he the two of them
00:50:36could not be any different in the way that they skate and the program that they
00:50:41choose like just very different kinds of skaters that's the kind of thing that he
00:50:46has trouble with like a pop yeah yeah you're either gonna see him do a quad or
00:50:52you're gonna see him do a single like it's it's yeah it's a thing that has
00:50:56plagued him for years now about his brother same thing really yeah same thing now
00:51:02they brothers are they twins are they no he was he skated last week at at at
00:51:08Grand Prix de France and he popped multiple quads into triples or doubles
00:51:16triple axel
00:51:25but artistically there's such different skaters it's very interesting
00:51:43this is one of my favorite programs of this early season so far it is he just works it so
00:51:49well
00:52:12there are 42
00:52:16there are 43

00:53:01This free skate, I saw them warm up
00:53:04Sal and Toe
00:53:06triples, so I don't think we're going to see too much in terms of
00:53:10technical content here, a lot of Mark stuff I'm sure.

00:54:39well so far
00:54:54I like the quietness
00:54:55of this program for him
00:54:57it shows off his edge work a lot
00:55:01I think that was something that
00:55:03he went with Bolero last season
00:55:05last two seasons I think
00:55:07and
00:55:09it was a
00:55:10that
00:55:12that program
00:55:15was a bit busy
00:55:18because it was Bolero
00:55:21which you would not use
00:55:22which I would not use
00:55:23but I think this
00:55:25that's a beautiful choreographic spin
00:55:27so nice
00:55:33I just
00:55:34I think this
00:55:34this
00:55:35both of the programs that he has this season
00:55:37are not
00:55:38super outside the box for him
00:55:40but they're far enough outside
00:55:42that it pushes him artistically
00:55:44more so I think Pirates
00:55:45than this program
00:55:47but it
00:55:49it's a different look
00:55:57is there
00:55:57and
00:57:30You didn't actually feel it, but it was, all of a sudden, it built.
00:58:13That quad toe is probably one of the best ones that I've seen him do.
00:58:19He has a history of Qs and unders on that quad toe, and that one looked as clean as I
00:58:27have
00:58:27seen it.
00:58:32One more.
00:58:36Hey, that one looked maybe a little under, but not bad.
00:59:59One thing you see with him that I don't think you see as well on the livestream is just how
01:00:07different his ability to have power is different than the rest of the guys here.
01:00:18I think he's just, you can tell the lack of ice coverage for him versus everybody else who's skating
01:00:25a lot more fully to the ice.
01:00:29And you can see that here, like the axle that he's going into.
01:00:36It's...
01:00:37That was a little...
01:00:38There wasn't much going into it.
01:00:42No.
01:00:42You knew that was...
01:00:45But see, like that triple Lutz was very different, right?
01:00:48The setup and the entrance is just the comfort with that axle is not there, but the comfort
01:00:54with the Lutz and the flip are perfectly fine.
01:01:00But I think if all the jumps, the axle is the one that if it's going to give a skater
01:01:08difficulty
01:01:09or they're most uncomfortable with, it's usually the axle.
01:01:13Who really likes a Ford outside edge?
01:01:16I don't.
01:01:21But see, now he's like...
01:01:24It's like we just found a different skater.
01:01:26The way that he's pushing now versus the way that he was pushing the rest of the program is so
01:01:35different.
01:01:35And I always love his step sequences and his choreograph sequences
01:01:39because he really skates full out in these programs
01:01:44versus when you're seeing him doing jumps, it's like a different skater is doing this program.
01:01:50And hopefully that will develop over time and you'll get comfortable with that and do it.
01:01:54And then also, Junwacha stepping out for the season and getting thrust into the number one spot,
01:02:01there's expectations on you too.
01:02:03Yeah, for sure.
01:02:13Big deep breath.
01:02:19You want some big jumps?
01:02:20So you got some big jumps at this guy.
01:02:34And we start with the quad lutz.
01:02:42Boom!
01:02:43Boom!
01:02:44I was about to say.
01:02:46Almost.
01:02:47He jumped out of the frame.
01:02:49Yeah.
01:03:07See, that has been his problem all season.
01:03:10He rotates the lutz and he pops the sal, or he pops the lutz and he rotates the sal.
01:03:17Wow, he is not being able to put those two together.
01:03:30Well, and that's when we talk about with the choreographers,
01:03:33at what point you start changing the entrance to the jumps or altering the order of them.
01:03:38Yeah.
01:03:43Look at that axle.
01:03:45Beautiful landing position.
01:03:51I can't disaggregate this song from Ilia Molina and Free Skate a few years ago.
01:03:56I know.
01:03:56Yeah, I know.
01:03:58I know.
01:04:00I don't know when or how to pay.
01:04:07I know I know I know I know I know I know.
01:04:33Hey, triple that stuff, triple axle.
01:05:11Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
01:05:25Oh, oh, oh, oh.
01:05:44Oh, oh, oh, oh.
01:05:48Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
01:06:02Oh, oh, oh, oh.
01:06:21do you feel men are more musical now than before well when before well just over
01:06:32i don't know the last 10 years so i think compared to the 90s and 2000s yes i i still
01:06:45think the golden
01:06:46era was the mid 2010s mid to late 2010s where i felt like all the guys had had different and
01:06:55very
01:06:55interesting artistic points of view it's spilled on to this this generation as well but i do think
01:07:02that there has become much more of the like there are a lot of these skaters who are doing sort
01:07:07of
01:07:07this like emo angsty thing and that that's become something of the men's norm
01:07:17kind of like when there was a point when all the women were doing these like lyrical piano pieces
01:07:25and i do
01:07:38ah
01:07:39is
01:08:02I mean, this piece that Liam is gating to is a little bit of an example of that.
01:08:07It's not quite emo, but it's sort of like the pop-ish male vocal feeling.
01:08:37Yeah, skating over the decades and the highlights of what was in fashion at the time or what the trends
01:08:46were at the time.
01:08:47I mean, there was a time when it was all like epic movie soundtracks.
01:08:52Yes.
01:09:16Hold, hold, hold.
01:09:20Hold, hold, sour flip, sour flip.
01:09:23Hold, hold, hold, hold.
01:09:38Hold, hold, hold, hold.
01:09:41Liam's got a really good flow to his skating, especially when he kind of lets loose.
01:09:49That's one thing that I've always appreciated about just generally how he skates.
01:09:56For so many skaters too, I love watching when they've kind of gotten all the elements tick, tick, tick done
01:10:02and then let it go.
01:10:03And then they let it go, yeah.
01:10:09And it's when you don't do that, where you're like, oh, that's a program.
01:10:14But like, look at him move right now.
01:10:20Like, all of a sudden, this Coyer sequence is full.
01:10:25Yeah.
01:10:34He's got wind in his shirt.
01:10:50He's got wind in his shirt.
01:10:54He's got wind in his head.
01:10:59He's got wind in his head.
01:11:11Okay, the three-legged table thing has been infiltrating this choreography all season long.
01:11:21We've seen so many of those.
01:11:23Well, no cartwheels.
01:11:24No cartwheels.
01:11:26No backflips.
01:11:28No.
01:11:29Thank goodness.
01:11:30We don't need that many of those.
01:11:42Well, that was our last run through of the day.
01:11:46Have you had enough skating yet, Joni?
01:11:48Oh, I better not have.
01:11:50I know.
01:11:51We have so much more to go.
01:11:52We have three more days to miss.
01:11:53Three more days.
01:11:55And competition starts tomorrow.
01:12:00Excited for that.
01:12:02Yeah.
01:12:03Yeah.
01:12:03So we've seen the practices, but it's a whole new...
01:12:08Oh, just a viewer's note for everybody.
01:12:11Uh, Kelowna is on a different time zone thing than most of North America.
01:12:19So we're, uh, Kelowna does not change clocks this weekend.
01:12:26That's correct.
01:12:26Whereas most of North America does.
01:12:29Yes.
01:12:29And so look at the time schedules at your own perils, folks.
01:12:35Um, that it'll only affect Sunday because that's when the time change happens.
01:12:41Well, and Canada itself, some places are now changing.
01:12:45Right.
01:12:45Yeah, exactly.
01:12:46Yep.
01:12:47Yep.
01:12:48Most of British Columbia is not changing.
01:12:50No.
01:12:52Quad Lutz from Curie Lo.
01:12:59So don't forget to do whatever you need to do to your clock.
01:13:03Yeah.
01:13:03But check the time of the competition on Sunday.
01:13:05Yeah, definitely check the time.
01:13:08If you're changing clocks, just know that Kelowna is not changing clocks.
01:13:15And hopefully all my devices know what to do and where I am.
01:13:20You would hope.
01:13:21I hope.
01:13:29Tomorrow we're back on at 11 a.m.
01:13:32And we're, we ended with the men today.
01:13:34We're starting with the men tomorrow.
01:13:36The practice will be short programs.
01:13:39Today they had a choice, but tomorrow will be short programs.
01:13:43Then we have pairs, women, and dance.
01:13:45And we'll have a little break.
01:13:46And then the men's competition.
01:13:50And we will be back tomorrow with practices along with Ted.
01:13:54And we'll hear all about his night out.
01:13:55Yes.
01:13:56Oh, yes.
01:13:57Ted's wild night out.
01:14:01Probably involves a nap.
01:14:03I would, I take a nap.
01:14:12Tomorrow I think we're going to get, they've got a Funzac clear the ice, clean the ice with the Zamboni
01:14:19game.
01:14:20And I think tomorrow I'm going to have you and Ted go at it.
01:14:24Yeah.
01:14:25We won't tell Ted until he's here.
01:14:28But yeah, we'll have Ted go at it tomorrow.
01:14:31Play the Zamboni game.
01:14:32Play the Zamboni game.
01:14:34Have you ever driven a Zamboni?
01:14:35You know, I have skated for decades and I've never been on a Zamboni.
01:14:40Really?
01:14:41It's very sad.
01:14:41Yeah.
01:14:44Not that I've asked, but.
01:14:45You know, it's going to be fun.
01:14:51You must be a plan.
01:14:52You're not in a Zamboni game.
01:14:54You're not in a Zamboni game.
01:14:59It's going to be fun.
01:15:00You're not in a Zamboni game.
01:15:03Yeah, I think it's going to be fun.
01:15:03No, that's fine.
01:15:03Yeah, we'll get it.
01:15:15as the practices have been going on today television has been in setting up their cameras
01:15:21and running cables and checking lighting and all of a sudden there's well there's three cameras
01:15:28all right in front of us yeah yeah the thing that most people don't see in the
01:15:35behind the scenes here is that basically everything is being set up like day of or day before and so
01:15:42like nothing is going on until that until we literally the first day we gotta get get into
01:15:50the arena well some of us have been here for a few days it's true i have not
01:15:57that's it
01:16:00Kevin Amos taking his bow some some nice skating from him today
01:16:11hope his head is in the game tomorrow yeah absolutely
01:16:17yeah
01:16:19yeah

01:17:41I mean, the fact that I love that you all have been able to bring this to a worldwide audience.
01:17:55Because, you know, it's important for the sport, it's important for the fans who are already engaged,
01:18:01it's important for the fans who are just learning what the sport is about, like, everything.
01:18:06So, it's great to see.
01:18:09Well, and it's great to try new things.
01:18:11Yeah.
01:18:12And this might not be the way it always goes, we might develop and try a few new things,
01:18:16but it's a starting point and there's some great opportunities to educate, share information,
01:18:25and engage fans.
01:18:27Yep.
01:18:28So, I've certainly enjoyed it.
01:18:30I have to go home and do some studying tonight so when Ted's asking me all those questions
