00:00:00Don't ask me anything figure skating related.
00:00:02Yeah, you'd win there. You'd make a lot more money.
00:00:05I have all sorts of questions about the game shows that we'll get into over the next few days
00:00:09because I love those and I actually saw you on them.
00:00:12But practices though, but practices.
00:00:15Yeah, that's okay. Well, we have the women's practice coming up here.
00:00:18Let's go through this list a little bit, what we can expect.
00:00:20What are your thoughts coming into this competition?
00:00:22You watched Angers last week. What are your thoughts coming in here?
00:00:26This is my absolute favorite event, the women's.
00:00:29It's the one that I've been looking forward to.
00:00:31It was like that last week where it was like, the field is just so deep.
00:00:36This field, we could potentially expect six triple axles from these women.
00:00:41Half of the field has a triple axle. Two of them have quads.
00:00:46Like these are, and they're all great skaters.
00:00:49And that's the thing that I'm really looking forward to.
00:00:51And I love that we're starting with that today.
00:00:53It's serious business. There's no question at that level.
00:00:56Mao Shimada, we got to talk about that four-time junior world champion.
00:00:59And very difficult. We saw Mia Hamada a little earlier.
00:01:02We were talking with Mia how hard it was for Mao to keep up that junior career,
00:01:08if you will, for four years, waiting to get here.
00:01:10And this is her debut on the Senior Grand Prix.
00:01:12Yeah. Mao Shimada has just been unbelievably consistent and undefeatable, really.
00:01:20I mean, it's been so long since last defeat.
00:01:23But will that continue now that she's in senior four?
00:01:26Is it all of a sudden you make that leap and it's a whole new world?
00:01:29Like, you never know with these young ones what happens when they go see you.
00:01:33I don't know.
00:01:34I don't expect anything.
00:01:34If I was a betting man, which I'm not, but if I was a betting man,
00:01:38I'd have to bet on now to continue because she's been so resilient.
00:01:42Now, having said that, it's a different environment.
00:01:44And she's with a different group of skaters and perhaps expectations, etc.
00:01:48But she's such a beautiful skater and exciting as well.
00:01:50But let's go through some of these others.
00:01:51Nina Petrochina, of course, European champion from last year.
00:01:54She is brilliant as well.
00:01:55Yeah.
00:01:56And just been on fire already this season.
00:01:59So, Quad Sao in the free skate, maybe?
00:02:01We'll see.
00:02:02Yeah.
00:02:02And, you know, I want to mention Anna Passetta from Italy.
00:02:05Probably the fastest and more powerful, more aggressive,
00:02:08most aggressive skater when she enters those jumps.
00:02:10She's really excited.
00:02:11Yeah.
00:02:12I don't know what's going to happen with her.
00:02:14She's been just inconsistent.
00:02:16Yeah.
00:02:16But a fan favorite.
00:02:17Yeah.
00:02:18Yeah, for sure.
00:02:19It's really, too.
00:02:20Yeah.
00:02:21Like, I get it.
00:02:22I get it.
00:02:23It's a Grand Prix.
00:02:23And these girls all look so great.
00:02:25But that's why I love practices.
00:02:27Yeah.
00:02:27Because what we see in practice is not necessarily what you see in competition.
00:02:31It's let's see who wins a practice.
00:02:33That's for sure.
00:02:34And we go, okay, keep going through your list.
00:02:34Well, we talked about Mao a little bit.
00:02:36Now, your American colleague, Isabel Lovito.
00:02:39My American colleague.
00:02:41Well, Isabel, we have not seen her yet this season.
00:02:43And she was dealing with, I think, something of an injury over the summer.
00:02:47And then she switched free skates.
00:02:49We don't know what's going to happen.
00:02:51First time we're seeing her.
00:02:52I wanted to ask about that because when I saw that she was going to skate to the Pirates
00:02:56of the Caribbean and I saw some video of that, I was just so excited because it's a complete
00:03:00change of personality for her.
00:03:02And I thought it was so cool.
00:03:03Then when she changed that, I was only disappointed because I thought that could be really good for
00:03:08people and it changed, I don't know.
00:03:10I haven't seen the new free program.
00:03:11Yeah, I haven't either.
00:03:12It'll be interesting to see.
00:03:14She did say that it's the favorite movie-based music that she's ever skated to.
00:03:20And she's skated to a lot of movie-based music.
00:03:22Yeah.
00:03:23But different.
00:03:24Yeah.
00:03:24Very different.
00:03:25Very different.
00:03:25Let's talk Canada here.
00:03:26Yeah.
00:03:26What about the Canadians?
00:03:27Sarah Mode Dupuis.
00:03:29Joanie?
00:03:29Well, I actually just saw Sarah Mode warming up and she's really excited for this year.
00:03:34Last year she added the triple axle, but it was really a focus for her and it wasn't consistent.
00:03:40She wasn't comfortable with it.
00:03:41But this year she's really worked on everything else and not just that.
00:03:45So she has a full program and is feeling really confident with her consistency and everything
00:03:51else she's built.
00:03:52So I'm looking forward to seeing a new Sarah Mode this year.
00:03:55Yeah, exactly.
00:03:56And hopefully she can nail that triple axel.
00:03:58It gives her confidence for the rest of the content she has.
00:04:00Faye-Anne Laundrie from Canada as well.
00:04:02She's really pretty new to this level of skater.
00:04:04Yes.
00:04:05She is new.
00:04:06We saw her at High Performance Camp.
00:04:08And I think this will be an awakening for her to be competing with these girls at this level.
00:04:14So I think she's a new skater in, but I see her gaining some experience here.
00:04:18Much of what we talk about on the Junior Grand Prix is that you've got those skaters coming in
00:04:22and gaining experience and, you know, honing their skills if they will.
00:04:25They're not expecting a result, they hope, you know, of course.
00:04:28It's not the result.
00:04:29It's the process and it's the learning opportunity.
00:04:31I think that is where Faye-Anne Laundrie will be.
00:04:33Madeline Skies is Canadian champion.
00:04:35Well, let's see what Maddie has.
00:04:37I mean, Maddie's been to two Olympics.
00:04:39She's been a national champion.
00:04:40She's lost her championship.
00:04:42She's gained it back.
00:04:43And Maddie is skating, I think, on her terms now.
00:04:47This is the year she came back and I think she's done with her school.
00:04:50And she's come back.
00:04:52In her mind, she knows what she wants to do.
00:04:55So I think she's called it skating on her terms a little bit.
00:04:59So we'll see what Maddie has.
00:05:00And she's upgrading.
00:05:02Yeah.
00:05:03Well, this year will be interesting for Maddie.
00:05:05That's for sure.
00:05:07Jackie, what about Sophia Samuldukina?
00:05:09Oh, gosh.
00:05:10Sophia is probably, you know, we saw her last year being one of the most musically artistic
00:05:17skaters out there.
00:05:19She's one who used to have quads, used to have a triple axel, is now bringing stuff back.
00:05:24And so excited to see where she is here because we saw her earlier in the Challenger series
00:05:30doing well, but not maybe to her standards.
00:05:32So she's one who could be on the podium.
00:05:35Yeah, yeah.
00:05:36A little unpredictable.
00:05:36We won't know what happens there.
00:05:38Yu-Jae Kim from Korea now.
00:05:39She has a twin sister.
00:05:40I mean, they're both brilliant.
00:05:42And they've moved from juniors into seniors.
00:05:44So it's exciting to follow their career.
00:05:46Yeah.
00:05:46And another one who has a triple axel.
00:05:48Yeah.
00:05:49Like, who doesn't?
00:05:50But her sister just competed last week.
00:05:52So let's see if she can take some inspiration from that.
00:05:54And the final skater in the second group here, Ji-A-Shin from Korea as well.
00:05:58Brilliant.
00:05:58I mean, Ji-A-Shin and Mao Shimada were on the juniors for years competing against each other.
00:06:04So another one where I think the fans will be very excited about this one.
00:06:07Well, it's so exciting to see those juniors that are graduating.
00:06:10The seniors will see Rio Nakata in the men's event, of course.
00:06:13And it's exciting to see how they fit into the seniors.
00:06:15This is the beginning of the next quad.
00:06:17So what will happen over the next four years, we'll get a glimpse of what is to come over this
00:06:22week, of course.
00:06:23Week number two.
00:06:24So there are four more to go here on the Senior Grand Prix.
00:06:27So let's step aside.
00:06:28We'll get the headsets on.
00:06:30Join us for the coverage of the first group in the women's practice session.
00:06:44From the United States of America, Isabel Levito.
00:06:58From the United States of America, Isabel Levito.
00:07:03To be totally locked up by you.
00:07:08You ain't trying to be wasting time on stupid people and cheap lines.
00:07:12I'm sure.
00:07:14I'm sure.
00:07:16So I give a million dollars just to go to grab me by the gun.
00:07:20And I've gone business.
00:07:23Business.
00:07:25I'm not trying to be your bottom lover.
00:07:28Sign me up for them full time.
00:07:29I'm not trying to be my mom, I'm yours, I'm yours, I'm yours, woo.
00:07:33So what a man gotta do, what a man gotta do, to be totally locked up by you.
00:07:41What a man gotta say, what a man gotta pray, to be your last good night and your first good
00:07:48day.
00:07:50So what a man gotta do, what a man gotta do, to be totally locked up by you.
00:07:58What a man gotta do, what a man gotta do, to be totally locked up by you.
00:08:07Okay, we're back on Headset.
00:08:09Jackie, we miss him.
00:08:10I miss someone.
00:08:12Saki Miyake from Japan.
00:08:13And you were talking a little earlier about how excited you are, how excited you are to see her.
00:08:17So excited.
00:08:19Saki Miyake has been on the Japanese domestic circuit for a while.
00:08:26And we've seen her only once in international competition.
00:08:29That was last year at Kenosha Group Cup.
00:08:31And she is such a talent.
00:08:34The jumps, you will gasp when she does her triple toe, triple toe.
00:08:39And it's just, the technique is phenomenal.
00:08:43And I'm glad that she's able to get her first chance at Grand Prix here.
00:08:46Yeah, it's kind of unusual to see a skater who's not been on juniors emerge into seniors.
00:08:52But it's delightful as well because, you know, you don't have to go, you know, some people develop later.
00:08:57Yeah, exactly.
00:08:58Yeah, exactly.
00:08:59You know, what has happened with her.
00:09:01We'll see.
00:09:01We'll look forward to that.
00:09:02Now, of course, in the practice session, you know, the first couple of skaters may or may not do a
00:09:07lot of their elements.
00:09:09So we'll just talk our way through that, of course, as Jackie continues to work.
00:09:16Keep people informed.
00:09:18For sure.
00:09:19We are, we have five here.
00:09:21I see Isabeau.
00:09:22I see Saki.
00:09:24Anna.
00:09:25Yeah.
00:09:27So who is this?
00:09:28I see Mao.
00:09:29Now, so we don't have Nina's here.
00:09:34Oh, Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, Victoria Safanova is not here.
00:09:38Okay.
00:09:40Yeah.
00:09:46Well, this building has been here for, I don't know, Johnny, was it by like 25, 30 years maybe?
00:09:51And the very first event they had in this building in Kelowna was a junior national championship called Champions.
00:09:58Tomorrow's Champions.
00:09:59Tomorrow's Champions.
00:09:59I remember that.
00:10:00Exactly.
00:10:01I was working with you at that time.
00:10:02That's correct.
00:10:03Yeah.
00:10:03It was a great event.
00:10:04Yes.
00:10:05And it was exciting to have this new building.
00:10:07And it's still in pretty good shape here in Kelowna.
00:10:09It's a beautiful city.
00:10:10Everybody loves this place.
00:10:11Loves Kelowna.
00:10:12They just had the Memorial Cup here in May.
00:10:15Yep.
00:10:15And so they did quite a few.
00:10:16That's hockey, folks.
00:10:17You figure it's getting, folks.
00:10:18That's hockey.
00:10:18I have no idea what you're talking about.
00:10:19Every time Skate Canada International was here, there was a fellow competing in the men's event.
00:10:23I don't know if you remember Amizuro, can you?
00:10:26Yeah.
00:10:26Exactly.
00:10:27Yeah.
00:10:27Oh, that's right.
00:10:29And it was...
00:10:29Oh, it was in Kelowna.
00:10:31Yes.
00:10:32And the Pooh Bears were everywhere.
00:10:34I'm sure.
00:10:34The guys who work here still talk about the Pooh Bears.
00:10:36Oh, really?
00:10:37And hoping they're not making a return, because it was, of course, wild, whatever.
00:10:42It was mayhem.
00:10:43But, yep.
00:10:44You know what I miss, though?
00:10:45I miss the big moose from...
00:10:48Oh, Halifax.
00:10:49From Halifax.
00:10:50Up in the wall?
00:10:51Yeah.
00:10:51Oh.
00:10:52I still remember looking up and being like, why is there a big moose head right on top
00:10:56of me?
00:10:57I don't think I was there.
00:10:58You weren't there.
00:10:59It was a much smaller operation.
00:11:01It was just Steve and myself.
00:11:03There was only two of us there, and now we have cast of thousands of computers.
00:11:06And things everywhere.
00:11:07But they had this giant moose head at the far end of the rink.
00:11:09And I believe when they scored, the eyes lit up, smoke came from its nostrils and stuff.
00:11:17Yeah.
00:11:18It was...
00:11:19And that was beautiful, too.
00:11:20Just by the waterfront.
00:11:21The weather was gorgeous.
00:11:23Yeah.
00:11:24You know, some people have said this place is a little bit like...
00:11:26Well, it's not like Oberstdorf, but Oberstdorf from the perspective that it's kind of a vacation
00:11:31place.
00:11:31It's low-key, but it's beautiful.
00:11:34And, you know, you're not downtown in a big city.
00:11:37Not that all the Scenic Grand Prixs are in big cities, but...
00:11:41Well, thank you.
00:11:43Thank you for having me here.
00:11:44Oh, you're very welcome.
00:11:45We're happy to have you here.
00:11:47There seems to be some technical issues for those that can here or not here.
00:11:51They're working on that, of course, right now.
00:11:53So, stand by.
00:11:54All right.
00:12:10I'm going to see that Sakimiyaki at the board to the coach, Snoke.
00:12:15so without victoria safanova as the first one we're going to get a little more practice
00:12:20for another three minutes or so yeah that's true i don't know where she is i know that they were
00:12:26having a challenge with visas but they did get the visa so maybe she just has not arrived yet i
00:12:31don't i don't know i've seen her i've seen victoria safanova practice before at you know
00:12:39at the olympics and worlds before and it's not surprising that she's not on the first okay
00:12:45practice okay two minutes and 51 seconds sometimes they just take that extra day so this is the music
00:12:52for victoria so we know she's registered in here but not on the ice as we take a look at
00:13:01some of
00:13:01the other skaters there's isabel levito i'm so interested to see what isabos is going to be like
00:13:09today yeah just like we saw her at a sort of exhibition event called summer sizzler uh earlier
00:13:17in in the summer where she debuted her
00:13:24where where she was um doing uh her short program for the first time and so we'll see yeah
00:13:35i'm really interested to see it knowing that my pirates of the caribbean i know no pirates has been discarded
00:14:02on a present at her big jumps yeah but she's a great short program skater it's the free program that's
00:14:09a challenge for her because she uses all that
00:14:11strength and energy and you know she might get the elements done at the end of the program but
00:14:15they're not the same quality as the opening she's also very much of a toe jumper so the
00:14:20the lutz is big for her you know the lutz toe obviously is big for her she's a little bit
00:14:25like caitlin osmond in that way yeah exactly
00:15:00beautiful triple toe triple toe wow i told you yeah that's amazing there's quad there's quad
00:15:08possibility wow the distance traveled in the air from the first one to the landing of the second
00:15:17was amazing you know and that's the great thing about this for you we think we know
00:15:31the development uh process and timing for those athletes as we watch them in juniors and then they
00:15:38go away there's an injury or this or that but then they go to sight so out of sight out
00:15:41of mind and
00:15:42when you don't see the skater all of a sudden they arrive on the scene is like complete contender
00:15:47yeah we're starting with the european champion
00:15:54and she had you know a lot of illnesses uh about a year and a half two years ago
00:16:00but wow she is a determined and these are new programs for her this year
00:16:10i think with her the the thing that has impressed me the most
00:16:13this season so far she's always been a very assertive and just like feisty competitor but
00:16:21the way that she has come out this season is like she wants to win everything
00:16:27well she gained so much confidence to her success last season
00:16:33and her recovery from injuries and illness she's in control
00:16:40we're gonna hear a lot of rosalia this season and this is one of those we got two rosalias in
00:16:47this
00:16:47yeah it's short for a cramp group
00:17:13you know you can tell with those athletes who run their programs if they're skating first or even
00:17:18second this is a plan and your top athletes generally do that you don't see a lot of people walking
00:17:24through them anymore right
00:17:35it's always fascinating to see what the what their strategies are like in practice yeah oh
00:17:43this is a missed time take off
00:17:51and a lot of this first day of practices is just feeling the ice too
00:17:55true um getting to understand what
00:18:00the dimensions of the of the of the rink is like all of those things
00:18:07yeah but things happen so quickly they have the practice today but then they hit
00:18:13women will compete tomorrow they'll start the competition no they won't sorry pardon me they'll
00:18:20start on saturday so they actually have an they got time yeah they got lots of time
00:18:23competition happens so fast
00:18:26it's like preparation preparation and then competition starts before you know it you're
00:18:31you're on you're on the plane going home i mean it's also the grand free is just it's so quick
00:18:37yeah compared to some of these other competitions that we have
00:18:47you know you wonder for nina whether the win last year adds more pressure we always use the word
00:18:53pressure personal expectation forget about everybody else they don't matter but she does and how she
00:18:59thinks about what she wants to do whether she can repeat it and we'll see as we take a look
00:19:05at anna
00:19:05pesetta from italy as we talked about the power and speed so watch for that the beginning of her
00:19:10short here if it is your short i'm not sure what she is doing at the moment
00:19:30it's hard to tell on screen she's carrying a lot of speed she's marking she's marking it
00:19:38she hasn't she hasn't warmed up that lutz tow yet so okay probably why the last jump that i saw
00:19:44her do
00:19:44was a flip
00:19:52you know it's interesting you see her do a nice bracket right up into the double axle that was huge
00:19:58is for skaters who are they you know have learned the elements slower and then they have to add speed
00:20:04later and then there are some like her that learn at full speed how do you pull back because the
00:20:09speed
00:20:09sometimes they make it you know inconsistent right but those are the ones who they have it right like
00:20:18then it's it's for me i think it's much harder to push up your your speed your power for jumps
00:20:26than it is
00:20:27for you to pull back yeah i agree agree because it just it's just so much scarier if you're not
00:20:31used
00:20:32to doing it that way yeah and it can throw your timing off yes yes
00:20:54you know it's interesting with that even as a junior she it was really exciting to watch because of the
00:21:00speed
00:21:01but she is very intense and her facial expression as well and the that's just the program it's not a
00:21:07problem
00:21:08yeah
00:21:11i think what i what i love about watching her is um her ankle power like that is what she
00:21:19gets so much
00:21:20of this power from she takes a couple of of crossovers and she's just full speed down the ice yeah
00:21:27that's
00:21:27true and can maintain the speed we see other skaters build the speed but then as soon as they stop
00:21:32pushing they slow down yeah and there's a knack to being able to carry that speed flow of edge right
00:21:59so that's one of those times when i actually like the knee slide exit out of the spin
00:22:06there's just so many of those knee slides out of the spins that just are throwaways and that one
00:22:11was very musically yeah that was good point okay here she is saki miyaki from japan
00:22:17get ready jackie samba
00:22:31another one where you see one two three crossovers and she is full speed yeah
00:22:43oh my gosh measure that measure the distance has to be one of the longest ones wow
00:23:03i saw her earlier she said triple axel in the free skate she didn't even look tight in there no
00:23:08no
00:23:45what's that's a clean skate no she is ready
00:23:50So ready.
00:23:55Yeah, it's interesting because we don't have a lot of background on her,
00:23:58but will she be one that will shine three years or four years from now
00:24:02in the French Alps?
00:24:03And what we see right at the moment,
00:24:05she certainly is showing enough to make you believe that she'll be there.
00:24:09Yeah.
00:24:11Ted, you and I were talking about this earlier.
00:24:12You were like, why haven't we seen her in international competition?
00:24:16She's only been at one international event.
00:24:19Wow.
00:24:20Ever in her career, and that was last year in September.
00:24:24And the only reason why she's here at the Grand Prix
00:24:27was because she did so well at that event
00:24:29that she was able to get a season best score
00:24:34that was high enough to qualify her to be in the pool.
00:24:38So this is all, like, nobody's giving her any favors here.
00:24:41She's doing it all herself.
00:24:43Oh, great edge work on that step sequence.
00:24:51She's a contender here, without question.
00:24:54She's selling it.
00:24:55Who isn't?
00:25:00It's a feel.
00:25:01It's a feel.
00:25:02It's amazing.
00:25:02Yeah.
00:25:14Well, that is exciting.
00:25:16Yeah.
00:25:17There we go.
00:25:18Kind of her debut for everyone to see
00:25:21as we take a look at now four-time junior world champion,
00:25:24Mao Shimada.
00:25:25Boy, that country is rich with talent.
00:25:27Oh, yeah.
00:25:28Yeah.
00:25:32Starting with the free skate.
00:25:58triple axel yeah looks like it was might have been on the queue yeah not one of her best but
00:26:03still does it right that's so important it won't always be perfect takeoff but
00:26:13she has really good air position awareness
00:26:19quato she made that look easy until the end wow
00:26:27that quato has certainly improved from last season when we were seeing it
00:26:47how long ago was it that the triple x triple toe was the big element for women's skating and
00:26:52it's a must-have even in juniors now yeah the juniors it's amazing what they're doing and
00:26:59so deep too like not just yeah 10 yeah 10 10 12 yeah exactly yeah
00:27:08but you know once you learn to rotate and you apply that with momentum then all of a sudden i
00:27:13don't want
00:27:13to say easy but it makes it easier because the mechanics of it make it possible right when the
00:27:19mechanics don't make it possible then it's a struggle and it's a fight and there's injury
00:27:22there's all sorts of things but they're being taught at a very early stage extremely well to
00:27:28learn how to rotate good technique yeah good technique and great skating yeah really good skating skills
00:27:34and coming from so many different countries so we saw in the junior grand prix the top five
00:27:38five different countries on every single one i believe of the junior grand prix
00:27:43event and one of the events has different countries in the top ten
00:27:51so now it doesn't matter how many skaters the country has it matters the quality of the work
00:27:56that they do with who they do have
00:28:01if folks are tuning in for the first time this season you'll notice that this free skate only has
00:28:07six jump elements and that's because there's one fewer jump jumping past this season and so a lot of
00:28:15the skaters have had to re-strategize their programs to max out their technical content mao is certainly one of
00:28:22those because last year you really couldn't have gotten too many more jumps from her in in her free skate
00:28:31um given the triple axle and the quad toe and so she's had to rework it this season do you
00:28:36like that
00:28:37world change so far yeah me too it's it's given more room for the program to breathe and also i
00:28:46think it
00:28:46still highlights the skaters who have the big jumps because you have to then differentiate yourself in a
00:28:53different way yeah and i like the choreo spin we saw a few very creative choreo spins in the juniors
00:28:59and i'm
00:29:00anxious to see the seniors and that will develop you remember when they introduced the dance spin yeah
00:29:09that's true and it was completely different to what we see now so it takes time to develop
00:29:28hey not a bad first run through just pop lutz
00:29:34how fast that is yeah some of the best spins in the competition
00:29:42nice crowd for this practice session so we have some schools here so they brought so they do this
00:29:48at the the canadian events they brought some schools in and uh they make kind of a a day of
00:29:55it they
00:29:55they study the flags and the different countries that are going to be here i want to be at that
00:29:59school
00:30:02all right is well levito doing her short program more rosalia for you
00:30:18saw her do triple loop triple loop earlier and looked good
00:30:24i think her combination is going to be a flip loop here coming up and the most important thing
00:30:30for isabelle is to keep the flow between the two jumps for every skater triple flip triple there it is
00:30:37good nice well all those questions about how ready she was she's ready yeah
00:30:53this program is also something of a departure for her yeah it is a little bit yeah because although
00:31:01it still has great i don't want to say that like but beautiful form right there's an emotion added to
00:31:06it that is a little bit different than just the skating to the classical music so that's that's a nice
00:31:10addition for her and the thing that i like about it was one of the things i i was looking
00:31:16forward to
00:31:16with the benoit friske was that she's working with different choreographers this one is with
00:31:20laurie nickel and carolina costner and so the even the movements her patterns on the ice are different
00:31:29because those choreographers are not doing the same things that she's used to doing oh that's a bit better
00:31:40the one thing that is about gives away a little bit to some of the top competitors is perhaps the
00:31:45speed overall but she has other aspects that they may not have um and as she continues to improve that
00:31:53that gap will close i mean she's certainly a top world contender for podium but that might be the one
00:32:00area that is a bit of a gap yeah in some cases and that often happens when she's entering the
00:32:08flip and
00:32:09the lutz jumps yeah the rest of the program she has a really good flow of edge
00:32:13yeah this voice and this melody matches her not only obviously the physical choreography but her face as
00:32:28well like everything is included
00:32:49well the physicality of the spins nowadays they make it look easy but it sure not no and the
00:32:55attention to detail on them yeah like every position to the fingertip to like is just so precise
00:33:01and clean that and you have to because there's not much else separating no exactly and then somebody
00:33:08gets a level three and you're like what did they do wrong exactly everything looks fine to me yeah
00:33:15now we see nina petrichina starting to drill some triple sow cows probably looking to do a quad
00:33:22now at some point in this practice session and how clean is it i haven't actually haven't seen the
00:33:26jack she has not landed one in competition cleanly yet what have you seen any online uh yeah well that
00:33:33she's landed cleanly no i have not um a couple of unders maybe a q okay part of the process
00:33:41and then
00:33:41uh and then a quad toe from uh shimata it's it's there for her this week yeah
00:33:56you can see
00:34:15so
00:34:26nothing can change my mind no matter what you do
00:34:31We found a higher love now
00:34:33Too high to want to calm down
00:34:36If it ever gets too much
00:34:38I'll be there for you
00:34:39It's been running on me lately
00:34:43Now we're losing touch
00:34:44Leaning on me, baby
00:34:47It'll heal this long feeling
00:34:49Well, we just saw Quad Sao Kha
00:34:52Unfortunately, I don't think you all saw the Quad Sao Kha
00:34:54But we're getting our cameras on her
00:34:56We're open
00:34:56I'll run down and just ask her to do that
00:34:58so we can see it
00:35:00If you don't mind, just one more time
00:35:01Hey, Nina, can you go and do your Quad Sao again?
00:35:04Okay, so the Quad Sao that we just saw
00:35:06She held on to the landing
00:35:08It probably was an under
00:35:10But it was a very good attempt
00:35:12Let's see if she goes again
00:35:14What's important is the mechanics
00:35:15The mechanics are there, the technique, if it's there
00:35:18Then it's going to be the timing and the momentum
00:35:20But that's going to come in repetition
00:35:21So she's on her way
00:35:24And she knows she needs it
00:35:26Eventually
00:35:27Not necessarily this year
00:35:29Or not this competition necessarily
00:35:31I mean, she's just also been so
00:35:35Generally ambitious about her content
00:35:37Before her injury last year
00:35:40I think she had an Achilles thing going on
00:35:43She was landing triple axles in practice
00:35:45She hasn't gotten back to the triple axel yet
00:35:49But at Worlds, she was doing Quad Toes in practice
00:35:52Let's see what happens here
00:35:56All that hype for a double
00:35:57Yeah, all that build up
00:35:59All that build up
00:36:01No, we can stay with her
00:36:02She's going to try one more
00:36:05I think
00:36:08Here she goes
00:36:09And if she doesn't, then we can
00:36:11Of course, as soon as we take the camera off
00:36:12She'll probably do it
00:36:13But we'll see
00:36:13Let's see what happens here
00:36:20Off camera
00:36:21A triple axel from Saki Miyake
00:36:23Yeah, okay
00:36:29Okay, come on
00:36:30Let's go
00:36:31Okay, we're going to get
00:36:32So much broadcast time
00:36:33Here we go
00:36:34Come on, please
00:36:41Oh, okay
00:36:42Okay, Rob
00:36:42Sorry
00:36:46Joni
00:36:47It's your fault
00:36:48You went down and told her to do it again
00:36:50I told her to do it again
00:36:52But I wasn't specific
00:36:53Oh
00:36:54So I needed to be specific
00:36:55The Quad Sal
00:36:56You were saying double
00:36:57I just said Sal
00:36:58So, yeah
00:36:59The Quad Sal Cal also
00:37:01Is such a
00:37:02Let's do that triple flip
00:37:04Triple loop
00:37:05That's beautiful
00:37:06Probably under a little bit on the flip
00:37:07I think
00:37:07But still good
00:37:10The Sal Cal
00:37:11Has such a
00:37:13Specific timing to it
00:37:14Because of that back outside edge
00:37:16You see different techniques
00:37:17On how long to hold it
00:37:20What you do with it
00:37:21Sorry, the back inside edge
00:37:23That could be your problem
00:37:24If you're doing it
00:37:25I know
00:37:25You got it
00:37:26You got it
00:37:28There it is
00:37:28Yeah, there it is
00:37:28Thank you, Rob
00:37:35But Nina is one of those people who will really hold that and check that edge
00:37:42And so if she's a little bit early or a little bit late on the takeoff
00:37:46It's gone
00:37:47Yeah
00:37:49It's hard to pull the trigger when you're waiting a long time
00:37:51Like when do you pull that trigger
00:37:53Everything's got to work together
00:37:54The knee, the arms
00:37:55The shoulders, hips, everything
00:37:58Do you think there's skaters that are more comfortable with edge jumps than toe jumps?
00:38:02I find it like math and English
00:38:06Which one is math?
00:38:07Wait, which one is math?
00:38:08I think the toe jumps
00:38:09I think so too, yes
00:38:10I think the toe jumps are the math
00:38:11Yes, agreed
00:38:15Agreed
00:38:18I mean, there have been skaters
00:38:20Some of the best skaters in history
00:38:22Have notoriously had issues with one or the other of those jumps
00:38:28Yeah, it's true
00:38:28Triple axle
00:38:30Great knees in the takeoff
00:38:32Great lift
00:38:33Maybe even a little bit over-rotated
00:38:35Over-rotated, yeah
00:38:36Yeah, totally
00:38:37And, you know, that's interesting
00:38:38Because you don't practice
00:38:40I mean
00:38:41To practice consistency
00:38:43You need to have same speed, same height
00:38:44Most of the time
00:38:45Little bit of variation, no big deal
00:38:47But when it goes super high on you
00:38:49There it is
00:38:51There it is
00:38:51With a double toe
00:38:52Nice
00:38:54That looked clean
00:38:56Yeah
00:38:56Pretty clean
00:38:58If anything, a cue
00:38:59Oh, they would
00:39:00Yeah
00:39:01There'd be review for sure
00:39:02Yeah
00:39:03With a double toe
00:39:04Nina Petrucchina
00:39:05My goodness
00:39:06There you go
00:39:07Start typing, man
00:39:08It's already typed
00:39:09Oh, it's already typed
00:39:10Oh, yeah
00:39:12You are prepared
00:39:16Here comes
00:39:17Anna Bezetta
00:39:19Let's see what she's up to here
00:39:24You can see huge lift
00:39:26I love that entrance
00:39:27Into that let's toe
00:39:29Yeah
00:39:29She does that in the second half
00:39:31Of her free skate
00:39:31And I'm always a little bit like
00:39:33I'm always a little worried for it
00:39:35Because that's when she gets tired
00:39:36But it is such a beautiful transition
00:39:43She's a momentum skater
00:39:45And so if the timing is slightly off
00:39:47It just doesn't work
00:39:48Like, it's not her focus
00:39:50The timing
00:39:50It's using the momentum
00:39:52And the rhythm
00:39:53And if that rhythm's a little bit off
00:39:54Then things go a little haywire
00:39:56As we take a look at this triple axle
00:39:59Oh, my God
00:40:00Sweet
00:40:01Beautiful
00:40:01Wow
00:40:02It's such a good jump
00:40:03Yeah
00:40:04This is a really great
00:40:05As you mentioned earlier, Jackie
00:40:06On the opening
00:40:07A great event
00:40:08A great women's event
00:40:09It really is
00:40:10I'm not sure
00:40:11I know the other lineups
00:40:12Are good as well
00:40:13You know
00:40:13Throughout the Grand Prix
00:40:14But this is one of the
00:40:15For me, this is the one
00:40:22When this lineup first came out
00:40:24When the Grand Prix assignments
00:40:26Were announced
00:40:27Everybody was looking at
00:40:29Skate Canada being like
00:40:30Wow
00:40:30Yeah
00:40:31That's the one
00:40:32Yeah
00:40:36Well, the debut for Mao
00:40:37And then also the debut for Rio
00:40:40So the Japanese fans
00:40:41Are certainly going to
00:40:42Be interested to see
00:40:44How their youngsters
00:40:45Graduate into
00:40:46University skating
00:40:49Wow
00:40:50They've been
00:40:50They've been graduating pretty well
00:40:52Yeah
00:40:52Oh, yeah
00:40:53There's no doubt
00:40:54Great speed up
00:40:55In this triple sac
00:40:56For
00:40:56I mean, we're talking about
00:41:03How Mao Sada
00:41:04Or Mao Sada
00:41:05Mao Shimada
00:41:06Yeah, yeah
00:41:07Wow
00:41:07Has been
00:41:10Undefeated
00:41:10She was undefeated
00:41:11On the Junior International Circuit
00:41:13For four years
00:41:15And then she came in
00:41:17To seniors this season
00:41:18And won her first senior event
00:41:20So she is still undefeated internationally
00:41:23Yeah
00:41:25It's a streak that you don't see
00:41:27No, you don't see
00:41:28And we have this young skater here
00:41:30Leah Cho
00:41:31And so she's under
00:41:33In Canada
00:41:33She was undefeated
00:41:34In Novice International
00:41:35Undefeated
00:41:36So it's her first Junior Grand Prix
00:41:38But this was a good experience
00:41:39To be in third
00:41:41Yeah
00:41:41And then she, you know
00:41:42Did well in
00:41:43And came second
00:41:43So you've got to learn
00:41:45All those
00:41:46Not even downs
00:41:47Okay, he didn't win
00:41:48Yeah
00:41:49So
00:41:51Mao Sada does not know
00:41:53What
00:41:53She doesn't know
00:41:54What not winning is
00:41:55No
00:41:55Unless you're in Japan
00:41:56Yeah
00:41:57And if it happens
00:41:59She is not going to like it
00:42:00No
00:42:01She will not like that feeling
00:42:03At all
00:42:03And in the next competition
00:42:05You're going to see
00:42:06Yeah
00:42:06And what's remarkable
00:42:08Is her resilience
00:42:09We saw last year
00:42:10In the final
00:42:12The Junior Grand Prix final
00:42:13In Nagoya
00:42:14She was very, very sick
00:42:15Oh, that was at Junior Worlds
00:42:16Oh, that was at Junior Worlds
00:42:17Yeah, it was Junior Worlds
00:42:18That's right
00:42:18You're right
00:42:19In Tellin'
00:42:21Extremely, extremely sick
00:42:22And Mia had said to me
00:42:24Not sure she's going to even skate
00:42:25Like, she's that sick
00:42:28And she looked
00:42:29She couldn't do anything
00:42:30In the practice session
00:42:31But she went back
00:42:32And later that night
00:42:33She came in
00:42:33And she still wasn't feeling well
00:42:35Skate clean
00:42:36Yep
00:42:39This group has been really good
00:42:43That's just the first group
00:42:47Yeah, I mean
00:42:48We came in with some questions
00:42:51And I think Isabella Vito
00:42:53Has given us
00:42:55Given us some positive answers
00:42:57To those questions
00:43:00Sakimiyake has given us
00:43:01Some positive responses
00:43:03To those questions
00:43:04Yeah, she slam dunked
00:43:05Those responses
00:43:05Oh my God
00:43:06Yeah
00:43:10Which is great
00:43:11You know
00:43:11I mean
00:43:11And this is only one of six
00:43:13So we'll see how this field
00:43:15Sort of unfolds
00:43:16Over this year
00:43:18Sort of setting up the journey
00:43:20And over the next three years
00:43:21And leading up
00:43:22That's going to be exciting
00:43:23Every year
00:43:23As we get
00:43:24Because it could switch
00:43:24Back and forth
00:43:25It could
00:43:25And the other thing
00:43:26With the Grand Prix
00:43:27Is you don't see
00:43:28All the top skaters together
00:43:30You get little bits of them
00:43:32At every competition
00:43:33So you get a glimpse of this
00:43:34And a glimpse of this
00:43:35And until they're all together
00:43:37Yeah
00:43:37And different formats
00:43:39For Grand Prix
00:43:40Will like
00:43:42How does that unfold
00:43:43When all of a sudden
00:43:44You see all those
00:43:45Top skaters together
00:43:46So
00:43:47Yeah
00:43:47And it'll be interesting
00:43:48Because when you get
00:43:49To the top six
00:43:50There's still six or more
00:43:52That could be in the top six
00:43:53Could have been
00:43:53So yes
00:43:55You're getting the best
00:43:55For the Grand Prix final
00:43:56But it is
00:43:57So
00:43:58My question to you Jackie
00:43:59Semi-finals
00:44:00Yeah
00:44:00What do you think
00:44:01Okay
00:44:02I've had a lot of
00:44:03Thoughts about
00:44:04The semi-finals
00:44:05The
00:44:07My
00:44:08On the
00:44:08Sort of
00:44:09Con side of the whole thing
00:44:11Is what is it going to do
00:44:12With the schedule
00:44:13Or to the schedule
00:44:14Of everything
00:44:15Because
00:44:17Figure skating
00:44:17Has been so set
00:44:19Over the past
00:44:20Number of decades
00:44:21Of like
00:44:21This is when things
00:44:22Are going to happen
00:44:23Especially nationals
00:44:24Right
00:44:24And with this
00:44:25With an addition
00:44:26Of a Grand Prix semi-finals
00:44:27It changes the way
00:44:28That a skater
00:44:29Is going to go
00:44:30Into the competition
00:44:31That said
00:44:32What I like about it
00:44:34Is if a skater
00:44:35Were to have a fluke
00:44:36Competition
00:44:37During the Grand Prix
00:44:39And then
00:44:39Like say
00:44:40Kevin Amos last year
00:44:41Got a tenth place
00:44:42At one
00:44:42And then won
00:44:44His second one
00:44:45That would have
00:44:46Gotten him into
00:44:47The semi-finals
00:44:47Whether or not
00:44:48He does well
00:44:48In the semi-finals
00:44:49Is a different story
00:44:50Yeah
00:44:50But it gives him
00:44:51A different opportunity
00:44:53To then redeem himself
00:44:54Yeah
00:44:55Knowing that
00:44:56It's more of an equalizer
00:44:57So let's
00:44:58Okay
00:44:58So we're talking about
00:44:59The skaters at the moment
00:45:00Let's talk about
00:45:00The marketing
00:45:01And that aspect
00:45:03The business of skating
00:45:04You know
00:45:05How do you feel
00:45:06That will help
00:45:06The business of skating
00:45:07It always helps
00:45:09To have some of the
00:45:10Top skaters
00:45:10In the world
00:45:11Or most of the
00:45:12Top skaters
00:45:12In the world
00:45:13Be at one competition
00:45:14And you know
00:45:17The way that the Grand Prix
00:45:18Has evolved
00:45:19Over the past 30 years
00:45:20It is now
00:45:22Two seasons
00:45:23It's the first half
00:45:24Of the season
00:45:24That ends with
00:45:25The Grand Prix final
00:45:25With some of the
00:45:26Top skaters in the world
00:45:27Being there
00:45:28And then it's
00:45:29The end of the
00:45:29Second season
00:45:30Second half of the season
00:45:31With Worlds
00:45:32And the Olympics
00:45:32Right
00:45:33Being the ending
00:45:34Of that
00:45:34So the Grand Prix
00:45:35Semi-finals
00:45:36Would then be
00:45:37Another opportunity
00:45:38For there to be
00:45:39Another high level
00:45:40Competition
00:45:41And so the interest
00:45:42Will be there
00:45:43It's a question
00:45:44Of how that
00:45:45Is disruptive
00:45:47Potentially
00:45:47To a skater schedule
00:45:49There's a next generation
00:45:50Of young skaters
00:45:51Here in Kelowna
00:45:52I'm not sure
00:45:53They're school
00:45:53School kids
00:45:54Those are the school kids
00:45:55That are here
00:45:56We're out of school
00:45:56And we're going to cheer
00:45:58So we can stay in the stands
00:45:59Here as long as we can
00:46:00We don't have to go back to class
00:46:01And there's one thing
00:46:02They love
00:46:02Is seeing themselves
00:46:03On the screen
00:46:04Yeah, absolutely
00:46:05You just put them
00:46:06There's some Japanese fans
00:46:07As well
00:46:14There we go
00:46:20So here we go
00:46:21We have the Canadians
00:46:22Taking to the ice
00:46:35And there's the start order
00:46:37In this practice group
00:46:39So Sarah Mode
00:46:40Will have
00:46:41Six minutes
00:46:42Or probably less
00:46:43A little bit
00:46:43To warm up
00:46:48No Sophia Samodelkina
00:46:50In this
00:46:51Practice group
00:46:53Like you said earlier
00:46:54This is
00:46:54The women don't compete
00:46:56Until Saturday
00:46:57Yeah
00:46:57So this really is
00:46:59They have another opportunity
00:47:00To feel the ice
00:47:01I'm not sure where she trains
00:47:02I could look at
00:47:03She's in LA
00:47:03Oh, she's in LA
00:47:04So she's in the same time zone
00:47:05So time is not a big deal
00:47:06And the flight is on
00:47:07It's not a long travel
00:47:08So
00:47:08Yeah, exactly
00:47:10Direct flight from LA
00:47:11To Kelowna
00:47:12I doubt it
00:47:13You couldn't get here
00:47:15You're rooting
00:47:16Three flights to get over here
00:47:18Delta Airlines
00:47:19Yes
00:47:23All the Canadians here
00:47:29Now you all have a lot of Canadians
00:47:31Doing the broadcast this week, right?
00:47:33Yeah, we do
00:47:35Let's talk a little bit about that
00:47:36It's great
00:47:36You know, Kevin Reynolds
00:47:37Was the Fort Connors champion
00:47:39I believe in 2014
00:47:422013
00:47:422013
00:47:43I think
00:47:44He actually beat
00:47:45Yoziro Henu
00:47:45I think in that competition
00:47:46That's right
00:47:47So he's joining us
00:47:49He lives in Auckland, New Zealand
00:47:50He's actually at the New Zealand Nationals
00:47:53Right now
00:47:53He'll join us on Friday
00:47:55When he gets home
00:47:56We have Caitlin Osmond
00:47:572018 world champion
00:47:59She'll join us from Edmonton
00:48:01For the women's event
00:48:02And we have Christian Moore Tower
00:48:04She'll actually be here in the building
00:48:07Sitting right in front of us
00:48:08She's sitting right in front of us
00:48:09Okay, she's obviously not listening to us
00:48:13So, and she'll be joining us here
00:48:15For the Pairs event
00:48:16And also doing some in-venue
00:48:18And then with Caitlin Weaver
00:48:20She'll be joining us from New York
00:48:21We talked to her yesterday
00:48:22And just testing out the connection
00:48:24So she's done a lot of choreography
00:48:26She's really
00:48:27And I said to her yesterday
00:48:28I don't know how you think about this
00:48:29Or feel about this
00:48:30Jackie
00:48:31She never actually saw herself
00:48:33As a choreographer
00:48:34When she was skating
00:48:35Or whatever
00:48:36But she's done
00:48:37Early on in her career
00:48:38Some beautiful, beautiful work
00:48:40She really has
00:48:41She's brought out
00:48:42You know, one thing is
00:48:43To choreograph movement
00:48:45The other thing is
00:48:46To bring the person's soul out
00:48:48And make that movement
00:48:50Real and honest
00:48:51Right
00:48:52And she has that ability
00:48:53To work with the people
00:48:54To that depth
00:48:55So she's had a brilliant career
00:48:56So far
00:48:57As many others do
00:48:58I mean, I'll say that
00:48:58About, like, for example
00:48:59Monet Chiba's short program
00:49:01Last year
00:49:01Last two years
00:49:02Right
00:49:03It's been
00:49:03That was
00:49:04That was such a
00:49:06Piece for her
00:49:08And it really highlighted
00:49:10A different side of her
00:49:11That you don't necessarily see
00:49:12Yeah
00:49:13And this is the magic
00:49:13That a choreographer can do
00:49:15Interesting question
00:49:16Let's talk about
00:49:17Benoit Richaud for a moment
00:49:18Yes
00:49:18Because we saw him
00:49:19I don't know
00:49:2045 times at the 11th games
00:49:21With different jackets
00:49:22I'm going
00:49:23Wow, what a wardrobe
00:49:24How many suitcases did he have?
00:49:27But anyways
00:49:27He's done some brilliant work
00:49:29How, in your opinion
00:49:30How difficult is it
00:49:31For a choreographer
00:49:33And let's keep in mind
00:49:34It's their business as well
00:49:35So you don't
00:49:36You're not always
00:49:37The most popular person
00:49:38So when you are
00:49:39You do the work
00:49:40How difficult is it
00:49:42To keep the quality of work
00:49:44With so many different people
00:49:45In so many different places
00:49:46In the world
00:49:46I think it's
00:49:47It varies
00:49:49And I think you see that
00:49:51Even when a choreographer
00:49:53Doesn't have like
00:49:54Tons of people
00:49:55On their roster
00:49:55There are just some skaters
00:49:57Who a choreographer
00:49:59Really gels with
00:50:00And it's like
00:50:01Their muse
00:50:01Right
00:50:02Like Laurie Nichols
00:50:03Had a number of skaters
00:50:04Like Carolina Kostner
00:50:05Or like
00:50:06Michelle Kwan
00:50:07Right
00:50:07Who
00:50:08Or Mao Asad
00:50:09Who is just like
00:50:11That's a Laurie Nichols program
00:50:13That's what
00:50:13She's able to do
00:50:15But then
00:50:15There are other ones
00:50:16Where you're like
00:50:16Okay, that's a Laurie Nichols program
00:50:17But it's not as like
00:50:18Magical as the other ones
00:50:20And it's the same thing
00:50:21I mean with Benoit
00:50:22You know
00:50:23If you see it
00:50:23In Adam's
00:50:24Hympha program
00:50:25It's just
00:50:26It's a different level
00:50:28Because he understands
00:50:29That
00:50:31Adam's movement
00:50:31So much more
00:50:32Than anybody else does
00:50:33And I think
00:50:34Some of his work
00:50:35With like
00:50:35Kauri
00:50:36Over the years
00:50:37Has also brought out
00:50:38Some of the best in her
00:50:40I think what's interesting
00:50:41With choreographers
00:50:42Is always
00:50:43You know
00:50:43When there are
00:50:45Repeat types of movements
00:50:46And you see them
00:50:47Across different programs
00:50:48And you're like
00:50:50Okay
00:50:50Does that necessarily work
00:50:52Or is that just something
00:50:53That they're used to doing
00:50:54Yeah
00:50:55And it's hard for the choreographer
00:50:57Because I've got to stay away
00:50:58From that movement
00:50:58Because I've given that
00:50:59To someone else
00:51:00Now what do I do now
00:51:01Go ahead
00:51:01But the other thing
00:51:01That's hard for the choreographer
00:51:02Is they have a vision
00:51:04And they do the program
00:51:05And they get the program
00:51:07To a point
00:51:08Of that's the program
00:51:09But then it's not
00:51:10Performed that way
00:51:11Well you know
00:51:12It's such a good point
00:51:13Joni
00:51:14Because you can create
00:51:15Great choreography
00:51:15But it's only how
00:51:16It's delivered
00:51:17And that's it
00:51:18And I know
00:51:18Talking to Laurie
00:51:19Early on
00:51:20In her career
00:51:21That was a hard thing
00:51:22For her
00:51:22That if the program
00:51:24Was not performed
00:51:25The way they had
00:51:26Said it
00:51:27And trained it
00:51:28And wanted it to show
00:51:30It was really hard
00:51:31To put that name on
00:51:33And say
00:51:33But that's not what I did
00:51:34That was not my work
00:51:35Yeah
00:51:35You can't actually say that
00:51:37No you can't
00:51:38Because then you're
00:51:39Putting it on the skater
00:51:40Which is true
00:51:41Because it's on the skater
00:51:42And the thing
00:51:43About the choreography process
00:51:45That a lot of folks
00:51:46Don't know
00:51:46Is that
00:51:47You start with a program
00:51:48In June
00:51:50In July
00:51:51And then
00:51:52It's like
00:51:53You know
00:51:53The choreographer
00:51:54Has delivered it
00:51:54Then the skater
00:51:56And the coaches
00:51:56Then take that program
00:51:58And they work with it
00:51:59How they have to
00:52:00During the season
00:52:01Because
00:52:01You know
00:52:02Jump layouts change
00:52:04Or
00:52:05You get feedback
00:52:06About a spin
00:52:07Or you
00:52:07You want to put a lift
00:52:09Here
00:52:10Or there's an injury
00:52:11Which is preventing you
00:52:12From doing some of the
00:52:13Choreography
00:52:14And what you see
00:52:15At the end of the season
00:52:16May not be the same thing
00:52:17As what you see
00:52:17At the beginning
00:52:18And we're going to talk
00:52:19A little bit
00:52:20We're going to watch
00:52:20Sarah Mode right now
00:52:21But we're going to talk
00:52:21A little bit about
00:52:22Your skating career
00:52:22Jackie
00:52:23Do we really need to
00:52:24We'll do that
00:52:25A little bit
00:52:25Yeah we do
00:52:26Sarah Mode
00:52:26Dupree from Canada
00:52:27She'll start
00:52:28Group number two here
00:52:29And we start
00:52:30With some Madonna
00:52:32Yes
00:52:34She loves this program
00:52:36Yes
00:52:36She does
00:52:37You can see it
00:52:37Right off the start
00:52:38She
00:52:39Look I just appreciate that
00:52:41Somebody's using Madonna
00:52:42And it's not Vogue
00:52:43And it's Ray of Light
00:52:45This is one of the
00:52:46Like
00:52:46Just a track
00:52:47That
00:52:48This is good for Sarah Mode
00:52:49Yeah
00:52:50She's a strong
00:52:51Powerful skater
00:52:53And working the choreographer
00:52:55But now
00:52:55This is like
00:52:58A different Sarah Mode
00:52:59It's awesome
00:53:05Our senior nationals
00:53:07Will be interesting
00:53:07Because there will be
00:53:08Challenges from a number
00:53:09Of skaters
00:53:10Yes
00:53:11And that
00:53:12That started last year
00:53:13It did
00:53:14Yeah
00:53:14I remember watching
00:53:15Canadian nationals
00:53:16Last year with the women
00:53:16I was like
00:53:17Wait
00:53:17It's not the
00:53:18Maddie Skiza show
00:53:19Anymore
00:53:20No
00:53:20Right
00:53:20It's
00:53:22You had
00:53:23You had Sarah Mode
00:53:23You had Maddie
00:53:25You had Gabby
00:53:26You had
00:53:27Min Sol
00:53:28And all of them
00:53:30Are going to be
00:53:31And now I believe
00:53:31Leah goes into senior
00:53:32As well
00:53:33So that's going to
00:53:34And Reese Rose
00:53:35Another skater
00:53:36With a triple axle
00:53:38So this could be
00:53:39The most interesting
00:53:41Senior nationals
00:53:42Women's event
00:53:44That we've had
00:53:44For many many
00:53:45Many many many
00:53:46Many many many
00:53:47Many years
00:53:49I'll let you guys say that
00:53:51Okay
00:53:52Well I'll let Ted say it
00:53:53Hey it's just true
00:53:54Come on
00:53:54It's not
00:53:55No I agree
00:53:55I totally agree
00:54:03It's fun to see
00:54:04I mean even
00:54:05There are other
00:54:06Canadian skaters
00:54:07Also
00:54:08And you know
00:54:09We see Sarah Mode
00:54:10Having had
00:54:11Kind of the
00:54:14The growth
00:54:15In her skating
00:54:15Over the past
00:54:16Couple of seasons
00:54:17We see someone
00:54:18Like Brecken
00:54:19Brejden
00:54:20Yeah
00:54:20You know
00:54:21Like these
00:54:22These other skaters
00:54:23Who have such
00:54:23Great potential
00:54:25That are just
00:54:26A little bit
00:54:26Inconsistent
00:54:27Yeah
00:54:28And once they
00:54:29Can get it
00:54:30It's there
00:54:31Well once you
00:54:32Get into a more
00:54:32Competitive environment
00:54:34Which is going to be
00:54:35Senior national
00:54:36Now we hope
00:54:37That the game
00:54:37Will be raised
00:54:38Yeah
00:54:39Right
00:54:39And I believe
00:54:40It will be
00:54:40Because competition
00:54:41Breeds competition
00:54:42And that breeds success
00:54:43As well
00:54:44So hopefully
00:54:45We can flip that
00:54:46Into a more
00:54:47Positive trend
00:54:48If you will
00:54:49We certainly
00:54:50Have some abilities
00:54:51We always say
00:54:52At U.S. nationals
00:54:53That people like
00:54:54To peak
00:54:55At U.S. nationals
00:54:56And we get
00:54:57Some of the best
00:54:57From them
00:54:58And you know
00:54:58Canadians
00:54:59Same thing
00:55:02I like this program
00:55:03For her
00:55:07It's a great
00:55:07Upbeat
00:55:08Song
00:55:09And she skates
00:55:10Upbeat to it
00:55:11Yep
00:55:11It just brings life
00:55:15You know
00:55:16You can have great music
00:55:17And you have a good skater
00:55:18But it doesn't really match
00:55:19Sometimes
00:55:20And what we've got
00:55:21This music
00:55:22I think matches her
00:55:23Better than any other program
00:55:24That I've seen her do
00:55:25So this is a great vehicle
00:55:27And we hope
00:55:28That she can
00:55:28You know
00:55:29For her
00:55:30Do her best
00:55:32In competition
00:55:33Fayeann Laundrie
00:55:34We talked a little bit
00:55:35About her
00:55:35Earlier
00:55:36Pretty new to this
00:55:37Level of competition
00:55:38But a great opportunity
00:55:39For her
00:55:42I'm so impressed
00:55:43With her basics
00:55:46It's like strong
00:55:47Solid skater
00:55:51She's focused
00:55:53Nice
00:56:03Those little
00:56:04Those little details
00:56:05Are so critical
00:56:06At least for
00:56:07For me anyways
00:56:08To see that attention
00:56:09To detail
00:56:10Of movement
00:56:12And emotion
00:56:16Lovely
00:56:24Yeah
00:56:24Since I first saw her
00:56:26I think last year
00:56:27At Canadian Nationals
00:56:28The thing that impresses me
00:56:30With her
00:56:30Is her
00:56:31Willingness
00:56:32To let
00:56:32Her body
00:56:34Skate to the
00:56:35Music
00:56:36Of the program
00:56:37Like there are just
00:56:38So many skaters
00:56:39Who tend to
00:56:39Want to rush
00:56:41Everything
00:56:41Because they're
00:56:42Anxious about
00:56:43Getting to the jumps
00:56:44And getting to the patterns
00:56:45To the jumps
00:56:45And she really
00:56:47Takes her time
00:56:48No that's
00:56:49That's what's
00:56:49Most noticeable
00:56:50And maybe one
00:56:50Of the things
00:56:51That's really
00:56:52Got her here
00:56:53Right
00:56:53Because if she
00:56:54Can do the
00:56:55Elements
00:56:55Somewhat the same
00:56:56Level
00:56:57Or difficulty
00:56:58Of the other skaters
00:56:59What else
00:57:00Does she have
00:57:01That makes it
00:57:02A challenge
00:57:02Or challenges
00:57:03Other skaters
00:57:04It's that
00:57:05Right
00:57:08And this is
00:57:09A great opportunity
00:57:10To expose her
00:57:11Skills and ability
00:57:14Not just to Canada
00:57:15But to the world
00:57:16Yeah
00:57:33Really nice lines
00:57:38Nice
00:57:39Every detail
00:57:40Like every detail
00:57:42Right to the fingertips
00:57:44Yes
00:58:00And you have to
00:58:02Train those details
00:58:03Yeah
00:58:03You can't just think
00:58:04When I'm doing the program
00:58:06I'll do it
00:58:07Yeah
00:58:07You have to train
00:58:08Every look
00:58:10Every glance
00:58:10Every
00:58:11Yeah and you have
00:58:12To want to do them
00:58:13Like yeah
00:58:14You've been told
00:58:14To do it
00:58:15But you actually
00:58:15Have to want to do it
00:58:17Yeah
00:58:18I think it
00:58:19It's another thing
00:58:20That intrigues me
00:58:22About practices
00:58:22Is who of these
00:58:24Skaters are
00:58:26Really taking this
00:58:27Moment to not
00:58:28Just do the jumps
00:58:30Run through
00:58:30But actually do
00:58:32The performing
00:58:32Yeah
00:58:35I haven't seen
00:58:36A lot of her
00:58:36Because I've been
00:58:37Covering juniors
00:58:37For so long
00:58:38So I really don't know
00:58:39I'm impressed
00:58:40I'm really impressed
00:58:41With the maturity
00:58:43And the beauty
00:58:44Of her connection
00:58:46With the music
00:58:47Oh
00:58:48That was nice
00:58:50Four-time Canadian champion
00:58:52Two-time Olympian
00:58:53Madeline Skiis
00:58:56And now she's got competition
00:58:57Within her own country
00:58:58Which is not a bad thing
00:58:59For anyone
00:59:00For her as well
00:59:01We'll see
00:59:03What happens
00:59:04Here in Kelowna
00:59:17I was talking
00:59:17About her upgrades
00:59:20At Budapest Trophy
00:59:21Two weeks ago
00:59:22She did a layout
00:59:23With a flip
00:59:24To start
00:59:24And are we going
00:59:25To see it
00:59:25We're going
00:59:26To see the flip
00:59:28Which means
00:59:28That her triple
00:59:29Let's triple toe
00:59:30Is now in the
00:59:31Second half
00:59:32Hmm
00:59:33Okay
00:59:39Well if you want
00:59:39To compete
00:59:40And she's been
00:59:40Around long enough
00:59:41To know what
00:59:42She has to do
00:59:42In her repertoire
00:59:43To move up
00:59:45A couple spots
00:59:51Okay
01:00:17This was what
01:00:18Gave her trouble
01:00:18At Budapest Trophy
01:00:19Is the new layout
01:00:21Of this
01:00:21Let's toe
01:00:22At the end
01:00:23Well I think
01:00:24She's opened
01:00:24With it for
01:00:25Yeah
01:00:25For her entire career
01:00:27Yeah
01:00:32That's the getting
01:00:33Used to it
01:00:33Yeah
01:00:33Yeah for sure
01:00:34Yeah
01:00:35She can do it
01:00:35Just getting used
01:00:36To doing it
01:00:37In that part
01:00:37Of the program
01:00:42I actually think
01:00:44This is a good
01:00:44Program for her
01:00:46Aura
01:00:47You know
01:00:48For her personality
01:00:51Particularly the beginning
01:00:52I also think
01:00:53Her doing shows
01:00:55Like Stars on Ice
01:00:56And things like that
01:00:57Are really good
01:00:58For her
01:00:58To bring this out
01:00:59Yeah
01:01:02See just that
01:01:03Little detail there
01:01:04With the hand
01:01:04And the chin
01:01:05Nice
01:01:10Yeah
01:01:11Like to me
01:01:11This is much better
01:01:18But the field
01:01:18And not only here
01:01:20But across the
01:01:20Senior Grand Prix
01:01:21Is so strong
01:01:23You gotta have
01:01:23Everything
01:01:32I don't know
01:01:33That she would
01:01:34Have done
01:01:34Those quick
01:01:34Movements
01:01:35Like two
01:01:35Three years
01:01:36Ago
01:01:36And sharp
01:01:37To the music
01:01:38So it's
01:01:38So nice
01:01:39To see
01:01:40This is different
01:01:41Yeah it is
01:01:42For Maddie
01:01:43Yeah
01:01:51You know what
01:01:51This is a new
01:01:52Maddie a little bit
01:01:53In that short program
01:01:54That is nice
01:01:54I like it
01:01:55You know
01:01:56The year after the Olympics
01:01:58Is where you take
01:01:59The chances
01:01:59Yeah
01:02:00Yeah
01:02:00Well because now
01:02:01You have all the data
01:02:02You understand
01:02:03Where you're at
01:02:04Right
01:02:04Sofia
01:02:05Sofia is not here
01:02:07For time to time
01:02:07To time to time
01:02:08So this will be
01:02:09Playing for sure
01:02:09For all programs
01:02:10In two minutes
01:02:11And two minutes
01:02:12Every seconds
01:02:13A little bit of a break here
01:02:18With Sofia
01:02:19Samodelkina
01:02:20Not on this ice
01:02:24See what's going on
01:02:26Let's see who Rob can follow
01:02:28He's following Sarah Mode
01:02:29Right now
01:02:29Maybe she's going to be
01:02:30Warming up the triple axel
01:02:31Let's take a look
01:02:37No she's doing the flip
01:02:40Make that easy
01:02:49Jackie what was
01:02:51The best competition
01:02:53You've ever been at live
01:02:54Ooh
01:02:59I have to say
01:03:01Wrong answer
01:03:02You're out
01:03:03Because we know the answer
01:03:04We want to see
01:03:05If you get it right
01:03:06Do you know the answer
01:03:06For like a game show
01:03:07Game show
01:03:08Yeah
01:03:09I was going to say
01:03:102019 worlds
01:03:11In Saitama
01:03:14Oh yeah
01:03:16That's Yu-Jay Kim
01:03:17Triple axel
01:03:18Like it was nothing
01:03:19Like butter
01:03:21And she's got two
01:03:22In the free skate
01:03:23Oh that's awesome
01:03:24There's Sarah Mode
01:03:25Triple axel
01:03:27Saving that kind of
01:03:30So why was that
01:03:31The most exciting
01:03:32Event for you
01:03:32I think there was
01:03:35It's still in my head
01:03:36Because there was
01:03:37This back to back
01:03:38Of Nathan Chen
01:03:39And Yuzuru Hanyu
01:03:40Yes
01:03:41In the free skate
01:03:41That was so good
01:03:43It's true
01:03:44And you know
01:03:45It's interesting
01:03:45I
01:03:47You know
01:03:47I don't want to say
01:03:48I have to pick the words
01:03:50Correctly here
01:03:50Nathan Chen
01:03:52Was so incredible
01:03:53But as time went on
01:03:55He sort of got a little
01:03:56Forgotten about how
01:03:57Great he was
01:03:58Because we've seen
01:03:58Ilya and all that
01:03:59Kind of stuff
01:03:59But Nathan Chen
01:04:00Was amazing
01:04:01I think there's that
01:04:03There's also just the fact
01:04:04That Nathan is a
01:04:06Has never wanted
01:04:07To be a celebrity
01:04:08Never wanted to be
01:04:09Like a star
01:04:09And was just like
01:04:10Really good at
01:04:11What he did
01:04:12Yeah
01:04:12He didn't chase the
01:04:14No
01:04:15He hasn't been
01:04:16He hasn't been public
01:04:17Right
01:04:18And that's something
01:04:19That's certainly
01:04:20Part of it
01:04:43Are we winding up
01:04:45For
01:04:45Triple axle
01:04:47Ah
01:04:48Jiaxin
01:04:49Oh no
01:04:50Triple flip
01:04:51Wow
01:04:54That was easy
01:04:55But you know
01:04:56Really
01:04:56When you talk about
01:04:57Lutz and flip and loop
01:04:58I mean
01:04:58Those are automatics
01:05:01They have to be automatic
01:05:02They have to be
01:05:02They're going to be
01:05:03Mistakes
01:05:03But they have to be
01:05:03Automatic
01:05:04Yeah
01:05:04There you go
01:05:05Yeah
01:05:06I mean
01:05:07Maddie knows how to do
01:05:08That triple lutz
01:05:08Triple toe
01:05:09The timing of it
01:05:10In the second half
01:05:11Of the program
01:05:11I think she doubts it
01:05:12Because it is new tour
01:05:13So it's a mental
01:05:14It's a mental
01:05:15Mental thing
01:05:15Like when you've
01:05:16Opened with that
01:05:17For your entire career
01:05:18And then it's not
01:05:19Exactly
01:05:25All right
01:05:26Free skate from
01:05:27UJ Kim
01:05:27Which means we are
01:05:28Going to see the
01:05:29Two triple axles
01:05:29Here
01:05:30Okay
01:05:31As predicted by
01:05:32Jackie Wong
01:05:34If anything gets her
01:05:36Onto the podium
01:05:37It's going to be that
01:05:38Among the top skaters
01:05:40Here
01:05:40She
01:05:41As all around
01:05:42Skating wise
01:05:43That's probably
01:05:44Her most
01:05:45Her biggest disadvantage
01:05:46Yeah
01:05:47But having
01:05:48The second highest
01:05:50Base value
01:05:51Of
01:05:52Of jumps
01:05:53Is
01:05:55Quite different
01:05:56Axle
01:05:57Toe
01:05:58Triple axles
01:05:59Triple toe
01:06:00You know
01:06:01Because the rest
01:06:01At this stage
01:06:02Is still
01:06:03Remnants of junior
01:06:04It's still
01:06:05Got some polishing
01:06:06To do
01:06:06And that's not
01:06:06A criticism
01:06:07That's just
01:06:07An analysis
01:06:08Of the graduation
01:06:09Into senior
01:06:10But when
01:06:11You're bringing
01:06:11Those big elements
01:06:12It helps you
01:06:13Let's see what happens
01:06:18There's the
01:06:19Axle again
01:06:20Two of them
01:06:20Both of those
01:06:21If they were live
01:06:23Probably going to
01:06:23Go into review
01:06:25She and her sister
01:06:26Both have had
01:06:28Like
01:06:28The tendency
01:06:29To be
01:06:30Have a cue
01:06:30On those triple axles
01:06:31Just squeaked out
01:06:40And once a skater
01:06:42Has a tendency
01:06:42To have a cue
01:06:46Focus
01:06:46The judges are going to see it
01:06:48With the magnifying glass
01:06:48They're on it
01:06:49Watching for it
01:06:51Although Isabel
01:06:52Is not doing pirates
01:06:53We have pirates here
01:06:56A lot of pirates
01:07:06It's a nice Charlotte
01:07:09Charlotte
01:07:10A lot of people
01:07:11Wouldn't know
01:07:12Americans would know
01:07:13I think most Canadians
01:07:14Is Charlotte
01:07:15I've seen footage
01:07:16Of her doing that
01:07:17Back
01:07:18Spiral
01:07:21I don't know
01:07:22If it's named
01:07:22That around the world
01:07:23Is it
01:07:23Who knows
01:07:24I mean
01:07:25That's a dick button
01:07:26Thing
01:07:26That I have
01:07:28Like he called it
01:07:29The Charlotte
01:07:30And everybody else
01:07:31That I know
01:07:31Called it the Charlotte
01:07:32Because of him
01:07:35And it was
01:07:36It was Michelle Kwan
01:07:37Back in the 90s
01:07:38Who brought it back
01:07:40And then it became
01:07:42Very popular
01:07:45These three jumps
01:07:48Big big value
01:07:49On those
01:07:54Oh wait
01:07:55We're not doing pirates
01:07:56We're doing gladiator
01:07:57No
01:07:57She went from pirates
01:07:59To gladiator
01:07:59Wasn't it
01:08:00No
01:08:00I think that was
01:08:01That was all gladiator
01:08:02Yeah
01:08:03I know
01:08:04Oh no
01:08:05You're right
01:08:05I know
01:08:06I know
01:08:06It all sounds
01:08:07The same
01:08:07It sounded
01:08:08The same
01:08:09Is it Hans Zimmer
01:08:10Both ways
01:08:11I don't know
01:08:11Exactly
01:08:21That's a jump
01:08:22She has trouble with
01:08:23Because she has
01:08:26She has a wrong edge
01:08:28Going into
01:08:28Or she has an unclear edge
01:08:30Going into that flip
01:08:31And so
01:08:32Oftentimes when you see
01:08:33Those skaters
01:08:35Who are just
01:08:35Really trying to get
01:08:37Trying to get a crack
01:08:38It changes everything
01:08:39For them
01:08:39Yeah
01:08:40It changes your timing
01:08:41It changes all
01:08:41Sometimes you think
01:08:42Let's just get the edge
01:08:43Call on this
01:08:44I know
01:08:44Keep the element
01:08:44Through
01:08:45I know
01:08:45Yeah
01:08:45It's a difficult
01:08:46Decision
01:08:53This is what I'm saying
01:08:54About her
01:08:55Her basics
01:08:56Is you see
01:08:57A contraction
01:08:59And expansion
01:09:00Of ice coverage
01:09:01For her
01:09:01That
01:09:03Is not
01:09:04Necessarily intended
01:09:06Like
01:09:06There's sometimes
01:09:07When she skates
01:09:08A lot smaller
01:09:09Than she should
01:09:10And there's sometimes
01:09:11When she's like
01:09:12Oh yeah
01:09:12I know how to skate
01:09:13Like I'm going to
01:09:13I'm going to go
01:09:14From barrier to barrier
01:09:15So it's
01:09:16It's one of those things
01:09:18That I think
01:09:18As she gets more
01:09:20Well she has
01:09:21For sure she'll get there
01:09:22Yeah for sure
01:09:23She has junior
01:09:24Speed
01:09:25And flow
01:09:26It's not senior yet
01:09:27And that's an element
01:09:28Or that's an area
01:09:29In which she will have to
01:09:31In order to be competitive
01:09:32And senior
01:09:33She's got to improve
01:09:33But that'll take time
01:09:38And there's
01:09:45Yeah we're like
01:09:45Kids in a candy store
01:09:47Here watching practice
01:09:48Yeah
01:09:51Talking about candy
01:09:52Do you have any
01:09:53Actually
01:09:55I haven't been
01:09:56I'm just kidding
01:09:58And a whole mug of coffee
01:10:00And here is
01:10:02Jiaxin
01:10:03The Jiaxin
01:10:05Mao Shimada
01:10:06Showdowns continue
01:10:07Yeah
01:10:09I love her skating
01:10:11She
01:10:12Got onto the
01:10:14Senior ranks
01:10:15Last year
01:10:16So she was able
01:10:17To go to the Olympics
01:10:19It's kind of like
01:10:20Your Rio and
01:10:21Mincu
01:10:22Yeah
01:10:22Very much
01:10:25But I think
01:10:27Last year
01:10:28It almost felt like
01:10:29At the beginning
01:10:30Of the season
01:10:30She didn't feel like
01:10:32She was quite
01:10:33There yet
01:10:34Like that she didn't
01:10:34Belong in seniors
01:10:35And then as the season
01:10:37Went on
01:10:37It got a lot better
01:10:38And I think this year
01:10:39She's starting off
01:10:40Stronger already
01:10:41It's a good point
01:10:42It's interesting
01:10:43You mention that
01:10:44Because if you don't
01:10:45Feel that you belong
01:10:46You skate like you
01:10:47Don't belong
01:10:47To a certain degree
01:10:48Because you're wondering
01:10:49Well how do I skate
01:10:50At the casino
01:10:51Right
01:10:51And that's just
01:10:52Maturity and growth
01:10:53And getting comfortable
01:10:55So
01:11:02Good speed coming
01:11:04Into the slots
01:11:06That was lovely
01:11:08Nice
01:11:29She's one of those
01:11:30Who the edge jumps
01:11:31Are not her friend
01:11:33Yeah
01:11:34Well she carries
01:11:35Really good momentum
01:11:36Straight back
01:11:37Into the lutz
01:11:37And the flip
01:11:38But on the edge jumps
01:11:39The curve is a little bit
01:11:40Dicey
01:11:55Yeah
01:11:58Johnny you were talking
01:11:59About skaters
01:12:00Who can carry the flow
01:12:02She's certainly
01:12:04One of those
01:12:04Who when
01:12:05When she's gliding
01:12:06She just doesn't lose speed
01:12:12I know she's just doing
01:12:13Forward stroking here
01:12:14But let's get to the point
01:12:17When we get there
01:12:18Yeah
01:12:18Let's get to her
01:12:19Choreographic sequence
01:12:20Because that's where
01:12:21She really shines
01:12:43That's nice to see
01:12:44That arc
01:12:44Yeah
01:12:44With a three jump
01:12:46Sequence
01:12:47Carrying
01:12:48Covering the edge
01:12:48We don't see that
01:12:49In juniors so much
01:12:50It's usually around
01:12:50The corner
01:12:52So it's really nice
01:12:52To see the ice coverage
01:12:53By the time you do
01:12:54Two double axles
01:12:55You've done
01:12:56You've done
01:12:56Two full circles
01:12:57Yeah exactly
01:13:11She recovered
01:13:12From that one
01:13:13Get that
01:13:13That back three turn
01:13:14Was a little
01:13:15A little sketchy
01:13:17And she didn't
01:13:18Let that phase her
01:13:18No
01:13:21It's you know
01:13:21That shows experience
01:13:22When things are
01:13:23A little bit off
01:13:24I mean a lot of people
01:13:25Can't see those small details
01:13:26But when we see
01:13:26Those small details
01:13:27And they don't let
01:13:28That bother them
01:13:29This is
01:13:30Now you are
01:13:31In control
01:13:32Yeah
01:13:33I mean the big mistake
01:13:34Is a big mistake
01:13:35They can't help it
01:13:36But those small ones
01:13:37Don't affect the overall
01:13:42And don't give in to them
01:13:44Yeah
01:13:44Like when it's not perfect
01:13:45Yeah
01:13:46You just don't give in to it
01:13:47You just
01:13:49You know
01:13:49Keeping the posture strong
01:13:51Allowing the momentum
01:13:52To carry you through
01:13:52Even though you may have
01:13:53Flipped your edge
01:13:54Or hit a chip of ice
01:13:55Or whatever
01:13:56You keep it going
01:14:16Really nice
01:14:17Straight back
01:14:18Layback
01:14:20It's her choreographed spin
01:14:22Yeah
01:14:23Back
01:14:23Beelman
01:14:29Nice
01:14:36That went by
01:14:37In a breeze
01:14:38Yeah
01:14:38All those skaters
01:14:43Let's see
01:14:44We can see Sarah Mode
01:14:46Warming up that triple axle
01:14:47There she is
01:14:49I think she might be
01:14:50Done with it
01:14:51Yeah
01:14:51She fell on two of them
01:14:53Oh did she
01:14:53Okay
01:14:54But they were rotated
01:14:54Oh okay
01:14:55Okay that's good
01:14:56Second one might have been a cue
01:14:57But
01:15:00Good attack going into it
01:15:02I'm so used to watching the monitor
01:15:04That I wasn't watching the ring
01:15:05You guys were looking down at the ring
01:15:06There was one point
01:15:07You were watching the monitor
01:15:08And we were both pointing
01:15:09Yeah I know
01:15:10You're pointing down the eyes
01:15:10There we go
01:15:11Here we go
01:15:12Okay here we go
01:15:13See
01:15:13Nope
01:15:14A little blockage
01:15:16Traffic blockage
01:15:17That's interesting
01:15:18Because you know
01:15:19You have enough room in there
01:15:21But the visual distraction
01:15:22Changes your time
01:15:24Yes absolutely
01:15:24So you know
01:15:25You don't get out of the way
01:15:27Because you think you're going to collide
01:15:28You just think it's mindset
01:15:30Changes your mindset
01:15:31Yeah
01:15:39Okay
01:15:40Somebody's there
01:15:40Yeah
01:15:41She's going to have to go around again
01:15:43And now you start to get a little more fatigued
01:15:46You want to get that attempt in
01:15:48Before the end of the session
01:15:49Yeah
01:15:50Once you're going around the rink a third time
01:15:53Yeah
01:15:53Okay here she goes
01:15:54She's got clean
01:15:54Let's see if she can do this
01:15:57No
01:15:58Oh no
01:15:59She's probably done too many
01:16:00Try too many
01:16:01At that point
01:16:02It was
01:16:02It's like
01:16:03Too many laps around the rink
01:16:05And you don't want to leave it
01:16:07But maybe she should
01:16:08But even coaching skaters like that
01:16:10You have to say
01:16:11Okay stop
01:16:11Yeah
01:16:11Take a moment
01:16:12Regroup
01:16:13Because now you're just getting yourself
01:16:15Yeah
01:16:15Into a frenzy
01:16:16Of circling before you jump
01:16:18Yeah
01:16:20And for a coach
01:16:22It's the worst thing to see your skaters
01:16:24Desperately going around and around
01:16:25And again
01:16:26To try
01:16:26And pop pop pop
01:16:28Yeah
01:16:28Because you know
01:16:28That's just a negative
01:16:29Yeah
01:16:29And it's also a physical memory issue
01:16:32You're just
01:16:32You're just repeating the mistake
01:16:35Right
01:16:36Easier said
01:16:37Up here in the seats
01:16:38Of course
01:16:39So let's talk a little bit
01:16:40About your skating
01:16:40Wait a second
01:16:41One moment
01:16:42Here we go
01:16:44There we go
01:16:45Triple axle
01:16:47Okay now let's move
01:16:48To your skating
01:16:49Jackie
01:16:49Do we have to
01:16:50Do you love skating
01:16:51I love skating
01:16:52On the ice
01:16:52I still try to skate
01:16:55Yeah
01:16:56I mean I started skating
01:16:57Like 30 years ago
01:16:58So it's been a long time
01:16:59Yeah
01:17:00But I
01:17:01I was a
01:17:03I was a
01:17:05Mediocre skater at best
01:17:06Okay
01:17:07But the thing that I love
01:17:08I've always loved about skating
01:17:10Is how you get there
01:17:11The technical aspects of it
01:17:13As in like
01:17:14Technique
01:17:15Right
01:17:15And how do you
01:17:16How do you go from being
01:17:18A bad skater
01:17:19To even a mediocre skater
01:17:21Right
01:17:21Like that
01:17:22That's one of the things
01:17:23That's always fascinated me
01:17:24About figure skating
01:17:25So I'm going to ask you
01:17:26How do you
01:17:28You have to
01:17:29Understand your body
01:17:31And I think that
01:17:32Is something that
01:17:33When you're a kid
01:17:34You don't
01:17:34Nobody teaches you that
01:17:36Yeah
01:17:36Yeah
01:17:37If you
01:17:37If you
01:17:38Are a kid
01:17:40As an athlete
01:17:41Who understands how to move
01:17:42Understands coordination
01:17:44Then skating
01:17:44Then skating is going to be easy
01:17:45For you
01:17:45Yeah
01:17:46If you're one of those
01:17:47Like me
01:17:47Who is like
01:17:49Inherently bad
01:17:50At hand-eye coordination
01:17:53Then it becomes
01:17:54Really frustrating
01:17:55Because you're like
01:17:56Why can't I do these things
01:17:57That I know I can do
01:17:58And do them consistently
01:18:00And so
01:18:01You know
01:18:02I've had multiple stages
01:18:03Of skating
01:18:04In my career
01:18:04Where
01:18:05My third stage
01:18:07When I was
01:18:08In my late teens
01:18:10Early 20s
01:18:11Was like actually
01:18:12Not only skating
01:18:13But also
01:18:14Apprenticing as a coach
01:18:15Oh okay
01:18:16So that I could
01:18:17Better understand
01:18:18What I was doing wrong
01:18:20I've always felt
01:18:21That as soon as
01:18:23Skaters start coaching
01:18:24A light bulb goes on
01:18:26Yeah
01:18:26And as they're trying
01:18:27To explain things
01:18:28And teach things
01:18:29In their own mind
01:18:30It's like
01:18:31That makes sense
01:18:32Yeah
01:18:33Even though you were
01:18:34Told that many times
01:18:35I think they begin
01:18:35To listen better
01:18:36Yeah
01:18:36Yeah
01:18:37Because when they're
01:18:38Sending the message
01:18:38And the kid isn't listening
01:18:39They're going
01:18:40Oh that's me
01:18:40Right
01:18:41I'm not listening
01:18:42Right
01:18:42Yeah
01:18:42Like it's
01:18:44I remember
01:18:45The first time
01:18:46That a coach
01:18:47Told me to like
01:18:48Focus on my core
01:18:50I'm like
01:18:50I'm supposed to do
01:18:51Something with my core
01:18:52It is my core
01:18:53Yeah
01:18:54Exactly
01:18:54What are you talking about
01:18:55My core is flabby
01:18:57I'm just doing things
01:18:58So it's
01:19:00That's the stuff
01:19:01That fascinates me
01:19:01And it's one of the reasons
01:19:03Why I love watching skating
01:19:04Is just like
01:19:05Understanding what
01:19:06Everybody else does
01:19:06Would you also say
01:19:07That your love of skating
01:19:09Or even for all skaters
01:19:10Is more because
01:19:12It's so damn difficult
01:19:13To do
01:19:13That when you get
01:19:14That one victory
01:19:15It's like a drug
01:19:16It's adrenaline
01:19:17And you say
01:19:18Okay
01:19:18What else can I do
01:19:19And of course
01:19:20You've got another year
01:19:20Going to get a new jump
01:19:22It is
01:19:22Absolutely
01:19:23Absolutely
01:19:33As we begin
01:19:35As we begin
01:19:36To wind down
01:19:37Second practice
01:19:38Up next
01:19:39Will be the
01:19:40Paris
01:19:41Event
01:19:42There will be
01:19:42Two groups of
01:19:43Four teams
01:19:44On the ice
01:19:45I believe
01:19:46We see
01:19:46Christian Moore
01:19:46Towers in front of us
01:19:47We're not sure
01:19:48If she'll join us
01:19:48Or not
01:19:49But one way
01:19:50Or another
01:19:50We'll figure that out
01:19:52But this has been great
01:19:53This has been good fun
01:19:55Jackie
01:19:55A good group of women
01:19:56In this
01:19:56As you mentioned
01:19:57So it's going to be
01:19:59A lot of fun to watch
01:19:59And we were missing
01:20:00Two of them
01:20:01Yes
01:20:02Exactly
01:20:02Where are they
01:20:03Maybe get another rink
01:20:04So exciting
01:20:05Yeah
01:20:07I think on Saturday
01:20:08And Sunday
01:20:09There's a good size
01:20:10Audience here
01:20:10I think Friday
01:20:11Will be a little thin
01:20:12Because you know
01:20:13It's business day
01:20:14School days
01:20:15I've also been told
01:20:16People in Cologne
01:20:17Tend to do things
01:20:18Last minute
01:20:19At the last minute
01:20:19Yeah
01:20:19So
01:20:21I know people like that
01:20:22Not even in Cologne
01:20:23Yeah
01:20:24Exactly
01:20:25But what we're going to do
01:20:26Is there's going to be
01:20:27A flood after this
01:20:27Before we go to the Paris
01:20:28And we're going to
01:20:31Through some of these
01:20:32Floods and breaks
01:20:32That we have
01:20:33We have some great interviews
01:20:34With the Canadian skaters
01:20:35Yeah
01:20:35That we've done
01:20:37Through the summer
01:20:38So
01:20:40Stay tuned
01:20:41To listen to those
01:20:47Jackie
01:20:48Thank you for joining us
01:20:49Not
01:20:49I mean you'll be here
01:20:50Every day
01:20:51In the session
01:20:51So
01:20:52You're not getting
01:20:53Run anywhere
01:20:53But
01:20:54You know
01:20:55Thank you for joining us
01:20:55We know you do this
01:20:56Or have done this
01:20:57In the United States
01:20:59Jean-Luc Baker
01:21:00You were with him
01:21:01Last year at Skate America
01:21:02He is no longer
01:21:03In the United States
01:21:04Jean-Luc Baker
01:21:04Yes
01:21:05I know
01:21:05I know
01:21:05You stole him from us
01:21:07He's in the better country
01:21:08I mean yes
01:21:11So
01:21:11Thank you for joining us
01:21:14This is going to be
01:21:15A lot of fun of course
01:21:16Not only in the practices
01:21:17But mostly in the competition
01:21:19We see some of the
01:21:20More fans coming into
01:21:21The practice sessions
01:21:22Here in Kelowna
01:21:24This is known
01:21:25For those around the world
01:21:26That may be watching this
01:21:27This is a wine area
01:21:29Of British Columbia
01:21:31And some of the great wines
01:21:32In Canada
01:21:33Come from this region
01:21:34People love to visit here
01:21:36And they have fantastic restaurants
01:21:38And wineries
01:21:38All over this area
01:21:40And this is very much
01:21:41Like a desert area
01:21:42Like it's
01:21:42On the west coast
01:21:43It's wet and rainy
01:21:44And lots of trees
01:21:45And rivers and lakes
01:21:46And here is
01:21:47On the Lake Okanagan
01:21:48It's a huge lake
01:21:49It has three cities
01:21:50Vernon, Kelowna
01:21:52And Penticton
01:21:52On that
01:21:53And it's a fruit
01:21:55Growing area
01:21:56It's a winery
01:21:56But unfortunately
01:21:57It's had a lot of
01:21:58Forest fires as well
01:21:59Because it gets very
01:22:00Very hot
01:22:01In the summer time
01:22:02Lots of ski areas
01:22:03In this part of the world
01:22:05As well
01:22:06So it's a beautiful area
01:22:07And I think people
01:22:08Like to come here
01:22:09Because it's a little bit
01:22:09More quiet
01:22:10For competition
01:22:11It's so convenient
01:22:12With a hotel
01:22:12Right across the parking lot
01:22:13We were actually here
01:22:14Just a few weeks ago
01:22:15About a month ago
01:22:16For the ISU adult
01:22:18International competition
01:22:18Yes you were in Vernon
01:22:19You were in Vernon
01:22:20And I was there
01:22:20With the adults
01:22:21There was
01:22:22I was watching that
01:22:22On June of Grand Prix
01:22:23Several hundred adults
01:22:25I can't remember
01:22:26The stats now
01:22:27Like the categories
01:22:28And over 400 skates
01:22:31And had a chance
01:22:32To speak to them
01:22:33And it's fascinating
01:22:34Their stories
01:22:35And their passion
01:22:37For skating
01:22:37I loved your interviews
01:22:38With the adults
01:22:39Because you're an adult
01:22:40You're not an adult skater
01:22:42You could be
01:22:42But you're not
01:22:43But I loved your interviews
01:22:45With them
01:22:46Because it's
01:22:46You know
01:22:47It's really the core
01:22:48Of their passion
01:22:49They could be voyeurs
01:22:50Or running businesses
01:22:51Or whatever
01:22:51They probably already
01:22:53Do both
01:22:53Yeah
01:22:53Acrobatic flight
01:22:55Oh really
01:22:56Like she did
01:22:56Aerobotics in the air
01:22:58There was a baker
01:22:59There was
01:23:00Their stories are fascinating
01:23:01But how many of them
01:23:02It was their childhood dream
01:23:03Oh wow
01:23:04To be skaters
01:23:04And they didn't start
01:23:06Until they were adults
01:23:07And they have a unique community
01:23:09Where they just cheer
01:23:11One another on
01:23:11Yeah
01:23:12No expectations
01:23:13It's a very busy event
01:23:16A very low pressure event
01:23:17Well for you
01:23:19Maybe not for them
01:23:21And I don't think
01:23:22For some of them
01:23:22It was pretty low pressure
01:23:23To be honest
01:23:24But yeah
01:23:24And they had a great time
01:23:26In wine country
01:23:27And visiting here
01:23:28Yeah no kidding
01:23:28That helped the skating
01:23:30I mean
01:23:31As I understand it
01:23:33Adult competitions
01:23:33Are all about
01:23:35Wine country
01:23:37Whether it's in wine country
01:23:38Or not
01:23:39It could be a hotel room
01:23:40Obstorfer's about beer
01:23:41Yeah
01:23:43But no
01:23:44The adult skating community
01:23:45Is amazing
01:23:45It is
01:23:46They are amazing people
01:23:48And I just love their stories
01:23:49Because I think
01:23:49You know
01:23:49They're skating
01:23:50Out there skating
01:23:51But when you find
01:23:53They're the CEO
01:23:54Of a major corporation
01:23:54Or they're a surgeon
01:23:56Or they're what
01:23:56You know
01:23:57Fire person
01:23:57Whatever
01:23:58It's just incredible
01:23:59And there's so much fun
01:24:00And so much passion
01:24:01In that
01:24:02And so much support
01:24:02In that community
01:24:03So no
01:24:05That was a great event
01:24:06To watch
01:24:06I was
01:24:06I don't know where I was
01:24:07On maybe Batumi
01:24:08Or somewhere like that
01:24:09And I was watching
01:24:10The adult skating
01:24:11As I'm at a junior grand prix
01:24:13Somewhere around the world
01:24:14It's a wine
01:24:14But Batumi's supposed
01:24:15To be really good
01:24:15Right?
01:24:16It was really good
01:24:17We went to a winery
01:24:17Actually we were taking
01:24:18By the Georgia Federation
01:24:20And we went there
01:24:20It was incredible
01:24:21There's this little mountain
01:24:23And alongside a river
01:24:25It was just a beautiful
01:24:26Part of the country
01:24:26So that was a lot of fun
01:24:28Actually that's the first time
01:24:29I think I've ever done
01:24:30Anything on the junior grand prix
01:24:31Other than the events
01:24:33Because we were there
01:24:33For an extra day
01:24:36So that was great
01:24:37Yeah people think
01:24:38You travel all over the world
01:24:39And see great
01:24:39You see many rinks
01:24:40No
01:24:40Many rinks
01:24:41And many hotels
01:24:42I know the airports
01:24:43I know the hotels
01:24:43I know the rinks
01:24:44That's it
01:24:45So before
01:24:46Yes
01:24:47Before we sign off
01:24:48We're going to
01:24:49Also the interview
01:24:51We're going to do
01:24:51Is Sarah Maud Dupuis
01:24:52Yes
01:24:52Oh perfect
01:24:53Talking about her
01:24:53Last season
01:24:54And her
01:24:55This season
01:24:58So
01:25:01And so now they're just
01:25:02Sort of
01:25:04Skating around the ice
01:25:05Getting the last few moments
01:25:07The feel of this building
01:25:08As more people
01:25:09Come into the stands
01:25:10You know
01:25:10A lot of
01:25:11You know
01:25:11Success
01:25:12You see those events
01:25:13You see those events
01:25:13That everything gets negative
01:25:14And everybody doesn't skate well
01:25:16Then you get those positive ones
01:25:17That everybody skates well
01:25:18Right
01:25:18It's contagious
01:25:19The environment is so important
01:25:21And I know that it will be
01:25:22A very positive supportive environment
01:25:24By all the fans here in Kelowna
01:25:26As they will watch the events
01:25:28Over the next three days
01:25:31So Joni
01:25:32Why don't you sign off
01:25:33And send us off
01:25:34Into the interview
01:25:35All right
01:25:35Stick around
01:25:37For pair skating
01:25:38Coming up
01:25:39After the flood
01:25:39Don't go away anywhere
01:25:40We're now going to hear
01:25:42From Sarah Maud Dupuis
01:25:48All right
01:25:48I'm here now
01:25:49With Sarah Maud Dupuis
01:25:51Senior women's
01:25:52Competitive skater
01:25:53And triple axle
01:25:55Extraordinaire
01:25:56So
01:25:57I want to start
01:25:58With last season
01:25:59Because you had
01:25:59Your new trick
01:26:01And you
01:26:02Rolled it out
01:26:03At some competitions
01:26:05How's that going?
01:26:07Yeah
01:26:07It's going great
01:26:08Yeah
01:26:09I'm happy
01:26:10The first year
01:26:12Of trying new things
