00:03:09Now I go hard
00:03:10I just gotta go hard

00:03:18Hello everyone
00:03:24Welcome back to Saskatoon
00:03:26and Day 2 coverage of Skate Canada International 2025
00:03:29We have already seen today the Rhythm Dance and the Men's Short Program
00:03:33and now we get into the metal events
00:03:34and I'm so lucky to have beside me here
00:03:37Kirsten Moore Towers to take us through this event
00:03:39and I know you've got lots of notes
00:03:41lots to say
00:03:42Let's get going
00:03:42and set up the event
00:03:43I always have lots of notes
00:03:44and lots to say
00:03:45but the first and foremost is
00:03:47how great was last night?
00:03:48It was a lot of fun
00:03:49that was for sure
00:03:50What an amazing Short Program event
00:03:52in particular from the top three
00:03:54I thought
00:03:55Yeah, no question
00:03:57and you know
00:03:57we've talked a little bit about
00:03:58you know throughout the season
00:03:59those different teams find
00:04:01it's sort of
00:04:02we don't know what's going to happen
00:04:03quite often you have a feel
00:04:04going into the season
00:04:05I don't think so much this year
00:04:07we know the good teams
00:04:08we just don't know where it's going to end up
00:04:10That's right
00:04:11In first place last night
00:04:12from Germany
00:04:13Minerva Fabian Hasse
00:04:15and Nikita Volodin
00:04:16they scored 77.53
00:04:18They are a team to watch
00:04:20tonight and beyond
00:04:21and in second and third
00:04:23two Canadian teams
00:04:24in second
00:04:24Deanna Stilato-Dudek
00:04:25and Maxim Deschamps
00:04:27with 73.03
00:04:29and in third place
00:04:30Leah Pereira and Trendy Michaud
00:04:32with perhaps the Short Program
00:04:34of their career
00:04:35I thought
00:04:35Absolutely
00:04:36Leah and Trent
00:04:37this was meant for them
00:04:40and I think it gives them confidence
00:04:41not only of course
00:04:42in the Short Program
00:04:43but also going into the free
00:04:44and sort of a
00:04:45I don't want to say a new team
00:04:46just a growing and maturing team
00:04:48An evolved team for sure
00:04:49and they scored 70.66
00:04:51and that was with a one point time deduction
00:04:53so we're in for a treat this evening
00:04:55lots of great stuff to come
00:04:57from many fantastic pairs
00:04:59And lots can happen
00:05:00we know the throws are risky
00:05:01we know the side-by-side jumps are risky
00:05:03sometimes the lifts
00:05:05you never know what can go wrong
00:05:06with that
00:05:07it's always a risky business
00:05:08pair of skating
00:05:09which is a big part of your life
00:05:11and you would know that
00:05:12no better than yourself
00:05:14that's for sure
00:05:15as we take a look at the entrance
00:05:16to the first group of skaters
00:05:19Yeah, here representing Poland
00:05:23Julia Shetnina and Mikhail Wozniak
00:05:26Not their best day yesterday
00:05:28We're taking a lot of energy
00:05:30from Mikhail here
00:05:31looking for a better day today
00:05:33and representing King of the first Canadian team
00:05:36we'll see this evening
00:05:37Kellyanne Lahain and Luka Etie
00:05:39in their first full competition
00:05:42of the season
00:05:43said they really did have a difficult off-season
00:05:46and in their Grand Prix debut
00:05:49representing Switzerland
00:05:50Oksana Boullamos and Tom Vidar
00:05:54they were fantastic
00:05:56Yeah, they were
00:05:57that was a great program for them
00:05:59this is sort of a young team
00:06:00that's moved up into seniors
00:06:02and making their way
00:06:04and it's not just about this year for them
00:06:06it's about the future
00:06:07Absolutely, I think here
00:06:13they're really in competition
00:06:14I would have told you yesterday
00:06:16they're really in competition
00:06:17with themselves
00:06:18but here they find themselves
00:06:19skating last in this first group
00:06:21and I don't think they could ask
00:06:23for too much more
00:06:24Disappointment here though
00:06:25for Anastasia and Luke
00:06:27such an uncharacteristic
00:06:28short program for them
00:06:30we saw a total misfire
00:06:32in their triple twist
00:06:33resulting in zero points
00:06:35and then just not quite able
00:06:37to mentally recover
00:06:39from that
00:06:40we see their coach
00:06:41Simon Briggs in the back
00:06:42and I think I saw
00:06:43that he had skate bugs on
00:06:45Oh, did he really?
00:06:46I think so
00:06:46Well, hello Simon
00:06:47Hi Simon
00:06:48If you can hear us
00:06:49Wishing you luck, buddy
00:06:50Yeah, you bet
00:06:50Okay, there you go
00:06:53Wow, it's so interesting
00:06:55we've seen some
00:06:56one of the things I wanted to say
00:06:58the judging I think
00:06:59has been very good
00:07:00when the skating hasn't been good
00:07:01it's reflected in the scores
00:07:03and the skating's been great
00:07:04it's reflected in the scores
00:07:05so I think the judges
00:07:06at the technical panel
00:07:07have done a good job
00:07:07I don't mean in this competition only
00:07:09I mean throughout the season so far
00:07:11You're right
00:07:12and judging panels
00:07:14and technical panels
00:07:15differ from competition
00:07:16to competition
00:07:17but what we're always looking for
00:07:18is that they're consistent
00:07:19among the event
00:07:20Within that event
00:07:21and it has been
00:07:22and the scores here
00:07:23have been a little bit lower
00:07:24than you would have seen
00:07:25perhaps in the challenges
00:07:26or whatever
00:07:26but it's been consistent
00:07:28for every skater
00:07:29and that's what you want to see
00:07:30Taking a look here
00:07:34we spoke yesterday
00:07:35Ted about how
00:07:36these pair skaters
00:07:37often
00:07:37when they're experienced
00:07:39like all teams
00:07:40in these Grand Prix events
00:07:42they will often spend
00:07:43a couple of minutes
00:07:44at the beginning
00:07:44of the warm-up
00:07:45separate
00:07:45warming up their jumps
00:07:47getting the feel
00:07:48of the ice
00:07:48getting the environment
00:07:50there are so many
00:07:52big TV lights in here
00:07:53that it can be jarring
00:07:55when you first
00:07:56enter the rink
00:07:56and now we have
00:07:57those curtains
00:07:58that the skaters
00:07:59walk out of
00:08:00and you know what
00:08:01the skaters do not
00:08:01train in this environment
00:08:02they train in a cold
00:08:04sometimes damp rink
00:08:05early in the morning
00:08:06or late at night
00:08:07or whatever
00:08:07they come into this
00:08:08it's a completely
00:08:09different environment
00:08:10you have to sort of
00:08:11get used to that
00:08:12and we want to welcome
00:08:13into the broadcast
00:08:13those fans
00:08:14there in the stadium
00:08:16that are listening
00:08:16on Skate Bug Radio
00:08:17we welcome into the broadcast
00:08:18I'm Ted Barton
00:08:20along with
00:08:20Kirsten Moore Towers
00:08:22and taking you through
00:08:23this pair event
00:08:24so welcome to
00:08:25Skate Canada International
00:08:27here
00:08:28as we take a look
00:08:29at Oxana
00:08:30and Tom
00:08:32and hear a little bit
00:08:35about their background
00:08:36now I wanted to ask
00:08:37I did ask you
00:08:38this question yesterday
00:08:39I want to ask it again
00:08:40you know
00:08:40can you ever
00:08:41overtrain a program
00:08:42you know what
00:08:44I think
00:08:44you can't
00:08:45overtrain cardio
00:08:46you can never have
00:08:47too much cardio training
00:08:48you certainly can
00:08:49overtrain in general
00:08:51we want to make sure
00:08:52we have that good mix
00:08:53of training
00:08:54and recovery time
00:08:55especially as we get
00:08:56a little bit older
00:08:57in sport
00:08:58but I think
00:08:59for the program
00:09:00we want to maintain
00:09:01the spark
00:09:02and the magic
00:09:03and the choreography
00:09:04and sometimes
00:09:05if the movement
00:09:06and the choreography
00:09:08is overtrained
00:09:09you lose that feeling
00:09:10a little bit
00:09:11yeah
00:09:11it's finding that balance
00:09:12now also for those fans
00:09:13live in the audience
00:09:14there and all those
00:09:15online as well
00:09:16what are the big elements
00:09:17if they don't know much
00:09:18about skating
00:09:19what are the big elements
00:09:20to watch for
00:09:21the riskiest elements
00:09:22if you will
00:09:22that you might
00:09:23see a mistake on
00:09:25in the pairs free program
00:09:26yeah it's a great question
00:09:28and the answer
00:09:30kind of differs
00:09:30a little bit
00:09:31the elements
00:09:31in pair skating
00:09:32that are worth the most
00:09:33are the lifts
00:09:34and the twists
00:09:35skaters
00:09:36and the twist
00:09:37when completing it
00:09:38at a level 4
00:09:39with a great grade
00:09:40of execution
00:09:40can earn
00:09:41upwards of 8 points
00:09:43on the elements
00:09:43and same with the lifts
00:09:44the elements
00:09:45that we more see
00:09:46more often see mistakes
00:09:48on are the jumps
00:09:49the side by side
00:09:49jumping elements
00:09:50and the throw elements
00:09:52and so we have
00:09:53two of each of those
00:09:54in the free program
00:09:56event
00:09:57and just explain
00:09:58for the audience
00:09:59what makes those
00:10:00so difficult
00:10:00for the skaters
00:10:01well for jumping elements
00:10:03I think we're
00:10:04we're often have
00:10:05this misunderstood idea
00:10:07of if you can do
00:10:09a double axle
00:10:10on your own
00:10:10you can easily do it
00:10:11beside somebody else
00:10:12but there are such
00:10:13a myriad of factors
00:10:14that go into
00:10:14the timing of
00:10:16completing it
00:10:17with your partner
00:10:17and someone
00:10:19in your personal space
00:10:20which can be
00:10:21really challenging
00:10:21and we actually saw
00:10:22Deanna say
00:10:24in an interview
00:10:24yesterday
00:10:25that they had been
00:10:26working on
00:10:27the timing
00:10:27of the side by side
00:10:29triple toe loop
00:10:30and it didn't quite
00:10:31pan out for them
00:10:32in the short
00:10:32so when we're
00:10:33in competition
00:10:35sometimes the success
00:10:36of that
00:10:36with adrenaline
00:10:37and with nerves
00:10:38changes
00:10:38and with throws
00:10:40it's so much
00:10:41about timing
00:10:42and often
00:10:42it is about the man
00:10:44and how he is
00:10:46throwing the woman
00:10:47I will say that
00:10:48okay there you go
00:10:49it is true
00:10:49it is absolutely true
00:10:50I want to ask you
00:10:51another question
00:10:52you know
00:10:53how much do you
00:10:54notice your partner
00:10:55on side by side jumps
00:10:56or even skating
00:10:56side by side
00:10:57you know
00:10:58you may not see them
00:10:59directly
00:10:59because they're beside you
00:11:00do you see them
00:11:01in your peripheral vision
00:11:02and how do you know
00:11:03they're in step with you
00:11:04a lot of the time
00:11:06you can
00:11:06it depends
00:11:07it depends on
00:11:08the geography
00:11:08of where you have
00:11:09the jump placed
00:11:10on the ice
00:11:11but typically
00:11:12you'll know
00:11:13if your partner
00:11:14was successful
00:11:15on the jump
00:11:15doing perhaps
00:11:16like a triple
00:11:17or if they popped
00:11:18into a double
00:11:18based on the timing
00:11:19of when they are
00:11:20landing that jump
00:11:22but sometimes you don't
00:11:23I've celebrated
00:11:24a clean program
00:11:24before jumping up
00:11:26and down
00:11:26and had my partner
00:11:27say to me
00:11:27oh I doubled
00:11:28the south cow
00:11:29it happens
00:11:30so that's a question
00:11:31that maybe some of the fans
00:11:32would like to know
00:11:33do you ever speak to
00:11:34or what type of communication
00:11:35might happen
00:11:36or does happen
00:11:37in a program
00:11:38and not only in
00:11:40pair skating
00:11:40it could be an ice dance
00:11:41as well
00:11:41but for you
00:11:42was there any communication
00:11:44in a program
00:11:44well I don't know
00:11:46if you know this
00:11:46about me
00:11:47but I'm pretty chatty
00:11:48no
00:11:49really
00:11:50jeez
00:11:51I didn't
00:11:51but I will say
00:11:52I think
00:11:53everyone's different
00:11:54but I think in general
00:11:54most of the communication
00:11:56happens when
00:11:57it's not going as well
00:11:58actually
00:11:59when you're
00:12:00having to
00:12:01communicate
00:12:01with your partner
00:12:03to continue
00:12:03the encouragement
00:12:04and
00:12:05to help them
00:12:06keep going
00:12:07okay
00:12:07good information
00:12:09lovely
00:12:10lovely to have you here
00:12:12so we can
00:12:12get inside
00:12:14the head
00:12:14of a pair skater
00:12:16it's a scary place
00:12:17it is
00:12:18sounds like it is
00:12:21it is
00:12:22a scary
00:12:23risky
00:12:23beautiful
00:12:24fantastic
00:12:25incredible
00:12:25discipline
00:12:26I know it's your favorite
00:12:27it's one of my favorites
00:12:28as well
00:12:29and here we go
00:12:30a medal event
00:12:33the first medal event

00:12:40they are certainly
00:12:42looking to rebound
00:12:43after a disappointing
00:12:44short last night
00:12:45they had a great
00:12:46practice this morning
00:12:47they look ready

00:14:56I know it hurts
00:15:19It's hard to breathe sometimes
00:15:24These nights are long
00:15:31You've lost the will to fight
00:15:36Is anybody out there?
00:15:43Can you lead me to the light?
00:15:49Is anybody out there?
00:15:56Tell me it'll all be alright
00:16:01I know it'll be alright
00:16:06I know it'll be alright
00:16:10I know it'll be alright
00:16:15I know it'll be alright
00:16:19I know it'll be alright
00:16:21I know it'll be alright
00:16:26I know it'll be alright
00:16:30You are not alone
00:16:42I've been hearing them all the time
00:16:47Sing a new song
00:16:49I know it hurts
00:16:51I know it hurts
00:16:52It's hard to breathe sometimes
00:16:56Is anybody out there?
00:16:57Is anybody out there?
00:16:59I know it hurts
00:17:03It hurts
00:17:04It's hard to breathe sometimes
00:17:08I know it hurts
00:17:09I know it hurts
00:17:11I know it hurts
00:17:13That was really nice
00:17:20You know what?
00:17:21What?
00:17:22Sometimes
00:17:23It's not about
00:17:25Sometimes it's not about the winner
00:17:28And so often it is
00:17:29It's about the medals and the win
00:17:31And this team won't win here
00:17:33They likely won't get a medal
00:17:35But so much of sport
00:17:37And what makes sport special for me
00:17:38Is a great recovery
00:17:40From something that was so challenging
00:17:42For them yesterday
00:17:43And you can see that emotion
00:17:45Yes
00:17:46In the team
00:17:47And in me
00:17:48Yeah
00:17:50You know
00:17:51You've almost got a tear
00:17:53Because you know what that feels like
00:17:54When you have a disaster throw program
00:17:56The night before
00:17:57How do you work your next 24 hours
00:18:00To make yourself believe
00:18:01And to get yourself
00:18:02Your mindset set
00:18:03So that you can
00:18:04Come off the ice happy
00:18:06And full of joy
00:18:07With what you're able to perform
00:18:08Regardless of the scores
00:18:09Or the placement
00:18:10And that is one of the hardest things
00:18:12About figure skating truly
00:18:14And about competing with two programs
00:18:16Is rebounding from one that's tough
00:18:18This
00:18:19Really the main issue for this team
00:18:21Yesterday
00:18:22They only got a single in
00:18:23Today
00:18:24Triple twist done at a level three
00:18:26They earned six and a half points on it
00:18:28And you could see a little smile there from Anna
00:18:30A real much better start
00:18:32Today
00:18:33Looking here at their jump series
00:18:36Double axle
00:18:37Double axle
00:18:38Single axle
00:18:39It's hard to time three double axles
00:18:42Or three jumps
00:18:43Together
00:18:44They did a pretty good job
00:18:45I thought
00:18:46Here the throw triple loop
00:18:47Super solid
00:18:48Nice strong up
00:18:52That's right
00:18:53This is their group five axle lift
00:18:55Teams will do three lifts
00:18:57Often we'll see two in the group five variety
00:19:00Because they are worth the most points
00:19:02And here the final risk element if you will
00:19:06The throw triple saukau
00:19:07What a great save
00:19:08And she holds on to it
00:19:09What a great save
00:19:10This is a program that the team has recycled from last season
00:19:15And they felt like it worked really well for them
00:19:17They had great feedback
00:19:18And most importantly Anna told me they really loved training it
00:19:22And felt they could continue to improve it
00:19:24I think they're already starting to do that
00:19:27Look at Simon has the ear bug in
00:19:30There it is skate bug
00:19:31There he is
00:19:32The two thumbs up you can hear us
00:19:33There you go buddy
00:19:34Haven't you seen you for a while
00:19:36Great ISU technical specialist as well
00:19:38So let's take a look at the scores for this team
00:19:42Had a great great free program
00:19:44Tough short program
00:19:46Redemption here on this day
00:19:48They have a 104.97 season's best
00:19:50Let's take a look at this score here
00:19:52I think they're going to be happy with this
00:19:57Don't you?
00:19:58I think they might be happy
00:19:59Simon we have an idea here
00:20:00Take a listen
00:20:01There it is
00:20:02119.09 a season's best
00:20:05That puts Anastasia and Luc
00:20:07In the first place of course
00:20:09They're the first team out
00:20:11But what a great skate
00:20:12Really well done
00:20:13Great recovery
00:20:14They'll learn so much
00:20:15From this event
00:20:16There is a look at our next team
00:20:23And they represent Poland
00:20:25Julia, Czajina and Mika Wozniak
00:20:31Julia and Michael are looking for a cleaner skate today
00:20:34In this high energy free program
00:20:37Choreographed by Mark Pillay and Paul Bull
00:20:39And Paul Bull
00:20:40I love it
00:20:41I think it's going to be a great free program for them by the Olympics
00:20:44And Mark has worked with you guys before
00:20:46For many years
00:20:47He's great
00:20:48He's from out here in British Columbia
00:20:49A wonderful choreographer
00:20:50They will skate
00:20:51The free program to Reel Around the Sun by Bill Whalen
00:20:54To be continued
00:20:55To be continued
00:20:56To be continued
00:20:57To be continued
00:20:59To be continued
00:21:29To be continued
00:21:59To be continued
00:22:29To be continued
00:22:59To be continued
00:23:29To be continued
00:23:59To be continued
00:24:29To be continued
00:24:59To be continued
00:25:01To be continued
00:25:02To be continued
00:25:05To be continued
00:25:06To be continued
00:25:14Oh, well you can see on Yulia's face that
00:25:16that was difficult.
00:25:18There were certainly highlights in this program but
00:25:21really up and down which unfortunately Ted
00:25:24kind of takes you out of the moment.
00:25:26Yeah.
00:25:27Yeah and the down parts were a little bit awkward.
00:25:28to a little bit awkward in between not necessarily on the big elements and
00:25:32but just little stumbles here and there little crashes and
00:25:36this piece of music reel around the sun takes so much precision and energy and repetition and
00:25:44it seems to be a little bit early in the season for this program to really thrive
00:25:48i stand by what i said i think it will be a great program for this team but
00:25:52unfortunately when little mistakes happen it's really really hard to not get pulled out of it
00:25:57and you can see that from their response they know yeah for sure and i think it is a great program
00:26:02this is that's not a question of course how you present it on the day you know is the difficulty
00:26:08but this is a good program well designed great energy she has a wonderful smile throughout the
00:26:12whole program but some challenges and if you saw during the program on the top left corner of your
00:26:19screen you will see that that element box and when it looks like christmas unfortunately you don't want
00:26:26red no you don't you want to see all green that was the triple twist that was green in at a level
00:26:31three really well done but unfortunately when it's red it means that it's in with a negative grade of
00:26:37execution and these negative grades of execution really add up and take a lot away from your total
00:26:44score yeah that will take the score or numbers off of your base value so if you see red box up in the
00:26:51left hand part of your screen that means they're losing points on the base value of that element
00:26:56green means they're adding points gray means it's just neutral yeah that's right and and these qual
00:27:01oh that was tough yeah these quality marks these these this technical panel is looking for
00:27:08the very good height and good length on jumps good takeoff and landing effortless throughout so
00:27:15when you look at some of these features that the technical panel is looking for it would have been hard to
00:27:21award julia and michael with those grade of execution points today not always yeah just today today
00:27:28and that's what can change from competition to competition great program can be delivered
00:27:33clean and beautiful in the next day you can have a bunch of stumbles so that's what makes the season
00:27:38long and the challenge is many and the free program is challenging there's a lot in a free program it's so
00:27:46difficult mentally and physically well let's take a look at their scores they have a 108.18
00:27:53season's best and on this day it's probably not going to match that it's a 103.46 that will put them
00:28:00second of course they've got some good skill on this day too many mistakes to catch up to their season's
00:28:08best that's right it's a good you know not a starting point they've competed already this season but it can
00:28:15show them kind of where they're at and where they can go from here that's the only choice
00:28:19and there's our next team representing canada kellyann lauren duca etier this free program is inspired by
00:28:29the theme of communication between two people in love through their choreography and their composition
00:28:35they are aiming to express every aspect of a couple or team's journey so look for that program
00:28:43communication and telling during the choreography as they will skate to say something in the turmoil of love
00:28:51so
00:28:57so
00:28:59so
00:29:01so
00:32:35Say something, I'm giving up on you
00:32:46Say something
00:33:05You know what Ted, I really enjoyed this free program from this team
00:33:19It's the first time I've seen it
00:33:20I spoke a little bit yesterday about how this is their first event of the season
00:33:24Because they had to withdraw mid-six minute warm-up of a free program at a summer event
00:33:30Because Kellyanne was cut by Lucas Blade
00:33:32She needed three stitches, the cut got infected
00:33:35It was a whole mess
00:33:36But they're back here
00:33:38They've struggled in practice a little bit
00:33:40And I thought today in this free program
00:33:42They really had a great showing
00:33:44You mentioned to me that this is a much more mature team
00:33:47And that there's a number of things that go into that
00:33:49But certainly skating together more emotionally, more in sync
00:33:53There's still some technical mistakes there
00:33:55But there's a better feeling
00:33:57There's more cohesiveness
00:33:58Yeah, I see the effort
00:33:59I see what they're trying to do
00:34:01They're looking at their triple twist
00:34:04In at a level two
00:34:05Missing two features
00:34:06One of them is certainly going to be the split
00:34:08We're not seeing a split feature on the way up
00:34:10Here, watch Kellyanne
00:34:13It's a little bit swingy
00:34:15It's been a little bit difficult in practice
00:34:17So they did have two
00:34:18It goes in as a fall actually
00:34:20Oh dear
00:34:21They had two single exos planned after
00:34:23Which they won't obviously
00:34:25They didn't complete
00:34:26Here, the throw triple loop
00:34:28That was good
00:34:30Beautifully done
00:34:31One of the best elements of this program for sure
00:34:33Group five reverse lift
00:34:35And I love the dismount
00:34:40The difficult exit of this lift
00:34:42And staying in character as well
00:34:46Here, that final throw
00:34:49Little bit off axis
00:34:51Slight touchdown for Kellyanne
00:34:54So it is in at a slight minus in grade of execution
00:34:57But my favorite part of this program was the choreo sequence
00:35:00Which is the last element we saw
00:35:02It's a mandatory level one for all skaters
00:35:05But I really am seeing this new maturity in them
00:35:09And I think it will continue to grow
00:35:11Oh totally
00:35:11And what was cool
00:35:12Is they were both nodding their head
00:35:13At the end of that program
00:35:15Even with the mistakes
00:35:16They said, okay, we're on the right track here
00:35:18So that was nice to see
00:35:20They have a season's best of 118.12
00:35:24And this is going to fall short on that
00:35:27With the mistakes
00:35:27There was a lot of hand downs
00:35:29That's costly on
00:35:30Yeah, a lot of little minuses here and there
00:35:32But they didn't have a starting place
00:35:34They needed a starting place
00:35:36It is so difficult
00:35:37When you don't know where you stand
00:35:38You haven't been able to put the program out
00:35:40In front of anybody
00:35:41And
00:35:42And for this team
00:35:44They really need to think about
00:35:45Just themselves
00:35:46And just improving their score
00:35:48Because I think Olympic
00:35:49You've got two other good teams here in Canada
00:35:51They're only two spots
00:35:53You can't get focused on that goal
00:35:55It's in the back of your mind
00:35:56Do what you can control
00:35:58And that's continuing to get better
00:36:00And this is a better program
00:36:01For them, I think
00:36:03Absolutely
00:36:03I mean, in theory
00:36:04You're correct
00:36:05It just feels so impossible
00:36:07To do that
00:36:08But you never know
00:36:09You know?
00:36:10Of course
00:36:10Of course you never know
00:36:13Well, the free program scores
00:36:19Are 108.31
00:36:21That is second in the free program
00:36:23With a total competition score
00:36:25Of 168.24
00:36:28And that, for the moment at least
00:36:29Will put them into first place
00:36:31And take a look at these component scores
00:36:34This second mark
00:36:35Kellyanne and Luka had 53
00:36:37Keep checking in on that
00:36:39As we move forward
00:36:40That's where you'll see
00:36:41A lot of the difference
00:36:42In scores
00:36:43As these teams continue to
00:36:45Well, here's this team
00:36:46From Switzerland
00:36:47They're skating last
00:36:48In the first group
00:36:49Oksana
00:36:50Valiamus
00:36:51And Tom Bobak
00:36:52They had an impressive
00:36:54Grand Prix debut
00:36:55In the short program
00:36:56Last night
00:36:57And they looked fantastic
00:36:58In practice this morning
00:37:00This team are quickly
00:37:01Setting themselves up
00:37:02To be a team
00:37:03To watch in the future
00:37:04And they'll skate the free program
00:37:06To kind of a funny title
00:37:07But it's called
00:37:09Club to Death
00:37:10To be a team
00:37:24Asha
00:37:25Master
00:37:26The
00:37:26Those
00:37:27We all
00:37:28Generate
00:37:29The
00:37:29clones
00:37:30The
00:37:30The
00:37:31The
00:37:31The
00:37:32The
00:37:32The
00:37:33The
00:37:34The
00:37:35The
00:37:35The
00:37:36The
00:37:37The
00:37:38The
00:37:39The
00:37:39I don't know.
00:38:09I don't know.
00:38:39I don't know.
00:39:09I don't know.
00:39:39I don't know.
00:40:09I don't know.
00:40:39I don't know.
00:41:09I don't know.
00:41:39I don't know.
00:42:09I don't know.
00:42:10I don't know.
00:42:11They usually do this really cool through the legs thing and, you know, for whatever reason, it wasn't there in the program.
00:42:18But, you know, this team, I mentioned they're a team to watch.
00:42:22I don't know.
00:42:23I don't know.
00:42:24I don't know.
00:42:25I don't know.
00:42:26I don't know.
00:42:27I don't know.
00:42:28I don't know.
00:42:29I don't know.
00:42:30I don't know.
00:42:31I don't know.
00:42:32I don't know.
00:42:33I don't know.
00:42:34I don't know.
00:42:35I don't know.
00:42:36I don't know.
00:42:37I don't know.
00:42:38I don't know.
00:42:39I don't know.
00:42:40I don't know.
00:42:41I don't know.
00:42:42I don't know.
00:42:43I don't know.
00:42:44You should be sure.
00:42:45Well, I'm sure.
00:42:46Watch this.
00:42:47Huge triple twist level four.
00:42:49Huge grade of execution.
00:42:51Now, here, watch Tom.
00:42:52Supposed to do a triple toe.
00:42:54That's only a double.
00:42:55So, that's all the team will get credit for.
00:42:57and then they do side-by-side double axel and then a single to finish but that is obviously
00:43:03in with a negative grade of execution here their group five reverse lift change of position
00:43:08oxana grip grabs her blade it's her difficult feature and the difficult exit that's in at a
00:43:15level four i thought this back outside desk barrel was wonderfully done it's in at a level three so
00:43:22they you're right they do have some great basics oxana has tried throw quads with her former
00:43:28partner she seems to be quite fearless this was a little bit of a tough fall she took a tough fall
00:43:35this morning and practice on that same element as well and sometimes that can be timing sometimes
00:43:40it can be nerves here the throw triple loop same thing left side gets too far back she's on two
00:43:46feet she's a little bit swingy both of those elements are getting a minus in grade of execution
00:43:52the throw triple soukow obviously also taking the one point fall deduction the throw triple loop just
00:43:58quite a large minus much more to come from this team 21 and 23 years old so they've got another
00:44:04quad another four years certainly to go and um and i want to ask you a question after we see these
00:44:10scores in on the next warm-up their free program score is 104.40 for oxana and tom that is third in
00:44:20the free program with a total competition score of 165.94 that will put them third
00:44:25for the moment
00:44:29and they're capable of so much more but as we talked about they're a young team
00:44:36just coming out of junior give this another couple of years i think this will be a totally
00:44:40different team for sure tons of room to grow yeah question quickly so in ice dance you know um
00:44:47oh god you're asking me an ice dance no no no but the point is is like if you get you get a level two
00:44:52for one level three for the other okay that's fine but here if you get a double and the other one does
00:44:56a triple you only get the you only get the scores of the double that's correct should it be
00:45:02you get the addition of the triple plus the double um gosh that feels like it's complicating it even
00:45:09further it's not already the mouth the mouth is already made the mouth is nothing i get it i get
00:45:15it i don't know it's i guess maybe because i grew up with it in the way of you know you just kind of
00:45:20get the lesser value of the two elements it's fine but i'll think about it i'll come back to you
00:45:25you're going okay whatever there's ellie cammon danny o'shea and here we take a look at
00:45:29lea panera perera and trent michaud from canada and also teammates diana stiletto dudik and maxim
00:45:39and the leaders after the short program from germany minerva fabian hasay and nikita bulliden
00:45:52i think this will be a great group ted we have a couple of pair teams that have been on the world
00:46:06podium we have a pair team that's hungry to be on the world podium and and you know the first team
00:46:12out ellie cam and danny o'shea have been at the grand prix final they've done wonderful things in
00:46:16in pair skating for the united states and so i think we're in for a treat here would you say that
00:46:22pair skating when i talk about risky i don't mean risky from a danger perspective but would
00:46:26is it fair to say that this might be the riskiest from a mistake perspective discipline in the sport
00:46:32of figure skating it's hard to say i think they're in dance there are ton there can be tons of little
00:46:38mistakes that are hard to spot the thing about pair skating is most commonly the mistakes are easy to
00:46:44see right if you're falling down you know that that wasn't supposed to happen sometimes of course
00:46:48on a desk barrel maybe the untrained eye might not see it but that's one of the things i like about
00:46:53pair skating is it can be fairly straightforward in that regard obviously it's a it's a human judge
00:46:59sport so there's always discrepancies here and there but so it's a little easier for the fans to
00:47:06sort of have a better idea i think so i think so that was my point but anyways sorry no no no my no no
00:47:14is an ice dance it's a little bit more complicated you're absolutely right you nailed it you got it
00:47:18right
00:47:18taking a look at leah ferrera and trent michaud brand new costumes for their free program
00:47:27i think leah's is not brand new just a little bit altered
00:47:31so there's a question for you because i've been asked the question we've had this discussion before
00:47:37how important or do costumes you know how how do they impact performance well i mean it's part of
00:47:45the the whole package it's it's part of the the image that you're creating in the story that you're
00:47:51telling and it's art it's a piece of the art and and an important one i think and so it can add to
00:47:58and take away as well if you've got a costume that people are going only looking at going well that's
00:48:03weird so they're not watching the rest of the program right yeah it can be distracting for
00:48:08sure it absolutely can and it can be you know we've seen costume malfunctions where the costume
00:48:14makes a certain element difficult to complete but all of these skaters have trained in practice in
00:48:20their costumes so we shouldn't see any surprises by the time we get to competition
00:48:23okay looking here at diana stellato dudek
00:48:27and minerva fabian and maria is this the first time i've ever seen her with her hair down
00:48:34in competition diana diana yeah this season this season i believe is the first time
00:48:40yes um and i love it i i think it goes great with the program and
00:48:46i love a different hairstyle okay okay back to pairs well it's all part of it you talk about the package
00:48:55you're right we've spoken a little bit about the elements teams will all do one triple twist and
00:49:03as we spoke about yesterday most if not all teams will do the twist first they will do two jumping
00:49:09elements one can be a combination or a series two throws one pair combination spin one death spiral
00:49:16one choreo sequence and three lifts okay this is an exhausting discipline really for both skaters for
00:49:23the the man who's lifting and throwing but for the woman who's got to stay so strong and the lifts
00:49:29and on the throws as well and the end of the program i can't imagine how exhausted you are
00:49:34for sure it's it's physically and mentally exhausting and it almost never feels easy i think that's something
00:49:42that sometimes audience members are not super aware of when you see someone put on a beautiful clean performance
00:49:48you think that it looks so seamless and easy and often more often than not little things feel a little
00:49:55bit off and the best athletes will learn to disguise that and mask that in a way that's going to get
00:50:00them the scores they're looking for so we talked about physically and psychologically difficult and
00:50:06challenging so why did you love it so much the thrill of it i think okay i also really enjoyed experiencing
00:50:13highs and lows with another person that was really special and and i was lucky to have great partners
00:50:18that made that enjoyable yeah the teamwork yeah teamwork with your partner with your coaches and
00:50:25you know i don't really miss competing ted but i do miss the teamwork oh okay well you are in teamwork
00:50:31because you are a leader now of a group of young pair teams coming up with a fellow coach as well and
00:50:36doing such a great job and how do you find that just briefly mention about your coaching now now that
00:50:41you're on the other side of the fence or the boards as it is what are your thoughts on coaching versus
00:50:45skating well it's so much harder than i ever anticipated i'd like to formally apologize to all
00:50:51of my coaches there you go um yeah it just it feels like a huge responsibility to uh especially with young
00:50:59kids nice throw triple south cow there from tiana especially with young athletes who are so impressionable
00:51:05at such a an important time of their lives to assist them in becoming great humans as well as great
00:51:11athletes and making the right choice it's it's not always it is it's not always easy to trust that
00:51:16you're making the right choice and i have a lot of respect for coaches at this level who have guided
00:51:22these humans and athletes to such great success and now you're going to be a mom yes and so that's
00:51:29coming soon yeah it is and you are that is really exciting for you i think you're going to be a great
00:51:33mom you're a great coach so thank you you know you might doubt yourself as we all do as parents and
00:51:38coaches and but um you know keeping positive and helping the kids protecting them and also
00:51:43helping them become the best they can be and sometimes that takes a little bit of
00:51:48i don't know if the right word is discipline but encouraging plus supporting them to test out
00:51:54how good they can be that's right
00:52:00it's all about experiences right and and even at this level the experiences that this these athletes
00:52:05have had have led them to be this person who's on the ice at skate canada international who who thrives
00:52:12and deals with challenges and and i think that's one of the most beautiful parts of of sport
00:52:19is
00:52:26so
00:52:32okay all the teams except for the first team out in this group
00:52:36put their guards on and some of them have to just be patient and calm and wait their turn and that
00:52:41can be also a challenge in what you're thinking and feeling of course as we take a look at our first
00:52:47team in group number two 20 year old ellie cam 34 year old danielle o'shea i like this free program
00:52:55ted they wanted to skate to something strong bold and fun that the audience can get behind they are still
00:53:02recovering from injury but hoping to show progress here
00:53:05they will start their free program skating to sweet dreams
00:53:20sweet dreams are made of things
00:53:35who am i to decide i travel the world in the seven seas
00:53:55everybody's looking for something
00:54:03some of them want to be used by you
00:54:08some of them want to abuse you
00:54:12some of them want to be
00:54:15some of them want to be used by you
00:54:22some of them to be used by you
00:54:24some of them want me to stay
00:57:35Well, that is the Ellie and Danny that we know, Ted.
00:57:39That was amazing.
00:57:40It looks like they're getting a standing ovation here in Saskatoon.
00:57:45That was wonderful.
00:57:46Danny was smiling for about 45 seconds before the end of the program.
00:57:50He knew he had a good one.
00:57:51She was focused until one time you saw that smile break out.
00:57:54That's right.
00:57:55That's right.
00:57:56The choreo sequence.
00:57:57You know, we mentioned yesterday that they had a really hard off season, Ted, two surgeries
00:58:02for Danny.
00:58:04He'd skated on a broken foot at the world championships.
00:58:06Wow.
00:58:07And this team was an integral part for the U.S. earning the possibility to get three spots to
00:58:15the Olympic Games.
00:58:16And the throws have been challenging for Ellie and Danny.
00:58:21And they were great today.
00:58:24Well, you said during the skate that this was the best case scenario for this team at this
00:58:29time.
00:58:29That's right.
00:58:30That's right.
00:58:31And Coach Drew Meekins told me that they really are planning to peak the second half
00:58:35of the season, but they are healthy now and they want to show progress.
00:58:39Just sometimes that takes a little bit of time, right?
00:58:42Well, this might be a peak, but they might rise this peak even higher later in the season.
00:58:46Here, a triple twist, level three.
00:58:48Looks like they're just missing the catch feature.
00:58:50That means the man has to catch the woman cleanly on her hips with no other body part
00:58:54touching.
00:58:56Looking here at the triple sow cow.
00:59:00Double axle.
00:59:01This is in on the quarter.
00:59:03So they're getting a slight reduction in grade of execution on that.
00:59:07Here, throw triple flip.
00:59:09She hangs on to it.
00:59:11It doesn't have the most flow that we'll see from all of the teams and throw triple loop.
00:59:17This one was better.
00:59:18But for Ellie and Danny, this is a huge win.
00:59:21She's still getting comfortable, truly.
00:59:24That a signature entry into this group four lift.
00:59:27Change of position.
00:59:29Difficult one hand.
00:59:31Danny on one arm for two revolutions.
00:59:34That's in at a level four.
00:59:35And that their final lift.
00:59:46That was the group five axle lift.
00:59:48It's in at a level three.
00:59:49So they did miss one feature.
00:59:53And look at that smile by both.
00:59:55That was a victory on this day.
00:59:57No matter what the score is, kind of irrelevant to some degree as they try to build towards
01:00:01Olympics.
01:00:02But you know what?
01:00:02I think they'll have a pretty good score here, Ted.
01:00:05Their program components are typically quite good.
01:00:10Well, their personal best is 131.07.
01:00:16That was from last season, I believe.
01:00:19This score is a 133.63.
01:00:22And that will put them into first place.
01:00:24It is a season's best.
01:00:26And I think that's the best they could skate on this day.
01:00:28They're happy with that.
01:00:29Absolutely.
01:00:30And they should be.
01:00:34Really well done.
01:00:36Congratulations to the whole team.
01:00:37It's not easy to recover from an injury.
01:00:40And it takes a lot of teamwork and a lot of patience.
01:00:43Looks like they've been guided really well by their team.
01:00:45Ellie and Danny, just five points behind Leah and Trent, our next team.
01:00:49They represent Canada.
01:00:51She's 21.
01:00:51He's 29.
01:00:53This is the first Grand Prix of the season.
01:00:55They're looking confident, had perhaps the short program of their careers so far last night.
01:01:01Can they repeat, Ted, in the free program this evening to continue this forward momentum in this Olympic season?
01:01:08We will soon find out as the, I don't want to say the pressure mounts, the anticipation does as they skate their free program.
01:01:16We will soon find out as the, I don't want to say the pressure mounts.
01:01:46We will soon find out as the future Fitness.
01:01:46We will soon be able to release now.
01:08:12Yeah.
01:08:38interesting they have the support and work of great choreographer Lori Nichols she's done so
01:08:43many brilliant programs for so many good skaters around the world and I think this is going to pay
01:08:49off very well in the long term and we get it to see it at least me for the first time this season
01:08:55right now
01:09:08so
01:09:20so
01:09:24so
01:21:31Minerva, Fabian Hassan, Nikita Volodin of Germany finished their free program here
01:21:38at Skate Canada International.
01:21:40It was a little bit difficult, Ted.
01:21:42It was not the free program consistency that we have seen from this team in the past.
01:21:50Well, and interesting because we talked offline a little bit, but I can put you on the spot.
01:21:54We talked about the program itself.
01:21:56Forget about the technical stuff.
01:21:57You'll take us through that.
01:21:58What's your feeling about the program?
01:22:01You know what?
01:22:02It's perhaps unfair, but I'm comparing it to their free program from last season to four seasons
01:22:08that had energy and build and I connected to it.
01:22:11And this one, perhaps because there were mistakes or perhaps because it was early in the season,
01:22:16I'm not quite getting that same feeling that I had from last season.
01:22:21And it doesn't take away from how wonderful and fantastic this team is,
01:22:27but it doesn't feel as Olympic to me, quite honestly.
01:22:31Here, the triple twist.
01:22:34No split feature, but a beautiful soft landing.
01:22:38This was so bizarre.
01:22:39Watch Nikita.
01:22:40He landed and then his free foot kind of got stuck on the ice.
01:22:44That's very uncharacteristic.
01:22:46They will lose about six points on that element, but they rebounded so well here with a triple
01:22:52sow cow.
01:22:53Minerva so solid on the throw triple loop and no different today here than we saw yesterday.
01:23:01Wonderfully done.
01:23:02Here, the group five reverse.
01:23:05It's in at a level four.
01:23:08It has over two points in additional grade of execution.
01:23:12That's a nine point lift.
01:23:16And I will say she did very well to stay focused when her hair was falling out.
01:23:20Yeah, that's not easy either.
01:23:23Interesting.
01:23:24Kirsten, when you take a look at the PC scores, Deanna and Max PC scores are higher than this teams,
01:23:29which one would normally think, at least from the past, but on this day, they are.
01:23:36You know, the judges looking at composition, presentation, skating skills, and it's difficult
01:23:42to show those things at your best when you do have mistakes, but I don't know.
01:23:50I'll have to watch this program again.
01:23:53The music is beautiful and flowing.
01:23:55It needs to be absolutely perfect to carry that, what the intent of it was.
01:24:00On this day, it wasn't, but maybe in the future, it will be.
01:24:02Let's take a look at the scores for Minerva and Nikita.
01:24:09It's a 129.65.
01:24:11That actually is third in the free program with a total competition score of 207.18.
01:24:19And that'll put them in second place.
01:24:21So, Deanna and Max, take the title.
01:24:24They take the title here at Skate Canada.
01:24:27And what a skate.
01:24:28What a weekend for them to win this competition here in Saskatoon, at home in Canada.
01:24:34And hopefully, it's the start of their campaign for this fantastic Olympic season.
01:24:39I think it was a great selection of music, great work by Laurie Nickel and the team, of course, and the coaches to sort of reinvent themselves or give themselves a different vehicle and a different look and a different feel.
01:24:51And they're fresh and new on this Olympic season.
01:24:53So important as we take a look at the standings in this Paris event.
01:24:57We'll see the replays in just a few moments.
01:24:59Your final thoughts, Kirsten?
01:25:00Well, what a great event, Ted.
01:25:02I feel like I always say that to you when we work together.
01:25:06But I felt like today, I love it so much.
01:25:09And some had fantastic wins starting with the first team of the day.
01:25:14The Brits, Anastasia and Luke, had a wonderful recovery from yesterday.
01:25:19And I thought that for those teams who didn't have as great of a skate, we're still pretty early in the season.
01:25:24And it affords them the opportunity to take a look at what worked, what didn't work, go back to the drawing board and figure out how to improve from here.
01:25:33Here are Ellie Cam and Danny O'Shea.
01:25:36So happy for this team today.
01:25:38Such a difficult off season and difficult practices here, but not today in this free program.
01:25:46It really was best case scenario.
01:25:49And hopefully they can use this for confidence and to help them build and to keep moving forward.
01:25:56And they will hope to earn one of the two spots that the United States has to the Olympic Games in Milano in February.
01:26:07And in second, Minerva Fabian-Hassa and Nikita Volodin from Germany.
01:26:13Not their best today in their first Grand Prix.
01:26:18They're still in second.
01:26:20They still have an opportunity, a very great chance to make the Grand Prix Final.
01:26:24And perhaps this event will give them again something to look at and see what's working, what's not working.
01:26:31How can we best make our bid for Olympic champions?
01:26:35Beautiful lifting elements and a wonderful team.
01:26:45Great pair of technical elements.
01:26:47And our champions, Canadians, Deanna Stilato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps.
01:26:54With two brand new programs choreographed by Laurie Nickel and a new zest, would you say, Ted?
01:27:00Yeah, totally.
01:27:01A new energy, great performance.
01:27:05Every aspect of her presentation, their presentation in this program really brings them up to a new level.
01:27:12And now they will have qualified for the Grand Prix Final with a win here in a second place in week number one.
01:27:19That's right.
01:27:20And now they have several weeks to prepare and to recover a little bit and build themselves back up for the Grand Prix Final where they will get to face the best teams in the world.
01:27:31Well, that is so exciting.
01:27:33And Kirsten, thank you so much for your support and help in covering this event.
01:27:37I know you love it and we love it when you're here as well.
01:27:40That concludes our coverage of the Paris free program.
01:27:42Up next will be the women's free program.
01:27:45Caitlin Osmond, 2018 world champion, will be joining me for that.
01:27:48We hope you enjoyed the coverage so far.
01:27:50Stay with us. We'll be back with the women's free.
