00:00The only thing I really thought about Zurich was the fact that Anthony Bourdain said that he would never come
00:06visit here.
00:07I mean, not that I'm really listening to his advice, but that's all I knew.
00:12You definitely did not listen to his advice.
00:14No, no.
00:35Welcome to Zurich Art Guide.
00:37My name is Lauga Condor.
00:39I'm a local curator and artist myself, and I'm going to show you some of the nicest spots in Zurich.
00:45Let's go.
00:53Hallo.
00:54Hallo.
00:55Hey, guys.
00:56Thank you for inviting us.
00:58Please tell us where we are and what you are doing.
01:01We are here in Zurich at our gallery, Karma International.
01:07We have basically three spaces now here in Zurich, and we're standing in one of them.
01:18Where are the hotspots here in Zurich for art lovers?
01:23There's a huge variety of different kinds of art hotspots, from museums to more artist-run spaces.
01:32And then there's also a rich scene in galleries.
01:38Kunsthaus Zurich, definitely worth to check out, especially with the extension.
01:49You're also representing the top artists in the world, like Jasmine, Gregory.
01:57How do you select your artist?
02:00We just naturally grew.
02:03It's not really strategic.
02:05It's more like what we feel is, like, triggering.
02:19Working with Karma has been amazing.
02:22I really like working with, like, two really strong women.
02:26The vibe that Karma has, I think, fits very perfectly with my work, because their whole entire program is kind
02:33of like this disturbance of the whole art scene, which is pretty much what my work is about.
02:38That's why I feel like we're such a great match.
02:53Proto Zones is an exhibition format we came up with.
02:58Proto is like prototype, so it's like a tryout or a version.
03:03The zone is, yeah, it's really this thing of its own space.
03:08And it also refers to protozoae, which is an organism.
03:12It's a single-cell organism.
03:13This is how we want the protozoans to feel like, that they're a space that is alive.
03:19I would say we are some kind of a hybrid or in-between space.
03:23There is this DIY and experimental vibe to it, but then at the same time we have funding, so we
03:30have the privilege to really work also in a larger scale.
03:33The first two, three days of an exhibition is rather really intense.
03:38There are workshops, there are sleepover sessions, DJ sets, the people, the artists themselves are here, which is not normal
03:44for visual arts.
03:45We really wanted to create this different format where really people can dive into and stay.
03:57I mean, Shethal is a bit located in the outskirts of Zurich.
04:00Yeah, like we are dependent on if people want to make the way out here.
04:05But if they do so, they have a wonderful surrounding here to be at the lake.
04:10They can go and have food, they can have like, really like a variety of cultural events.
04:20Last summer especially, I swam every day.
04:25During Corona, it was just like such a calming experience to go to the lake or the Lima and act
04:32like I'm on vacation.
04:35There's a lot of culture, you have nature in the middle of the city and then you also have these
04:40unique little historic restaurants like Corona Halle.
04:53Welcome to Schönsta, we're a small label in the middle of Zurich, from Zurich.
04:59And we specialize in home objects and textiles, ceramics, things like that.
05:04We're a local shop but also sell internationally.
05:07I'm really in love with this tiger.
05:10Yeah, these are like our smallest objects.
05:13There we go, a little more fun, not so serious.
05:16And that was my bachelor project 10 years ago.
05:19Next year it's 10 years.
05:20And it was a combination of art and science and technology.
05:25And I had the opportunity to weave a carpet on a really high-tech weaving machine.
05:29And then I did one piece and the people advised me to do a label but I had no idea.
05:36So it was all a little learning by doing.
05:38But I think now after 10 years in Zurich at least, I think if you need a colorful carpet or
05:44something, you can come to Schönsta.
05:46I think people kind of know.
05:51How has the design scene evolved in Zurich?
05:54Yeah, it was a men's world for a long time.
05:57And the whole aspect of solidarity and support I think is huge.
06:02The new men are very open as well.
06:06And also within my bubble, the women are really strong.
06:09And I think it's a nice thing to finally see in Switzerland.
06:14I think Zurich is a really great place.
06:16It's kind of a little village but it's still cosmopolitan.
06:19So I think we have the best of both worlds.
06:22Of course in certain careers you need to leave.
06:25But it's always nice to come back, I think.
06:31For me it was very exciting to experience this whole new energy in the city.
06:37There's room for sensitivity and a collective sense.
06:41Are you ready for Zurich?
06:49Bye!
