00:00Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the funniest and or entertaining character breaks during
00:07the update segments.
00:08You tired of your dog going dookie on the carpet? Feed him super chunky cheesy bites. It's a big hunks
00:16of cheddar cheese.
00:17Number 20, Sarah Sherman reports on the weather.
00:20I'm here live outside of Rockefeller Center where conditions are very, very cold.
00:26For Weekend Update, I'm Sarah Sherman. Now back to you, Colin.
00:30Not every Weekend Update segment happens exclusively in the studio.
00:34Sarah Sherman went outside to check on the weather, giving Colin Jost and the audience a report they'd never forget.
00:41She didn't turn off her insult comedy, even with the colder temperatures.
00:45When Sherman showed off her dress, she mentioned the lack of a reaction.
00:52Heard not one woo in the audience.
01:01This ad-lib came with major laughs from Jost. It's really funny to watch the two go back and forth,
01:08with this additional moment adding to their chemistry.
01:10The update anchor loses it while the other cast member stays loose under pressure.
01:15You said, uh, you wanted my nips harder than I was during Cardi B's first song.
01:23I did not say that.
01:26Number 19, two Applebee's barflies Darlene and Duke.
01:30Hey! How you doing, Taylor?
01:33Hey!
01:35Hey!
01:36Hey, it's 9 a.m. somewhere!
01:39Cheers!
01:42Celebrating the eccentric details of chain restaurants, Darlene and Duke come ready to discuss their favorite place in the world.
01:49Their love for places like Applebee's is both hilarious and startling.
01:53As they go on, their attention to detail and devotion to a mediocre restaurant speaks volumes.
01:58Where else are they gonna get barbecue sauce on the rim of a plastic cocktail glass?
02:04I want my fries wet, I want my lava cake dry, I want my salad sweet, I want my chicken
02:09wings sweet, and I want my Crasberry Mojito salty with a curly fry straw.
02:14Once other places like Fuddruckers get referenced, all bets are off when Bowen Yang tries to do some wordplay.
02:20Have your birthday at Fuddruckers and you joke about the name.
02:24You know, I thought it was a slur, like, look at that Fuddrucker over there, what the Fuddrucker's wrong with
02:29him?
02:30Yang and Michael Che both laugh as Sarah Sherman reaches for a helpful sip of her drink.
02:35The trio snap back into the script, but not before pausing for some notable breaks.
02:40Playing with a wild script, the cast make it through the segment despite a goofy setback.
02:45Uh-oh! Oh, I hear a boom coming!
02:48Oh!
02:49Boom!
02:52If you're eager for more Weekend Update characters, head over to Ms. Mojo's 24-7 live stream for more Saturday

03:06Applebee's!
03:07Stay!
03:09Darlene Duke and Vincent Boone, everybody!
03:13Number 18, Hollywood Minute with David Spade's Puppet.
03:16When he returned to host SNL, David Spade brought back his Weekend Update feature, Hollywood Minute.
03:22This version of the segment included a puppet that the actor could speak through.
03:26It's just, uh, I haven't done it in a while, and it's not really my thing anymore.
03:31I can't make fun of other celebrities.
03:34But he can.
03:38Hoping to pawn off the blame on his little friend, Spade went after a number of celebrities.
03:43His attempts to speak in a different voice only went so far until he flubbed a line.
03:48Hi, I'm John...
03:50Wait, hi!
03:51I'm...
03:57Switching back and forth between the puppet's perspective and his own,
04:01the performer's quick to recover after a brief setback.
04:04Considering how quick this former sketch player is,
04:07he's equally skilled at correcting himself after a mistake.
04:11You got that one, buddy?
04:13Is that joke still under construction?
04:16Should I put a hard hat on?
04:17Throw down some flares?
04:19Number 17.
04:20Charles Barkley and Shaquille O'Neal.
04:37When you see these real athletes on TV, you want them to talk basketball and mess with each other.
04:43The SNL version of Charles Barkley and Shaquille O'Neal understands this concept especially well.
04:49Jay Farrow and Kenan Thompson show up ready to play, bringing their best impressions along with them.
04:55Oh man, Shaq's brain has gotten smaller because it needs to make more room for food.
05:00He's up to here with potatoes.
05:03Oh, you're just grumpy.
05:05There's also ample chances for two bold impressionists to crack each other up.
05:10Once Farrow's take on Shaq becomes nonverbal, Thompson starts to break.
05:14It's ghosts.
05:16Where?
05:16Where?
05:16Where ghost tracks?
05:17What is it?
05:19The point is...
05:21No, there's no ghost over here.
05:24There's a point here.
05:28They're both able to find the silliest parts of their subjects while holding on for dear life.
05:33Luckily for the audience, these performers can channel the controlled chaos of a real Inside the NBA episode.
05:40I'll show you right away.
05:41Yeah, I know you see it.
05:43Of course you do.
05:44Your eyes are trying to French kiss each other.
05:49Number 16, Amy's Goodbye.
05:52After several fantastic years on the series, Amy Poehler finally decided to leave SNL.
05:57I did just want to take a moment to thank everybody.
06:02This is my last show, and it has been an amazing experience to be here.
06:06Her Time on Weekend update came to a close with a moving goodbye that went sideways.
06:11Rather than going sentimental, the segment had a comedic shift thanks to Fred Armisen.
06:16The latter performer butted in as Governor David Patterson, shuffling in front of the camera and playing confused.
06:23Governor Patterson.
06:24You're in the shot.
06:24You're in the shot.
06:25You're in our shot.
06:26I'm sorry about that.
06:27No, it's okay.
06:27Don't do that.
06:28It's okay.
06:29Poehler got to spend some of her final update breaking while her co-stars put on a show for her.
06:34It was a touching scene covered in laughs, with some talented stars coming together to honor one of their own.
06:41Anyway, I would like to say thank you to everybody.
06:43I love you, and I will miss all of you so much.
06:47For Wiggo's update, all the same time.
06:50Number 15, Three Guys Who Just Bought a Boat.
06:53Alex Moffat always brought a certain mix of slime and charm to this boat enthusiast.
06:59Along with some subliminal messages, the character included another guest in this recurring segment.
07:14Pete Davidson joined Weekend Update after purchasing a ferry with Colin Jost.
07:18With so many boat owners together at once, there were bound to be some surprises.
07:23Davidson could barely contain his excitement with a front row seat to the madness.
07:27Actually, our boat is 300 feet long.
07:29Ew.
07:30Uh, look, it's the width that counts.
07:33Mine's like a tuna can.
07:40The cast member giggled through some of Moffat's best lines, spicing up this entertaining setup even more.
07:47There's also something lovable about Davidson laughing about his own questionable decisions.
07:51It's like with your penis.
07:53No, Pete.
07:55We're for a boat.
07:56Three guys who just bought a boat, everyone.
07:59Weekend Update.
08:00I'm Colin Jost.
08:00Number 14, Weekend Update on Birth Control.
08:04Hello, Colin.
08:05Thank you for having me on your little midnight shindig.
08:08This kind of hot-button topic deserves the right pundit to discuss the pros and cons.
08:13On SNL, the show decided to bring back the church lady for this segment.
08:17She discusses political news and pop culture, even giving a shout-out to HBO's Westworld.
08:23This leads to a joke that doesn't get such a warm reception.
08:26What's not to like, Colin?
08:28A land of naked cowboy robots fornicating.
08:31They should have called it West Hollywood.
08:34Dana Carvey utters a too-soon comment that feels like the perfect ad-lib, sending Colin Jost into hysterics.
08:41Too soon?
08:43It just seems like everything in the world, you think, is just in such a bad state.
08:47Carvey shows that he's adaptable decades after originating one of his best SNL characters.
08:53With Jost playing a supportive scene partner, the two make their way through this reboot with both scripted and non
08:58-scripted reactions.
09:00What a wonderful world.
09:01Oh, no.
09:02You're not going to sing, are you?
09:03I see skies of blue, red roses too.
09:12Number 13.
09:13David Ortiz's post-retirement plans.
09:16To celebrate this MLB slugger's retirement, Kenan Thompson brought back his impression to honor a legend.
09:28The cast member's funny impersonation centers around the man's love of eclectic menu items.
09:42Along with a long list of food, Thompson's character tries out some of his business ideas on Colin Jost.
09:48The result is a few more laughs from the audience and the performers alike.
09:53At one point, both comedians chuckle as the skit becomes even more absurd.
09:58I live in Boston, man.
09:59How I know what's happening in Cleveland?
10:03Hey!
10:07You rarely see a longtime performer like Thompson break like this.
10:11Taking aim at SeaWorld, the SNL star and Jost seem to be enjoying themselves.
10:16B-World.
10:20It's a like SeaWorld, but it's just bees.
10:24Everybody gets stung.
10:27It's a no-good place, but come.
10:29Number 12.
10:30Fallon and De Niro on Update.
10:32Following a controversial review of Meet the Parents, Jimmy Fallon received the ultimate clapback.
10:38Robert De Niro arrived to ask the Weekend Update anchor about his film opinions in person.
10:45Thank you, Tina.
10:46So what did you say about my movie?
10:49Rather than back down, the cast member decides to do his impression of the guest.
10:54Basically, it's you just saying, uh, you're gonna meet me.
10:58You're gonna meet.
10:59You're gonna meet the parents.
11:01You're gonna meet me.
11:01This all builds up to De Niro's rebuttal.
11:04When Tina Fey signs off, the Oscar winner steps in to impersonate Fallon.
11:09The high-pitched, off-kilter voice cuts through the target and makes him laugh.
11:13Well, that's the news.
11:15I'm Tina Fey.
11:16And I'm Jimmy Fallon.
11:18With his intimidating stare and serious tone,
11:21the Goodfellas star proves he's got the comedic chops to throw off an SNL veteran.
11:26Number 11.
11:28Rebecca LaRue, the flirting expert.
11:30Hi, Seth.
11:32Thanks for having me.
11:34Uh, well, hi, Rebecca.
11:35Kristen Wiig knows how to bring a crazy character to life,
11:38embracing the Weekend Update desk as this guest.
11:41Rebecca LaRue is supposed to be an expert,
11:43but all of her methods seem a little bit desperate.
11:46Well, if you're too shy, you just do what you're comfortable with.
11:50Just, like, little small things, like...
11:56Seth Meyers gradually starts to crack up as the presentation goes off the rails.
12:01Wiig eventually executes a wild maneuver,
12:04inching towards her co-star with her legs raised.
12:09Rebecca.
12:10Rebecca.
12:11What are you doing?
12:13What are you doing?
12:14Rebecca.
12:14It's easy to see how this segment could have gotten even stranger with one or two mistakes.
12:20Meyers giggles as his fellow cast member tries not to completely lose it.
12:25It's yet another funny example of an iconic performer in her prime.
12:29I think deep down you're still a good person.
12:33Oh.
12:34Number 10.
12:35Jebediah Atkinson reviews Broadway plays.
12:39As a 19th century critic,
12:41this Taron Killam character doesn't hold back with his opinion.
12:45Jebediah Atkinson is not an easily satisfied viewer, that's for sure.
12:50Les Miserables.
12:51I dreamed a dream too, because I fell asleep in the first act.
12:57Aladdin.
12:58Here's my three wishes.
13:00Make it stop.
13:03But between outlandish lines, even the best make mistakes.
13:07What matters, though, is the recovery.
13:09And Killam is fantastic with his improvisation.
13:13Did you like any of this year's nominees?
13:15I haven't liked any Tommy.
13:16What?
13:18I haven't liked any Tony nomination ever.
13:22You're getting me.
13:24I got big beef with Tommy.
13:27His delivery is impressive, especially when he moves the skit into edgier territory.
13:33It's around the time he sets up the Abraham Lincoln joke that the comedian finally breaks.
13:38The Atkinson role is so ridiculous, and yet Killam powers through like a champ.
13:46Prepare yourselves.
13:48It may not have gone over that well in the orchestra, but it killed in the balcony.
13:58It's not every day that you question someone's sanity during an SNL sketch.
14:03During this skit, both performers try to maintain their composure as they discuss President Trump's
14:09COVID-19 diagnosis.
14:23Host Colin Jost is the first to crumble under the absurdity of the premise as McKinnon's silly character
14:29lives and dies with one running joke that falls apart in hilarious fashion.
14:34It isn't long before she completely falls apart,
14:37going as far as to step out of the character for a little bit and address the audience.
14:41Are you okay?
14:48I'm obviously not.
14:53Still, the memorable segment carries on,
14:56even though both comedians are close to falling out of their chairs.
14:59I have a lot of wigs and mustaches at my disposal,
15:04and it's a nice way to escape.
15:06You know, it's refreshing to play a character who, um, who knows this.
15:11Okay.
15:13Number eight, Chris Farley as Bennett Brower.
15:16Even with a lesser-known Weekend Update sketch,
15:19Chris Farley still provides non-stop energy for this performance.
15:23I don't look comfortable on camera.
15:27I'm not savvy.
15:29I don't understand what's going on in the news.
15:34His correspondent, Bennett Brower, loves air quotes and later prepares to fly on ropes.
15:40The choreography doesn't quite go to plan, prompting some improvisation from Farley.
15:46It's a chaotic moment that makes you remember that the show is always live.
15:49I'm flying!
15:51I'm flying!
15:52I'm flying!
15:54Holy shnikes!
15:56Look at Kevin!
15:58You're almost flying!
15:58But I'm doing something!
16:00Please!
16:01By the time Brower takes flight, the act comes to a thrilling conclusion as the lead actor recovers from the
16:07gaffe.
16:08Post-Kevin Nealon, on the other hand, seems to be trying to make it through the scene.
16:24Number 7, Gumby Returns.
16:27Bringing back one of his beloved characters, Eddie Murphy eases right into this Weekend Update segment.
16:33What are you doing here?
16:35What am I doing here?
16:36The question, Michael Che, is how the hell are you going to put on a show and not have me
16:41in the show until now?
16:43Gumby interrupts the show and demands attention from his co-stars, hurling insults at everyone and speaking the way Gumby
16:50does.
16:51Admittedly, Murphy does a stand-up job at staying in character, but we do catch little slip-ups here and
16:57there.
16:58All right, Gumby, Gumby, just calm down.
17:00Don't tell me to calm down, trailer boy.
17:04The two Update hosts, however, are pretty much doubled over in laughter for the majority of the scene.
17:11Long-time fans of the show are always happy to see an SNL veteran return with the same youthful energy.
17:16And especially when that veteran happens to be Eddie Murphy.
17:20I do what I want to do.
17:22I am Gumby, damn it.
17:24I am Gumby.
17:25And I want to smoke a cigar, I smoke a cigar.
17:28So where's your...
17:29I smoke a cigar.
17:32Number six, Janine Pirro on the Mexico-United States border.
17:36In a lovably exaggerated performance, Cecily Strong completely lets loose on Weekend Update.
17:42But I did take some time off recently.
17:45I went down to the most luxurious place on earth, Mar-a-Lago.
17:51Her take on Janine Pirro involves lots of alcohol flying at a particular target, and he's absolutely gone from the
17:58first hit.
17:59The version of Pirro almost feels designed to generate laughs from Colin Jost.
18:04I'm assuming you're not very happy with the job that President Biden is doing?
18:07He's a disaster!
18:09Have you seen the border?
18:11If Joe Biden had his wife, we'd let everyone in.
18:14As one of the performer's finest roles, the character allows Strong to completely throw out the rulebook.
18:20She even finds time to act out a musical finale with an extra couple of glasses thrown blindly at Jost.
18:27And with expert timing, by the way.
18:39Number 5.
18:41The Iceberg on the Sinking of the Titanic
18:43Finally telling his side of the story, this chilly character claps back at his critics.
18:48The Iceberg reveals himself to be a hysterical part, with an amusing backstory and a whole musical career.
18:55It's called music.
18:57Your album is called music?
18:59Yeah, it's called music.
19:01Wow.
19:04Cool, man.
19:06It's really cool.
19:07It might be one of the more absurd details in an already outrageous skit.
19:11Bowen Yang is absolutely fantastic with his delivery, and weirdly makes this feel like the iceberg has a point,
19:18all while combating the urge to laugh like a true professional.
19:22Oh my god.
19:23Okay, wow.
19:24Okay, fine.
19:25You want to do this?
19:26Let's do this.
19:27First of all, you came to where I live, and you hit me.
19:32We don't think we'd be able to do the same wearing a giant ice hat.
19:36Ending the segment with a musical performance,
19:38the comedian manages to recover skillfully,
19:40and deliver an entertaining song, all in the same appearance.
19:44Kiss me, let's go eat some dinner.
19:46Wine me, dine me.
19:47I had an early lunch, but I'm hungry for you, love-a-boy.
19:52The Iceberg from Titanic, everyone.
19:54That's not my name.
19:55That's not her name.
19:56Number four.
19:57Field correspondent Sarah Sherman gives an SNL studio tour.
20:01Among the most unique talents in recent SNL history, Sarah Sherman brings her own spin to this appearance.
20:08Her antagonistic relationship with Colin Jost prompts the correspondent to enter his dressing room.
20:14And this one just says,
20:16Reminder dinner tonight with Giuliani?
20:23Sarah, I did not write those.
20:25Showing off a collage of her face,
20:27Sherman accidentally drops a picture that she planted,
20:30and has to forego what would have likely been a great part of the bit.
20:33Oh, really?
20:35What's all this then?
20:44Still, not all is lost because Jost is in stitches back at his desk.
20:49The actress unleashes her improvisational skills,
20:52and keeps moving with the skit despite the mistake.
20:55Oh my god, and what do we have here, folks?
20:58It's Colin's famous intern kid!
21:02Uh-oh!
21:03Looks like somebody messed up a Starbucks order.
21:06Her chemistry with the host also makes the moment that much better.
21:10With the loose energy of this segment,
21:12it's almost impossible not to laugh along with everyone else.
21:15Number 3.
21:16Smokery Farms
21:18For this sketch, two farmers share their questionable business model with the world.
21:22Once they bring out a basket of their products,
21:25it's immediately clear that this is somewhat unexpected.
21:28Look at that gorgeous little stinking basket.
21:32Now I'll tell you a lot of me.
21:37And the scent is strong.
21:41Staring down raw meat, both Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant visibly react to the foul smell.
21:47They each carry on with the segment through their laughter.
21:50Oh!
21:52Yum!
21:53I'm getting hungry!
21:55Now you are gonna love our six-ounce filet mignon, okay?
22:00With even co-host Colin Jost giggling off-screen,
22:04this appearance almost derailed at several points before reaching the end.
22:08After the outcome of this skit,
22:10it's safe to assume that the show won't be using raw animal parts again.
22:14You like meat, Colin?
22:16Colin?
22:17You a big meat boy, Colin?
22:20I'm not closer, no.
22:23Number two.
22:24Garth and Kat sing Christmas songs, dress rehearsal.
22:28Always bringing happiness to Weekend Update,
22:30this chaotic duo never quite seems prepared.
22:33By their second improvised Christmas tune,
22:36Fred Armisen and Kristen Wiig are dying laughing.
22:39There was a two-devil reindeer swirling up and down on a mountain.
22:45Oh!
22:50I forgot, boy!
22:52It's kind of incredible to get as far as they do,
22:55honestly, especially when the lyrics become more and more absurd.
22:59Armisen and Wiig find a way to break character again
23:02before Seth Meyers tries to join them.
23:04It might just be their most unhinged appearance,
23:07beating out other holiday songs about Halloween and Mother's Day.
23:11But there's no time for the night, Mother's Day.
23:15You know what I mean?
23:16Because I got a good feeling by everything they say.
23:20But no one's gonna tell you the difference.
23:23Wait, that's the title?
23:26The unrehearsed quality of the recurring bit
23:28provokes even more chuckles from the performers and audience alike.
23:32But when the postman...
23:35When the postman made the stamp on every...
23:41From Santa!

23:55from the writer of the most popular girls in school and us, WatchMojo.
23:59Boom.
23:59I can make an apology video.
24:01Oh, you so would.

24:08Number 1.
24:09Stefan on Halloween's Hottest Tips
24:11How can you not love Stefan?
24:14He's one of Bill Hader's most iconic characters from SNL.
24:18And the sketches almost always make the actor laugh.
24:21New York's hottest Halloween party is...
24:34For this Halloween segment, the performer fights laughter
24:38as he describes a number of spooky destinations.
24:41He then completely breaks as he talks about one uniquely named club patron.
24:46Well, they have a Jewish Dracula.
24:48Oh.
24:49What's his name?
24:50Sidney Applebaum.
24:55Considering that writer John Mulaney frequently changed the script on him,
24:59Hader likely lost it because of a clever rewrite.
25:02Still, the comedian always brings his A-game for these skits,
25:06working through any mistakes and often embracing the urge to let loose.
25:10Shall we say multiple hot dogs in his mouth at one time?
