Far-right groups and police clash in Madrid during deadly train crash protests

Far-right groups clashed with Spanish police in Madrid on Wednesday during a protest demanding the government's resignation following a high-speed train crash that killed at least 68 people. Around 500 demonstrators gathered outside the Transport Ministry, with some throwing bottles and flares at police.

Officers responded by using tear gas as they moved to clear protesters from the roadway. Authorities reported no injuries or detentions.

The collision occurred at about 9 a.m. (0800 GMT) Wednesday morning, when a Spanish high-speed express slammed into a stationary train. The disaster, the deadliest train accident in Europe since a 2013 derailment in Spain's Santiago de Compostela in which 80 people died, follows another fatal accident in January involving high-speed trains operated by the same companies on the same line, in which 46 people died.
