Matt Parrino explains why he's thinking a lot about Jim Leonhard headed into this weekend when the Bills come back off the bye week searching for improvement on the defensive side of the ball.

00:00But I think this week, to me, is really about Jim Leonard in a lot of ways.
00:05He's come under more fire in the last two weeks than I would have anticipated,
00:12given where the Bills are at with their schedule.
00:15I think fans had high expectations for him.
00:19I mean, he's probably, if you're looking at all of the offseason coordinator hires in the NFL,
00:24he's probably at the top of the list in terms of expectations set at the start of training camp.
00:30Declan Doyle, to a degree, but when Lamar Jackson's been on the field, he's been really, really electric.
00:36That offense has been really good, mostly in the first half, but still really good, and the numbers bear that
00:42out.
00:42So I think, to me, Jim Leonard took ownership of this.
00:47When he spoke before the bye, he said, we're going to go back and look at everything,
00:51and if I'm 75% of the problem, you know, I'm going to look in the mirror and put a
00:57lot of this on myself.
00:58And how do I put these guys in a better position?
01:00You know, Poyer, one of the things he was talking about yesterday on the show,
01:04was that you can, even if you don't have an understanding of their scheme
01:09and what they're doing behind closed doors,
01:12you can see just the unsettled nature of the back seven at the snap a lot of times on tape.
01:19And you're almost not even able to be competitive if you're not, A, like, understanding your assignment
01:29once the ball is snapped, and B, in a position to be ready to play the game.
01:34And he mentioned the Dorian Williams interception.
01:37He's like, if you go back and watch that, you'll see that every single one of the back seven
01:42was cleats in the ground, ready to go.
01:46So all communication was done prior to that play,
01:49and they were able to just go out there and play free.
01:52So I think it's really going to be about how does Jim Leonard get this back seven
01:57to a place where the communication is streamlined
02:00and maybe even taking a little bit off of their plate
02:04to allow them to just go out there.
02:07And even if sometimes there might be a lapse in communication,
02:10you're ready when the ball is in play.
