00:00Next question, question question.
00:03Hi there, Kate McKenna from CBC News.
00:05This question is for the Prime Minister.
00:07What expectations can you give Canadians about when trade talks with the U.S. might resume?
00:12Could it happen before the new January 1st additional auto tariff deadline?
00:18And what's the fiscal sustainability of continuing to bail out industry?
00:24Let me start with the second part of that question.
00:27We have the strongest fiscal position in the G7.
00:31We have arguably the strongest fiscal position of any major, certainly of any major economy member of the OECD.
00:38That will be absolutely clear on November 5th when we release the budget.
00:42And why do we have the strongest fiscal position in the G7?
00:46It's been work over previous years.
00:48It's hard work of Canadians and the credit goes to the Canadian people
00:52and the fact that Canadian people expect that of their governments.
00:55But you will see tough decisions that this government has taken.
00:59Last year's budget, this upcoming budget, I won't preview the budget.
01:03But just keep in mind that the growth of program spending was running at 8% a year for almost
01:09a decade.
01:09We brought it down to 2%.
01:11We're very clear about how we use our scarce fiscal taxpayer dollars.
01:16That's what they are, taxpayer dollars.
01:18And that is a focus on affordability and growing this economy.
01:23Capital investment is going to grow this economy.
01:25What you've seen today is the province of Ontario is also disciplined.
01:29We've got the ministers of finance standing right here, also disciplined.
01:33But a focus on where they're going to use their resources, where we're going to use our resources.
01:39It's in those industries where the businesses are going to invest for the future, preserve jobs, but also grow jobs
01:47for the future.
01:48And that's the discipline.
01:49The first part of your question was around when we'll – look, I spoke to President Trump this morning for
01:58quite some time.
02:00As I said in my remarks, we're ready to sit down and negotiate when the U.S. is, but a
02:07deal that's in the interests of Canadians.
02:09And you see very much in what we're talking about today, some of the most important sectors that would have
02:15to be part of that deal.
02:18Follow-up question?
02:19I will address my second question to the Prime Minister as well.
02:23What did you and the President discuss this morning?
02:27We discussed a wide range of things, a wide range of issues, the situation in Iran.
02:36We talked a few days ago about Ukraine and those aspects there.
02:43We talked about other aspects in the Middle East.
02:47And we did address some of the issues around trade.
02:54First of all, in French, I want to emphasize that I like all Canadians and all Canadians.
03:02Yes, especially the Québécois and Québécoises, but all Canadians at the same time.
03:08So, in terms of the conversation with President Trump about the wars in the Middle East, the wars in Ukraine
03:21and the Canada-American relations.
03:26Next question.
03:27Next question.
03:28Hello, Julianne Lapointe of Radio-Canada.
03:30Mr. Carney, I would like to hear you in the issue of the CELCO.
03:33You talked about it in English.
03:34Do you think the PDG is good faith?
03:37And do you think you have the legal foundations necessary to invoke the Section 40 of the Canadian Law on
03:48Investments?
03:48In general, would it be possible to follow them?
03:53And I would like to hear Mr. Ford, too, if you can tell us in English, of course, unless you
03:58want to try in French.
03:59But if you think the federal government should sue, there should be consequences on the CELCO file.
04:10On verra.
04:52Soyons clairs.
04:54Pardon?
04:55Vous allez les poursuivre ou vous allez…
04:57Bien sûr.
04:58Oui.
05:01Bien sûr.
05:01Bien sûr.
05:01Bien sûr.
05:02As I mentioned before, I support the actions that the Prime Minister and the Minister are taking.
05:07We support them 1,000%.
05:08We both agree that our number one priority are the hardworking women and men that work in the steel sector.
05:15And we'll do whatever it takes to protect their jobs and grow opportunities within the steel sector.
