A major security scare hit Tamil Nadu after 17 inmates staged a jailbreak at a prison in Theni. The prisoners feigned illness, overpowered the guards when they entered the cell, and snatched their keys before escaping. While five inmates have been recaptured, 12 remain absconding. Multiple search teams have launched an extensive manhunt across neighbouring areas and border checkpoints. Following the breach, nine prison staffers have been suspended. The incident has raised serious questions over prison administration, with reports highlighting overcrowding, as the facility housed 334 inmates against a capacity of 200, alongside questions regarding protocol adherence during security emergencies.

00:12Remember, these are criminals out and about, not just in Therese, where the prison is,
00:16but also possibly may have crossed the state as well.
00:20We're putting out, of course, an AI illustration on your screens as well
00:24to help you understand what exactly happened.
00:25And the details that we have right now is about how they feigned illness and then managed to run.
00:33The details that are coming in right now is about how 17 inmates managed to attack the guards and then
00:43they left.
00:45Teams have been now sent out to ensure that, because time is of essence,
00:51that they will have to nab the absconding inmates.

01:13Anaga, you've been updating us since morning over this.
01:16What is the latest?
01:17It's at least some relief that five have been caught, but I'm thinking about 12 others.
01:23Yeah, that's right, Pooja.
01:25In fact, 12 others are still yet to be captured.
01:27Five prisoners at the moment have been recaptured.
01:30What they're learning from the police is that when their exit was challenged,
01:34they sort of overpowered the guards there and subsequently have snatched their keys.
01:39And what's surprising, Pooja, is that the capacity of this prison is about 200 inmates,
01:44but the population in that prison was about 334.
01:49In fact, what's even more shocking is that the Tamil Nadu Prison Rules 2024
01:53permit cops to sort of use firearms in case of prison break.
01:58But why was this not a suitable condition to exercise this rule?
02:02So a lot really unanswered questions, Pooja, about this heinous crime that has happened
02:08and they are docenty in which this whole crime has taken place.
02:11But at the moment, five prisoners have been recaptured and 12 more are still on the run.
02:17And the Tamil Nadu police say that they are going to be capturing them as soon as they can,
02:21because a massive manhunt has been launched to recapture the prisoners.
02:25Absolutely, unprecedented.
02:27And remember, it's a moment of security scare as well for the neighbourhood.
02:3212 are still absconding.
02:34Now what we have done is, our India Today team decided to then prepare an AI illustration video
02:40to help you understand what exactly was the nature of security
02:45to help you understand how they feigned illness.
