00:00Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva wins an unprecedented fourth term defeating Senator
00:06Flavio Bolsonaro. This despite challenges from corruption scandals and rising prices.
00:11Lula is an icon of the global left and the most dominant force in Brazilian politics this century.
00:17He defeats Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro. The senator had finished
00:23first in the election's first round and hoped to revive his father's far-right movement.
00:27Lula's re-election looked like a long shot as voters soured on him and his workers party
00:32after years of corruption scandals and rising prices. Sweeping changes in Brazilian society
00:37also left Lula looking out of touch with an increasingly app-based economy and its growing
00:42ranks of informal workers. He was jailed from 2018 to 2019 on corruption charges that were later
00:48overturned. That paved the way for Lula to beat Jair in the 2022 election.
